< Psalms 38 >

1 A Psalm of David, to make memorial. O LORD, rebuke me not in Thine anger; neither chasten me in Thy wrath.
Adonai, don’t rebuke me in your wrath, neither chasten me in your hot displeasure.
2 For Thine arrows are gone deep into me, and Thy hand is come down upon me.
For your arrows have pierced me, your hand presses hard on me.
3 There is no soundness in my flesh because of Thine indignation; neither is there any health in my bones because of my sin.
There is no soundness in my flesh because of your indignation, neither is there any health in my bones because of my habitual sin ·missing the mark·.
4 For mine iniquities are gone over my head; as a heavy burden they are too heavy for me.
For my depravities (moral evils) have gone over my head. As a heavy burden, they are too heavy for me.
5 My wounds are noisome, they fester, because of my foolishness.
My wounds are loathsome and corrupt, because of my foolishness.
6 I am bent and bowed down greatly; I go mourning all the day.
I am pained and bowed down greatly. I go mourning all day long.
7 For my loins are filled with burning; and there is no soundness in my flesh.
For my waist is filled with burning. There is no soundness in my flesh.
8 I am benumbed and sore crushed; I groan by reason of the moaning of my heart.
I am faint and severely bruised. I have groaned by reason of the anguish of my heart.
9 Lord, all my desire is before Thee; and my sighing is not hid from Thee.
Lord, all my desire is before you. My groaning is not hidden from you.
10 My heart fluttereth, my strength faileth me; as for the light of mine eyes, it also is gone from me.
My heart throbs. My strength fails me. As for the light of my eyes, it has also left me.
11 My friends and my companions stand aloof from my plague; and my kinsmen stand afar off.
My 'ahav ·affectionate lovers· and my friends stand aloof from my plague. My kinsmen stand far away.
12 They also that seek after my life lay snares for me; and they that seek my hurt speak crafty devices, and utter deceits all the day.
They also who seek after my life lay snares. Those who seek my hurt speak mischievous things, and meditate deceits all day long.
13 But I am as a deaf man, I hear not; and I am as a dumb man that openeth not his mouth.
But I, as a deaf man, don’t sh'ma ·hear obey·. I am as a mute man who does not open his mouth.
14 Yea, I am become as a man that heareth not, and in whose mouth are no arguments.
Yes, I am as a man who does not sh'ma ·hear obey·, in whose mouth are no reproofs.
15 For in Thee, O LORD, do I hope; Thou wilt answer, O Lord my God.
For in you, Adonai, do I hope. You will answer, Lord my God.
16 For I said: 'Lest they rejoice over me; when my foot slippeth, they magnify themselves against me.'
For I said, “Don’t let them gloat over me, or exalt themselves over me when my foot slips.”
17 For I am ready to halt, and my pain is continually before me.
For I am ready to fall. My pain is continually before me.
18 For I do declare mine iniquity; I am full of care because of my sin.
For I will declare my depravity (moral evil). I will be sorry for my habitual sin ·missing the mark·.
19 But mine enemies are strong in health; and they that hate me wrongfully are multiplied.
But my enemies are vigorous and many. Those who hate me without reason are numerous.
20 They also that repay evil for good are adversaries unto me, because I follow the thing that is good.
They who also render evil for good are adversaries to me, because I follow what is good.
21 Forsake me not, O LORD; O my God, be not far from me.
Don’t forsake me, Adonai. My God, don’t be far from me.
22 Make haste to help me, O LORD, my salvation.
Hurry to help me, Lord, my salvation.
