1 Timothy 2
1 I EXHORT therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men;
Avant tout, j’exhorte donc à faire des prières, des supplications, des intercessions, des actions de grâces pour tous les hommes,
2 For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty.
pour les rois et pour ceux qui sont constitués en dignité, afin que nous passions une vie paisible et tranquille, en toute piété et honnêteté.
3 For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour;
Cela est bon et agréable aux yeux de Dieu notre Sauveur,
4 Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.
qui veut que tous les hommes soient sauvés et parviennent à la connaissance de la vérité.
5 For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;
Car il y a un seul Dieu; et aussi un seul médiateur entre Dieu et les hommes, le Christ Jésus fait homme,
6 Who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time.
qui s’est donné lui-même en rançon pour tous: c’est là un fait attesté en son temps,
7 Whereunto I am ordained a preacher, and an apostle, (I speak the truth in Christ, and lie not; ) a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and verity.
et c’est pour en témoigner, que j’ai été établi prédicateur et apôtre, — je dis la vérité, je ne mens pas, — docteur des nations dans la foi et la vérité.
8 I will therefore that men pray every where, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and doubting.
Je veux donc que les hommes prient en tout lieu, levant au ciel des mains pures, sans colère ni agitation de pensées;
9 In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array;
de même que les femmes soient en vêtements décents, se parant avec pudeur et simplicité, sans tresses, or, perles où habits somptueux;
10 But (which becometh women professing godliness) with good works.
mais de bonnes œuvres, comme il convient à des femmes qui font profession de servir Dieu.
11 Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection.
Que la femme reçoive l’instruction en silence, avec une entière soumission.
12 But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence.
Je ne permets pas à la femme d’enseigner, ni de prendre autorité sur l’homme; mais elle doit se tenir dans le silence.
13 For Adam was first formed, then Eve.
Car Adam a été formé le premier, Eve ensuite;
14 And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression.
et ce n’est pas Adam qui a été séduit: c’est la femme qui, séduite, est tombée dans la transgression.
15 Notwithstanding she shall be saved in childbearing, if they continue in faith and charity and holiness with sobriety.
Néanmoins, elle sera sauvée en devenant mère, pourvu qu’elle persévère dans la foi, dans la charité et dans la sainteté, unies à la modestie.
