1 Kings 12
1 And Rehoboam went to Shechem: for all Israel were come to Shechem to make him king.
Roboam se rendit à Sichem, car tout Israël était venu à Sichem pour le faire roi.
2 And it came to pass, when Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who was yet in Egypt, heard of it, (for he was fled from the presence of king Solomon, and Jeroboam dwelled in Egypt; )
Jéroboam, fils de Nabat, ayant appris ce qui se passait, — il était encore en Égypte où il s’était enfui loin du roi Salomon, et Jéroboam demeurait en Égypte, —
3 That they sent and called him. And Jeroboam and all the congregation of Israel came, and spoke to Rehoboam, saying,
on l’envoya chercher. Alors Jéroboam et toute l’assemblée d’Israël vinrent et parlèrent à Roboam en ces termes:
4 Your father made our yoke grievous: now therefore make you the grievous service of your father, and his heavy yoke which he put on us, lighter, and we will serve you.
« Ton père a rendu notre joug dur; toi maintenant, allège la dure servitude que nous a imposée ton père, et le joug pesant qu’il a mis sur nous; et nous te servirons. »
5 And he said to them, Depart yet for three days, then come again to me. And the people departed.
Il leur dit: « Allez vous-en pour trois jours, et revenez vers moi. » Et le peuple s’en alla.
6 And king Rehoboam consulted with the old men, that stood before Solomon his father while he yet lived, and said, How do you advise that I may answer this people?
Le roi Roboam consulta les vieillards qui s’étaient tenus auprès de Salomon, son père, pendant sa vie, en disant: « Que me conseillez-vous de répondre à ce peuple? »
7 And they spoke to him, saying, If you will be a servant to this people this day, and will serve them, and answer them, and speak good words to them, then they will be your servants for ever.
Ils lui parlèrent en disant: « Si aujourd’hui tu es serviable à ce peuple, si tu leur viens en aide, si tu leur réponds et si tu leur dis des paroles bienveillantes, ils seront pour toujours tes serviteurs. »
8 But he forsook the counsel of the old men, which they had given him, and consulted with the young men that were grown up with him, and which stood before him:
Mais Roboam laissa le conseil que lui donnaient les vieillards, et il consulta les jeunes gens qui avaient grandi avec lui et qui se tenaient devant lui.
9 And he said to them, What counsel give you that we may answer this people, who have spoken to me, saying, Make the yoke which your father did put on us lighter?
Il leur dit: « Que me conseillez-vous de répondre à ce peuple qui me tient ce langage: Allège le joug que nous a imposé ton père? »
10 And the young men that were grown up with him spoke to him, saying, Thus shall you speak to this people that spoke to you, saying, Your father made our yoke heavy, but make you it lighter to us; thus shall you say to them, My little finger shall be thicker than my father’s loins.
Les jeunes gens qui avaient grandi avec lui répondirent en disant: « Tu parleras ainsi à ce peuple qui t’a tenu ce langage: Ton père a rendu notre joug pesant; toi allège-le-nous! Tu leur parleras ainsi: Mon petit doigt est plus gros que les reins de mon père.
11 And now whereas my father did lade you with a heavy yoke, I will add to your yoke: my father has chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.
Eh bien! Mon père vous a chargés d’un joug pesant, et moi je rendrai votre joug plus pesant encore; mon père vous a châtiés avec des fouets, et moi je vous châtierai avec des scorpions. »
12 So Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam the third day, as the king had appointed, saying, Come to me again the third day.
Jéroboam et tout le peuple vinrent auprès de Roboam le troisième jour, selon que le roi avait dit: « Revenez vers moi dans trois jours. »
13 And the king answered the people roughly, and forsook the old men’s counsel that they gave him;
Le roi répondit durement au peuple. Laissant le conseil que les vieillards lui avaient donné,
14 And spoke to them after the counsel of the young men, saying, My father made your yoke heavy, and I will add to your yoke: my father also chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.
il leur parla selon le conseil des jeunes gens, en ces termes: « Mon père a rendu votre joug pesant, et moi je rendrai votre joug plus pesant encore; mon père vous a châtiés avec des fouets, et moi je vous châtierai avec des scorpions. »
15 Why the king listened not to the people; for the cause was from the LORD, that he might perform his saying, which the LORD spoke by Ahijah the Shilonite to Jeroboam the son of Nebat.
Le roi n’écouta donc pas le peuple, car tel était le procédé de Yahweh pour l’accomplissement de la parole que Yahweh avait dite par Ahias de Silo à Jéroboam, fils de Nabat.
16 So when all Israel saw that the king listened not to them, the people answered the king, saying, What portion have we in David? neither have we inheritance in the son of Jesse: to your tents, O Israel: now see to your own house, David. So Israel departed to their tents.
Lorsque tout Israël vit que le roi ne l’écoutait pas, le peuple répondit au roi en ces termes: « Quelle part avons-nous avec David? Nous n’avons pas d’héritage avec le fils d’Isaï! A tes tentes, Israël! Quant à toi, pourvois à ta maison, David! » Et Israël s’en alla dans ses tentes.
17 But as for the children of Israel which dwelled in the cities of Judah, Rehoboam reigned over them.
Ce fut seulement sur les enfants d’Israël qui habitaient les villes de Juda que régna Roboam.
18 Then king Rehoboam sent Adoram, who was over the tribute; and all Israel stoned him with stones, that he died. Therefore king Rehoboam made speed to get him up to his chariot, to flee to Jerusalem.
Alors le roi Roboam envoya Aduram, qui était préposé aux impôts; mais Aduram fut lapidé par tout Israël, et il mourut. Et le roi Roboam se hâta de monter sur un char, pour s’enfuir à Jérusalem.
19 So Israel rebelled against the house of David to this day.
C’est ainsi qu’Israël se détacha de la maison de David jusqu’à ce jour.
20 And it came to pass, when all Israel heard that Jeroboam was come again, that they sent and called him to the congregation, and made him king over all Israel: there was none that followed the house of David, but the tribe of Judah only.
Tout Israël ayant appris que Jéroboam était revenu d’Égypte, ils l’envoyèrent appeler dans l’assemblée, et ils le firent roi sur tout Israël. Il n’y eut personne qui suivit la maison de David, si ce n’est la seule tribu de Juda.
21 And when Rehoboam was come to Jerusalem, he assembled all the house of Judah, with the tribe of Benjamin, an hundred and fourscore thousand chosen men, which were warriors, to fight against the house of Israel, to bring the kingdom again to Rehoboam the son of Solomon.
De retour à Jérusalem, Roboam rassembla toute la maison de Juda et la tribu de Benjamin, cent quatre-vingt mille guerriers d’élite, pour qu’ils combattissent contre la maison d’Israël, afin de ramener le royaume à Roboam, fils de Salomon.
22 But the word of God came to Shemaiah the man of God, saying,
Mais la parole de Dieu fut adressée à Sémaïas, homme de Dieu, en ces termes:
23 Speak to Rehoboam, the son of Solomon, king of Judah, and to all the house of Judah and Benjamin, and to the remnant of the people, saying,
« Parle à Roboam, fils de Salomon, roi de Juda, et à toute la maison de Juda et de Benjamin, et au reste du peuple, en disant:
24 Thus says the LORD, You shall not go up, nor fight against your brothers the children of Israel: return every man to his house; for this thing is from me. They listened therefore to the word of the LORD, and returned to depart, according to the word of the LORD.
Ainsi dit Yahweh: Ne montez pas et ne faites pas la guerre à vos frères, les enfants d’Israël. Retournez chacun dans votre maison, car c’est par moi que cette chose est arrivée. » Ils écoutèrent la parole de Yahweh, et ils s’en retournèrent, se conformant à la parole de Yahweh.
25 Then Jeroboam built Shechem in mount Ephraim, and dwelled therein; and went out from there, and built Penuel.
Jéroboam bâtit Sichem sur la montagne d’Ephraïm, et il y demeura; il en sortit ensuite, et bâtit Phanuel.
26 And Jeroboam said in his heart, Now shall the kingdom return to the house of David:
Et Jéroboam dit dans son cœur: « Maintenant le royaume pourrait bien retourner à la maison de David.
27 If this people go up to do sacrifice in the house of the LORD at Jerusalem, then shall the heart of this people turn again to their lord, even to Rehoboam king of Judah, and they shall kill me, and go again to Rehoboam king of Judah.
Si ce peuple monte pour faire des sacrifices dans la maison de Yahweh, à Jérusalem, le cœur de ce peuple retournera à son seigneur, à Roboam, roi de Juda, ils me tueront et retourneront à Roboam, roi de Juda. »
28 Whereupon the king took counsel, and made two calves of gold, and said to them, It is too much for you to go up to Jerusalem: behold your gods, O Israel, which brought you up out of the land of Egypt.
Après s’être consulté, le roi fit deux veaux d’or, et il dit au peuple: « Assez longtemps vous êtes montés à Jérusalem! Israël, voici ton Dieu, qui t’a fait monter du pays d’Égypte. »
29 And he set the one in Bethel, and the other put he in Dan.
Il plaça l’un de ces veaux à Béthel, et il mit l’autre à Dan.
30 And this thing became a sin: for the people went to worship before the one, even to Dan.
Ce fut là une occasion de péché, car le peuple allait jusqu’à Dan adorer l’un des veaux.
31 And he made an house of high places, and made priests of the lowest of the people, which were not of the sons of Levi.
Jéroboam fit une maison de hauts lieux, et il fit des prêtres pris parmi le peuple, qui n’étaient pas des enfants de Lévi.
32 And Jeroboam ordained a feast in the eighth month, on the fifteenth day of the month, like to the feast that is in Judah, and he offered on the altar. So did he in Bethel, sacrificing to the calves that he had made: and he placed in Bethel the priests of the high places which he had made.
Jéroboam institua une fête au huitième mois, le quinzième jour du mois, à l’imitation de la fête qui se célébrait en Juda, et il offrit des sacrifices sur l’autel. C’est ainsi qu’il fit à Béthel, afin que l’on sacrifiât aux veaux qu’il avait faits. Il établit à Béthel les prêtres des hauts lieux qu’il avait élevés.
33 So he offered on the altar which he had made in Bethel the fifteenth day of the eighth month, even in the month which he had devised of his own heart; and ordained a feast to the children of Israel: and he offered on the altar, and burnt incense.
Il monta sur l’autel qu’il avait fait à Béthel, le quinzième jour du huitième mois, le mois qu’il avait choisi de lui-même. Il institua une fête pour les enfants d’Israël, et il monta sur l’autel pour mettre le feu aux victimes.
