Ezra 4
1 NOW when the adversaries of Judah and Benjamin heard that the children of the captivity builded the temple unto the Lord God of Israel;
Cuando los enemigos de Judá y Benjamín supieron que los hijos de la cautividad edificaban un Templo para Yahvé, el Dios de Israel,
2 Then they came to Zerubbabel, and to the chief of the fathers, and said unto them, Let us build with you: for we seek your God, as ye do; and we do sacrifice unto him since the days of Esar-haddon king of Assur, which brought us up hither.
vinieron a Zorobabel y a los jefes de las casas paternas, y les dijeron: “Permitid que os ayudemos; pues nosotros buscamos a vuestro Dios lo mismo que vosotros, y a Él le ofrecemos sacrificios desde los días de Asarhaddón, rey de Asiria, que nos ha trasladado a este lugar.”
3 But Zerubbabel, and Jeshua, and the rest of the chief of the fathers of Israel, said unto them, Ye have nothing to do with us to build an house unto our God; but we ourselves together will build unto the Lord God of Israel, as king Cyrus the king of Persia hath commanded us.
Zorobabel, Jesúa y los demás jefes de las casas paternas de Israel les respondieron: “Nada nos sea común con vosotros en la edificación de una Casa para nuestro Dios; antes bien nosotros solos la edificaremos para Yahvé, el Dios de Israel; como nos lo ha mandado el rey Ciro, soberano de Persia.”
4 Then the people of the land weakened the hands of the people of Judah, and troubled them in building,
Así la gente del país debilitaba las manos del pueblo de Judá y estorbaba la construcción.
5 And hired counsellers against them, to frustrate their purpose, all the days of Cyrus king of Persia, even until the reign of Darius king of Persia.
Sobornaron también contra ellos a algunos magistrados para frustrarles su propósito durante toda la vida de Ciro, rey de Persia, hasta el reinado de Darío, rey de Persia.
6 And in the reign of Ahasuerus, in the beginning of his reign, wrote they unto him an accusation against the inhabitants of Judah and Jerusalem.
En el reinado de Asuero, al principio de su reinado, escribieron una carta de acusación contra los habitantes de Judá y Jerusalén;
7 And in the days of Artaxerxes wrote Bishlam, Mithredath, Tabeel, and the rest of their companions, unto Artaxerxes king of Persia; and the writing of the letter was written in the Syrian tongue, and interpreted in the Syrian tongue.
y en los días de Artajerjes, Bislam, Mitridates, Tabeel y el resto de sus compañeros escribieron a Artajerjes, rey de Persia, una carta escrita en letra aramea y traducida a la lengua aramea.
8 Rehum the chancellor and Shimshai the scribe wrote a letter against Jerusalem to Artaxerxes the king in this sort:
Rehum, gobernador, y Simsai, secretario, escribieron en lo tocante a Jerusalén la siguiente carta al rey Artajerjes:
9 Then wrote Rehum the chancellor, and Shimshai the scribe, and the rest of their companions; the Dinaites, the Apharsathchites, the Tarpelites, the Apharsites, the Archevites, the Babylonians, the Susanchites, the Dehavites, and the Elamites,
“En aquel tiempo Rehum, gobernador; Simsai secretario, y el resto de sus compañeros, los dineos, los afarsateos, los tarpelitas, los afarseos, los arquavitas, los babilonios, los susanitas, los dehaítas, los elamitas,
10 And the rest of the nations whom the great and noble Asnappar brought over, and set in the cities of Samaria, and the rest that are on this side the river, and at such a time.
y los demás pueblos que el grande e ilustre Asnapar transportó y estableció en las ciudades de Samaria y en los otros lugares de la otra parte del Río, etc.”
11 This is the copy of the letter that they sent unto him, even unto Artaxerxes the king; Thy servants the men on this side the river, and at such a time.
He aquí la copia de la carta que le enviaron: “Al rey Artajerjes, tus siervos, las gentes de la otra parte del Río, etc.
12 Be it known unto the king, that the Jews which came up from thee to us are come unto Jerusalem, building the rebellious and the bad city, and have set up the walls thereof, and joined the foundations.
Sepa el rey que los judíos que vinieron de ti hacia nosotros, han venido a Jerusalén, y están edificando la ciudad rebelde y mala, reconstruyendo las murallas y restaurando los cimientos.
13 Be it known now unto the king, that, if this city be builded, and the walls set up again, then will they not pay toll, tribute, and custom, and so thou shalt endamage the revenue of the kings.
Sepa el rey, que si esta ciudad se reedifica y se reparan sus murallas, no pagarán ni impuesto, ni tributo, ni derechos de tránsito y al fin perjudicará esto a los reyes.
14 Now because we have maintenance from the king’s palace, and it was not meet for us to see the king’s dishonour, therefore have we sent and certified the king;
Por eso nosotros, en atención a que comemos la sal del palacio, y que no conviene que presenciemos la deshonra del rey, enviamos al rey esta información:
15 That search may be made in the book of the records of thy fathers: so shalt thou find in the book of the records, and know that this city is a rebellious city, and hurtful unto kings and provinces, and that they have moved sedition within the same of old time: for which cause was this city destroyed.
Que se averigüe en el libro de los anales de tus padres; y en el libro de los anales de tus padres hallarás y conocerás que esta ciudad es una ciudad rebelde, que causa daño a los reyes y a las provincias; y que ya desde antiguo se han fraguado rebeliones en medio de ella. Por eso fue destruida esta ciudad.
16 We certify the king that, if this city be builded again, and the walls thereof set up, by this means thou shalt have no portion on this side the river.
Hacemos saber al rey que si esta ciudad se reedifica y se reparan sus murallas, no te quedará más posesión alguna en la otra parte del río.”
17 Then sent the king an answer unto Rehum the chancellor, and to Shimshai the scribe, and to the rest of their companions that dwell in Samaria, and unto the rest beyond the river, Peace, and at such a time.
El rey envió respuesta a Rehum, gobernador; a Simsai, secretario, y a los demás de sus compañeros que habitaban en Samaria, y en los otros lugares de la otra parte del río (diciendo): “Paz, etc.
18 The letter which ye sent unto us hath been plainly read before me.
La carta que nos enviasteis se ha leído delante de mí, palabra por palabra.
19 And I commanded, and search hath been made, and it is found that this city of old time hath made insurrection against kings, and that rebellion and sedition have been made therein.
He dado orden de que se hicieran investigaciones, y se ha hallado que esa ciudad desde antiguo se ha rebelado contra los reyes, y que en ella se han tramado sediciones y revueltas.
20 There have been mighty kings also over Jerusalem, which have ruled over all countries beyond the river; and toll, tribute, and custom, was paid unto them.
Hubo en Jerusalén reyes poderosos, señores de todos los países de la otra parte del río, que recibían impuesto, tributo y derechos de tránsito.
21 Give ye now commandment to cause these men to cease, and that this city be not builded, until another commandment shall be given from me.
Por lo tanto dad orden a esos hombres, que desistan y que esta ciudad no sea reconstruida hasta que yo dé la orden correspondiente.
22 Take heed now that ye fail not to do this: why should damage grow to the hurt of the kings?
Y mirad que no seáis negligentes en esto, no sea que crezca el daño en perjuicio de los reyes.”
23 Now when the copy of king Artaxerxes’ letter was read before Rehum, and Shimshai the scribe, and their companions, they went up in haste to Jerusalem unto the Jews, and made them to cease by force and power.
Entonces, después de la lectura de la copia de la carta del rey Artajerjes delante de Rehum y Simsai, secretario, y sus compañeros, fueron estos a toda prisa a Jerusalén, a los judíos, y los obligaron a suspender los trabajos por la violencia y la fuerza.
24 Then ceased the work of the house of God which is at Jerusalem. So it ceased unto the second year of the reign of Darius king of Persia.
Con esto cesó la obra de la Casa de Dios, que está en Jerusalén; y quedó interrumpida hasta el año segundo del reinado de Darío, rey de Persia.
