< Acts 2 >

1 And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.
When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in the same place.
2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting.
Suddenly there came from heaven a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting.
3 And there appeared to them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat on each of them.
There appeared to them tongues like fire that were distributed, and they sat upon each one of them.
4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
They were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other languages, as the Spirit gave them to speak.
5 And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven.
Now there were Jews who were living in Jerusalem, godly men, from every nation under heaven.
6 Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language.
When this sound was heard, the multitude came together and was confused because everyone heard them speaking in his own language.
7 And they were all amazed and marveled, saying one to another, Behold, are not all these which speak Galilaeans?
They were amazed and marveled; they said, “Really, are not all these who are speaking Galileans?
8 And how hear we every man in our own tongue, wherein we were born?
Why is it that we are hearing them, each in our own language in which we were born?
9 Parthians, and Medes, and Elamites, and the dwellers in Mesopotamia, and in Judaea, and Cappadocia, in Pontus, and Asia,
Parthians and Medes and Elamites, and those who live in Mesopotamia, in Judea and Cappadocia, in Pontus and Asia,
10 Phrygia, and Pamphylia, in Egypt, and in the parts of Libya about Cyrene, and strangers of Rome, Jews and proselytes,
Phrygia and Pamphylia, in Egypt and the parts of Libya toward Cyrene, and visitors from Rome,
11 Cretes and Arabians, we do hear them speak in our tongues the wonderful works of God.
Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabians, we hear them telling in our languages about the mighty works of God.”
12 And they were all amazed, and were in doubt, saying one to another, What means this?
They were all amazed and perplexed; they said to one another, “What does this mean?”
13 Others mocking said, These men are full of new wine.
But others mocked and said, “They are full of new wine.”
14 But Peter, standing up with the eleven, lifted up his voice, and said to them, You men of Judaea, and all you that dwell at Jerusalem, be this known to you, and listen to my words:
But Peter stood with the eleven, raised his voice, and said to them, “Men of Judea and all of you who live at Jerusalem, let this be known to you; pay attention to my words.
15 For these are not drunken, as you suppose, seeing it is but the third hour of the day.
For these people are not drunk as you assume, for it is only the third hour of the day.
16 But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel;
But this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel:
17 And it shall come to pass in the last days, says God, I will pour out of my Spirit on all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams:
'It will be in the last days,' God says, 'I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and your daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, and your old men will dream dreams.
18 And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my Spirit; and they shall prophesy:
Also on my servants and my female servants in those days I will pour out my Spirit, and they will prophesy.
19 And I will show wonders in heaven above, and signs in the earth beneath; blood, and fire, and vapor of smoke:
I will show wonders in the sky above and signs on the earth below, blood, fire, and vapor of smoke.
20 The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and notable day of the Lord come:
The sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood, before the great and remarkable day of the Lord comes.
21 And it shall come to pass, that whoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved.
It will be that everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.'
22 You men of Israel, hear these words; Jesus of Nazareth, a man approved of God among you by miracles and wonders and signs, which God did by him in the middle of you, as you yourselves also know:
Men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of Nazareth, a man accredited to you by God by the mighty deeds, the wonders, and the signs which God did through him in your midst, as you yourselves know.
23 Him, being delivered by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God, you have taken, and by wicked hands have crucified and slain:
This man was handed over by God's predetermined plan and foreknowledge; and you, by the hand of lawless men, put him to death by nailing him to a cross.
24 Whom God has raised up, having loosed the pains of death: because it was not possible that he should be held of it.
But God raised him up, freeing him from the pains of death, because it was impossible for him to be held by it.
25 For David speaks concerning him, I foresaw the Lord always before my face, for he is on my right hand, that I should not be moved:
For David says about him, 'I saw the Lord always before my face, for he is beside my right hand so that I should not be moved.
26 Therefore did my heart rejoice, and my tongue was glad; moreover also my flesh shall rest in hope:
Therefore my heart was glad and my tongue rejoiced. Also, my flesh will live in certain hope.
27 Because you will not leave my soul in hell, neither will you suffer your Holy One to see corruption. (Hadēs g86)
For you will not abandon my soul to Hades, neither will you allow your Holy One to see decay. (Hadēs g86)
28 You have made known to me the ways of life; you shall make me full of joy with your countenance.
You revealed to me the ways of life; you will make me full of gladness with your face.'
29 Men and brothers, let me freely speak to you of the patriarch David, that he is both dead and buried, and his sepulcher is with us to this day.
Brothers, I can speak to you confidently about the patriarch David, he both died and was buried, and his tomb is with us to this day.
30 Therefore being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him, that of the fruit of his loins, according to the flesh, he would raise up Christ to sit on his throne;
Therefore, he was a prophet and knew that God had sworn with an oath to him, that he would set one of the fruit of his body upon his throne.
31 He seeing this before spoke of the resurrection of Christ, that his soul was not left in hell, neither his flesh did see corruption. (Hadēs g86)
He saw what was to happen in the future and spoke about the resurrection of the Christ, 'He was neither abandoned to Hades, nor did his flesh see decay.' (Hadēs g86)
32 This Jesus has God raised up, whereof we all are witnesses.
This Jesus—God raised him up, of which we all are witnesses.
33 Therefore being by the right hand of God exalted, and having received of the Father the promise of the Holy Ghost, he has shed forth this, which you now see and hear.
Therefore having been exalted to the right hand of God and having received the promised Holy Spirit from the Father, he has poured out what you see and hear.
34 For David is not ascended into the heavens: but he says himself, The Lord said to my Lord, Sit you on my right hand,
For David did not ascend to the heaven, but he says, 'The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at my right hand,
35 Until I make your foes your footstool.
until I make your enemies the stool for your feet.”'
36 Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly, that God has made the same Jesus, whom you have crucified, both Lord and Christ.
Therefore, let all the house of Israel certainly know that God has made him both Lord and Christ, this Jesus whom you crucified.”
37 Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said to Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brothers, what shall we do?
Now when they heard this, they were pierced in their hearts, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?”
38 Then Peter said to them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
Then Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized, each of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
39 For the promise is to you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the LORD our God shall call.
For the promise is to you and to your children and to all that are far off, as many people as the Lord our God will call.”
40 And with many other words did he testify and exhort, saying, Save yourselves from this untoward generation.
With many other words he testified and urged them; he said, “Save yourselves from this wicked generation.”
41 Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added to them about three thousand souls.
Then they received his word and were baptized, and there were added in that day about three thousand souls.
42 And they continued steadfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.
They continued in the apostles' teaching and fellowship, in the breaking of bread and in prayers.
43 And fear came on every soul: and many wonders and signs were done by the apostles.
Fear came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were done through the apostles.
44 And all that believed were together, and had all things common;
All who believed were together and had all things in common,
45 And sold their possessions and goods, and parted them to all men, as every man had need.
and they sold their property and possessions and distributed them to all, according to the needs anyone had.
46 And they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart,
So day after day they continued with one purpose in the temple, and they broke bread in homes, and they shared food with glad and humble hearts,
47 Praising God, and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved.
praising God and having favor with all the people, and every day the Lord added to their number those who were being saved.
