< Matthew 25 >
1 Then shall the kingdom of heaven be likened to ten virgins, which took their lamps, and went forth to meet the bridegroom.
Then the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went to meet the bridegroom.
2 And five of them were wise, and five were foolish.
Five of them were foolish and five were wise.
3 They that were foolish took their lamps, and took no oil with them:
For when the foolish virgins took their lamps, they did not take any oil with them.
4 But the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps.
But the wise virgins took containers of oil along with their lamps.
5 While the bridegroom tarried, they all slumbered and slept.
Now while the bridegroom was delayed, they all got sleepy and slept.
6 And at midnight there was a cry made, Behold, the bridegroom comes; go you out to meet him.
But at midnight there was a cry, 'Look, the bridegroom! Go out and meet him.'
7 Then all those virgins arose, and trimmed their lamps.
Then all those virgins rose up and trimmed their lamps.
8 And the foolish said to the wise, Give us of your oil; for our lamps are gone out.
The foolish said to the wise, 'Give us some of your oil because our lamps are going out.'
9 But the wise answered, saying, Not so; lest there be not enough for us and you: but go you rather to them that sell, and buy for yourselves.
But the wise answered and said, 'Since there will not be enough for us and you, go instead to those who sell and buy some for yourselves.'
10 And while they went to buy, the bridegroom came; and they that were ready went in with him to the marriage: and the door was shut.
While they went away to buy, the bridegroom came, and those who were ready went with him to the marriage feast, and the door was shut.
11 Afterward came also the other virgins, saying, Lord, Lord, open to us.
Afterward the other virgins also came and said, 'Master, master, open for us.'
12 But he answered and said, Truly I say to you, I know you not.
But he answered and said, 'Truly I say to you, I do not know you.'
13 Watch therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour wherein the Son of man comes.
Watch therefore, for you do not know the day or the hour.
14 For the kingdom of heaven is as a man traveling into a far country, who called his own servants, and delivered to them his goods.
For it is like when a man was about to go into another country. He called his own servants and gave over to them his wealth.
15 And to one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one; to every man according to his several ability; and straightway took his journey.
To one of them he gave five talents, to another he gave two, and to yet another he gave one talent. Each one received an amount according to his own ability, and that man went on his journey.
16 Then he that had received the five talents went and traded with the same, and made them other five talents.
The one who received the five talents went at once and invested them and made another five talents.
17 And likewise he that had received two, he also gained other two.
Likewise the one who had received two talents made another two.
18 But he that had received one went and dig in the earth, and hid his lord’s money.
But the servant who had received one talent went away, dug a hole in the ground, and hid his master's money.
19 After a long time the lord of those servants comes, and reckons with them.
Now after a long time the master of those servants came back and settled accounts with them.
20 And so he that had received five talents came and brought other five talents, saying, Lord, you delivered to me five talents: behold, I have gained beside them five talents more.
The servant who had received the five talents came and brought another five talents. He said, 'Master, you gave me five talents. See, I have made five talents more.'
21 His lord said to him, Well done, you good and faithful servant: you have been faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things: enter you into the joy of your lord.
His master said to him, 'Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful over a few things. I will put you in charge over many things. Enter into the joy of your master.'
22 He also that had received two talents came and said, Lord, you delivered to me two talents: behold, I have gained two other talents beside them.
The servant who had received two talents came and said, 'Master, you gave me two talents. See, I have made two more talents.'
23 His lord said to him, Well done, good and faithful servant; you have been faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things: enter you into the joy of your lord.
His master said to him, 'Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful over a few things. I will put you in charge over many things. Enter into the joy of your master.'
24 Then he which had received the one talent came and said, Lord, I knew you that you are an hard man, reaping where you have not sown, and gathering where you have not strewed:
Then the servant who had received one talent came and said, 'Master, I know that you are a strict man. You reap where you did not sow, and you harvest where you did not scatter.
25 And I was afraid, and went and hid your talent in the earth: see, there you have that is yours.
I was afraid, so I went away and hid your talent in the ground. See, you have here what belongs to you.'
26 His lord answered and said to him, You wicked and slothful servant, you knew that I reap where I sowed not, and gather where I have not strewed:
But his master answered and said to him, 'You wicked and lazy servant, you knew that I reap where I have not sowed and harvest where I have not scattered.
27 You should therefore to have put my money to the exchangers, and then at my coming I should have received my own with usury.
Therefore you should have given my money to the bankers, and at my coming I would have received back my own with interest.
28 Take therefore the talent from him, and give it to him which has ten talents.
Therefore take away the talent from him and give it to the servant who has ten talents.
29 For to every one that has shall be given, and he shall have abundance: but from him that has not shall be taken away even that which he has.
For to everyone who possesses, more will be given—even more abundantly. But from anyone who does not possess anything, even what he does have will be taken away.
30 And cast you the unprofitable servant into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
Throw the worthless servant into the outer darkness, where there will be weeping and grinding of teeth.'
31 When the Son of man shall come in his glory, and all the holy angels with him, then shall he sit on the throne of his glory:
When the Son of Man comes in his glory and all the angels with him, then he will sit on his glorious throne.
32 And before him shall be gathered all nations: and he shall separate them one from another, as a shepherd divides his sheep from the goats:
Before him will be gathered all the nations, and he will separate the people one from another, as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats.
33 And he shall set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on the left.
He will place the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on his left.
34 Then shall the King say to them on his right hand, Come, you blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world:
Then the King will say to those on his right hand, 'Come, you who have been blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.
35 For I was an hungered, and you gave me meat: I was thirsty, and you gave me drink: I was a stranger, and you took me in:
For I was hungry and you gave me food; I was thirsty and you gave me a drink; I was a stranger and you took me in;
36 Naked, and you clothed me: I was sick, and you visited me: I was in prison, and you came to me.
I was naked and you clothed me; I was sick and you cared for me; I was in prison and you came to me.'
37 Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we you an hungered, and fed you? or thirsty, and gave you drink?
Then the righteous will answer and say, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you? Or thirsty and give you a drink?
38 When saw we you a stranger, and took you in? or naked, and clothed you?
When did we see you a stranger and take you in? Or naked and clothe you?
39 Or when saw we you sick, or in prison, and came to you?
When did we see you sick or in prison and come to you?'
40 And the King shall answer and say to them, Truly I say to you, Inasmuch as you have done it to one of the least of these my brothers, you have done it to me.
Then the King will answer and say to them, 'Truly I say to you, what you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did it for me.'
41 Then shall he say also to them on the left hand, Depart from me, you cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels: (aiōnios )
Then he will say to those on his left hand, 'Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire that has been prepared for the devil and his angels, (aiōnios )
42 For I was an hungered, and you gave me no meat: I was thirsty, and you gave me no drink:
because I was hungry, but you did not give me food; I was thirsty, but you did not give me a drink;
43 I was a stranger, and you took me not in: naked, and you clothed me not: sick, and in prison, and you visited me not.
I was a stranger, but you did not take me in; naked, but you did not clothe me; sick and in prison, but you did not care for me.'
44 Then shall they also answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we you an hungered, or thirsty, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister to you?
Then they will also answer and say, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry, or thirsty, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not serve you?'
45 Then shall he answer them, saying, Truly I say to you, Inasmuch as you did it not to one of the least of these, you did it not to me.
Then he will answer them and say, 'Truly I say to you, what you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.'
46 And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal. (aiōnios )
These will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.” (aiōnios )
