Genesis 16

1 Now Sarai Abram’s wife bore him no children: and she had an handmaid, an Egyptian, whose name was Hagar.

Et Saraï, femme d'Abram, ne lui donnait point d'enfants; mais elle avait une servante Egyptienne dont le nom était Agar.

2 And Sarai said to Abram, Behold now, the LORD has restrained me from bearing: I pray you, go in to my maid; it may be that I may obtain children by her. And Abram listened to the voice of Sarai.

Et Saraï dit à Abram: Voici, l'Éternel met donc obstacle à ce que j'aie des enfants: approche-toi donc de ma servante, peut-être par elle fonderai-je ma maison. Et Abram prêta l'oreille à la voix de Saraï.

3 And Sarai Abram’s wife took Hagar her maid the Egyptian, after Abram had dwelled ten years in the land of Canaan, and gave her to her husband Abram to be his wife.

Alors Saraï, femme d'Abram, prit l'Egyptienne Agar, sa servante, au bout de dix ans de séjour d'Abram dans le pays de Canaan, et la donna à Abram, son mari, pour femme.

4 And he went in to Hagar, and she conceived: and when she saw that she had conceived, her mistress was despised in her eyes.

Et il s'approcha d'Agar qui devint enceinte, et quand elle se vit enceinte, sa maîtresse fut déconsidérée à ses yeux.

5 And Sarai said to Abram, My wrong be on you: I have given my maid into your bosom; and when she saw that she had conceived, I was despised in her eyes: the LORD judge between me and you.

Et Saraï dit à Abram: L'outrage que je reçois retombe sur toi! J'ai mis ma servante entre tes bras, et comme elle se voit enceinte, je suis déconsidérée à ses yeux: que l'Éternel soit juge entre moi et toi!

6 But Abram said to Sarai, Behold, your maid is in your hand; do to her as it pleases you. And when Sarai dealt hardly with her, she fled from her face.

Et Abram dit à Saraï: Voici, ta servante est en ton pouvoir, traite-la comme tu le trouveras bon. Alors Saraï lui fit des avanies, et Agar s'enfuit loin de sa présence.

7 And the angel of the LORD found her by a fountain of water in the wilderness, by the fountain in the way to Shur.

Et l'Ange de l'Éternel la trouva près de la source d'eau dans le désert, près de la source qui est sur le chemin de Sur.

8 And he said, Hagar, Sarai’s maid, from where came you? and where will you go? And she said, I flee from the face of my mistress Sarai.

Et il dit: Agar, servante de Saraï, d'où viens-tu et où vas-tu? Et elle dit: Loin de la présence de Saraï, ma maîtresse, je fuis.

9 And the angel of the LORD said to her, Return to your mistress, and submit yourself under her hands.

Et l'Ange de l'Éternel lui dit: Retourne chez ta maîtresse et laisse-toi humilier sous sa main.

10 And the angel of the LORD said to her, I will multiply your seed exceedingly, that it shall not be numbered for multitude.

Et l'Ange de l'Éternel lui dit: Je multiplierai ta postérité tellement qu'on ne pourra la compter, tant elle sera nombreuse.

11 And the angel of the LORD said to her, Behold, you are with child and shall bear a son, and shall call his name Ishmael; because the LORD has heard your affliction.

Et l'Ange de l'Éternel lui dit: Voici, tu es enceinte, et tu enfanteras un fils, et tu le nommeras Ismaël, car Dieu a ouï ton affliction.

12 And he will be a wild man; his hand will be against every man, and every man’s hand against him; and he shall dwell in the presence of all his brothers.

Et il sera un onagre en fait d'homme, opposant sa main à tous et ayant contre lui la main de tous, et à l'orient de tous ses frères il habitera.

13 And she called the name of the LORD that spoke to her, You God see me: for she said, Have I also here looked after him that sees me?

Et elle appela l'Éternel qui avait parlé avec elle du nom de: Tu es le Dieu qui voit! Car elle disait: Et ici n'ai-je pas aussi vu après avoir été vue?

14 Why the well was called Beerlahairoi; behold, it is between Kadesh and Bered.

C'est pourquoi l'on a appelé ce puits: Le Puits du Vivant qui me Voit; voici, il est entre Kadès et Bered.

15 And Hagar bore Abram a son: and Abram called his son’s name, which Hagar bore, Ishmael.

Et Agar enfanta un fils à Abram, et Abram appela son fils, que Agar lui avait enfanté, du nom d'Ismaël.

16 And Abram was fourscore and six years old, when Hagar bore Ishmael to Abram.

Or, Abram avait quatre-vingt-six ans, lorsque Agar enfanta Ismaël à Abram.
