< John 1 >
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
2 The same was in the beginning with God.
The same was in the beginning with God.
3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.
All things were made by Him, and without Him nothing was made, that has been made.
4 In him was life; and the life was the light of men.
In Him was life, and the life was the light of the men.
5 And the light shines in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.
And the light shineth in the darkness, and the darkness comprehended it not.
6 There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.
There was a man having been sent from God, whose name was John;
7 The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe.
The same came for a witness, that he might bear witness concerning the light, in order that all through him might believe.
8 He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light.
He was not the light, but came that he might bear witness concerning the light.
9 That was the true Light, which lights every man that comes into the world.
That was the true light, which lighteth every man, coming into the world.
10 He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not.
He was in the world, and the world was made by Him, and the world knew Him not.
11 He came to his own, and his own received him not.
He came unto His own, and His own received Him not.
12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:
But so many as received Him, to them gave He the right to become the children of God, to those believing on His name:
13 Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.
who were born not of bloods, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.
14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelled among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, ) full of grace and truth.
The Word was made flesh, and tented among us (and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten with the Father), full of grace and truth.
15 John bore witness of him, and cried, saying, This was he of whom I spoke, He that comes after me is preferred before me: for he was before me.
John beareth witness concerning Him, and cried out saying; This is He of whom I spoke, He that cometh after me has been before me:
16 And of his fullness have all we received, and grace for grace.
because He was my Creator. And of His fullness we all received grace upon grace.
17 For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.
Because the law was given by Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.
18 No man has seen God at any time, the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he has declared him.
No one has ever seen God; the only begotten Son, the one being in the bosom of the Father, He hath declared him.
19 And this is the record of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, Who are you?
This is the testimony of John when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem, that they might ask him,
20 And he confessed, and denied not; but confessed, I am not the Christ.
Who art thou? and he confessed and denied not, and confessed that, I am not the Christ.
21 And they asked him, What then? Are you Elias? And he says, I am not. Are you that prophet? And he answered, No.
They asked him, What then? Art thou Elijah? And he says, I am not. Art thou that prophet?
22 Then said they to him, Who are you? that we may give an answer to them that sent us. What say you of yourself?
And he responded, No. Then they said to him, Who art thou? that we may give an answer to those having sent us. What do you say concerning yourself?
23 He said, I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, Make straight the way of the Lord, as said the prophet Isaiah.
I am the voice of one roaring in the wilderness, Make straight the way of the Lord as Isaiah the prophet said.
24 And they which were sent were of the Pharisees.
And those having been sent were of the Pharisees.
25 And they asked him, and said to him, Why baptize you then, if you be not that Christ, nor Elias, neither that prophet?
And they asked him, and said to him, Then why do you baptize, if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor that prophet?
26 John answered them, saying, I baptize with water: but there stands one among you, whom you know not;
John responded to them, saying, I baptize with water: There standeth One in your midst whom you do not know,
27 He it is, who coming after me is preferred before me, whose shoe’s lace I am not worthy to unloose.
the One coming after me, of whom I am not worthy that I may loose the latchet of His sandal.
28 These things were done in Bethabara beyond Jordan, where John was baptizing.
These things took place in Bethany beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing.
29 The next day John sees Jesus coming to him, and says, Behold the Lamb of God, which takes away the sin of the world.
On the following day he sees Jesus coming to him, and says, Behold the Lamb of God, that taketh away the sin of the world.
30 This is he of whom I said, After me comes a man which is preferred before me: for he was before me.
This is He concerning whom I spoke, A man cometh after me who has been before me: because he was my Creator.
31 And I knew him not: but that he should be made manifest to Israel, therefore am I come baptizing with water.
And I did not know Him, but in order that He may be made manifest to Israel, on this account I came baptizing with water.
32 And John bore record, saying, I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it stayed on him.
And John testified saying, I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and remained on Him.
33 And I knew him not: but he that sent me to baptize with water, the same said to me, On whom you shall see the Spirit descending, and remaining on him, the same is he which baptizes with the Holy Ghost.
And I did not know Him, but the One having sent me to baptize with water, He said to me, On whom you may see the Spirit descending and remaining on Him, He is the one baptizing with the Holy Ghost.
34 And I saw, and bore record that this is the Son of God.
And I have seen, and testified that He is the Son of God.
35 Again the next day after John stood, and two of his disciples;
On the following day John again stood, and two of his disciples,
36 And looking on Jesus as he walked, he says, Behold the Lamb of God!
and looking upon Jesus walking about, says, Behold, the Lamb of God.
37 And the two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus.
And the two disciples heard him speaking and followed Jesus.
38 Then Jesus turned, and saw them following, and says to them, What seek you? They said to him, Rabbi, (which is to say, being interpreted, Master, ) where dwell you?
Jesus turning and seeing them following, says to them, What are you seeking? and they said to Him, Doctor, (which is said, being interpreted, Teacher), where dwellest thou?
39 He says to them, Come and see. They came and saw where he dwelled, and stayed with him that day: for it was about the tenth hour.
He says to them; Come and see. Then they came and saw where He dwelleth, and they abode with Him that day: it was about the tenth hour.
40 One of the two which heard John speak, and followed him, was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother.
Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, was one of the two hearing from John, and follows Him;
41 He first finds his own brother Simon, and says to him, We have found the Messias, which is, being interpreted, the Christ.
he first finds his own brother Simon, and says to him, We have found Messiah, which is being interpreted, Christ.
42 And he brought him to Jesus. And when Jesus beheld him, he said, You are Simon the son of Jona: you shall be called Cephas, which is by interpretation, A stone.
He led him to Jesus. Jesus looking upon him said; Thou art Simon the Son of Jonah, thou shalt be called Cephas (which is interpreted, Peter).
43 The day following Jesus would go forth into Galilee, and finds Philip, and says to him, Follow me.
On the following day he wished to depart into Galilee, and he finds Philip. And Jesus says to him; Follow me.
44 Now Philip was of Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter.
Philip was from Bethsaida, of the city of Andrew and Peter.
45 Philip finds Nathanael, and says to him, We have found him, of whom Moses in the law, and the prophets, did write, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.
Philip finds Nathanael and says to him, We have found Him, of whom Moses and the prophets, in the law, did write, Jesus the son of Joseph, who is from Nazareth.
46 And Nathanael says to him, Can there any good thing come out of Nazareth? Philip said to him, Come and see.
Nathanael said to him, Is any good thing able to come out of Nazareth? Philip says to him, Come and see.
47 Jesus saw Nathanael coming to him, and says of him, Behold an Israelite indeed, in whom is no guile!
Jesus saw Nathanael coming to Him, and says concerning him, Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom there is no guile.
48 Nathanael says to him, From where know you me? Jesus answered and said to him, Before that Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.
Nathanael says to Him, Whence do you know me? Jesus responded and said to him, Before Philip called you, I saw you, being under the fig-tree.
49 Nathanael answered and says to him, Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the King of Israel.
Nathanael responded, Rabbi, thou art the Son of God, the King of Israel.
50 Jesus answered and said to him, Because I said to you, I saw you under the fig tree, believe you? you shall see greater things than these.
Jesus responded and said to him, Because I said to thee, that I saw thee under the fig-tree, dost thou believe? thou shalt see greater things than these.
51 And he says to him, Truly, truly, I say to you, Hereafter you shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of man.
And He says to him, Truly, truly, I say unto you, you shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man.
