Proverbs 1
1 THE PROVERBS of Solomon the son of David, king of Israel;
Amsal-amsal Salomo bin Daud, raja Israel,
2 To know wisdom and instruction; to comprehend the words of understanding;
untuk mengetahui hikmat dan didikan, untuk mengerti kata-kata yang bermakna,
3 To receive the discipline of wisdom, justice, and right, and equity;
untuk menerima didikan yang menjadikan pandai, serta kebenaran, keadilan dan kejujuran,
4 To give prudence to the simple, to the young man knowledge and discretion;
untuk memberikan kecerdasan kepada orang yang tak berpengalaman, dan pengetahuan serta kebijaksanaan kepada orang muda--
5 That the wise man may hear, and increase in learning, and the man of understanding may attain unto wise counsels;
baiklah orang bijak mendengar dan menambah ilmu dan baiklah orang yang berpengertian memperoleh bahan pertimbangan--
6 To understand a proverb, and a figure; the words of the wise, and their dark sayings.
untuk mengerti amsal dan ibarat, perkataan dan teka-teki orang bijak.
7 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge; but the foolish despise wisdom and discipline.
Takut akan TUHAN adalah permulaan pengetahuan, tetapi orang bodoh menghina hikmat dan didikan.
8 Hear, my son, the instruction of thy father, and forsake not the teaching of thy mother;
Hai anakku, dengarkanlah didikan ayahmu, dan jangan menyia-nyiakan ajaran ibumu
9 For they shall be a chaplet of grace unto thy head, and chains about thy neck.
sebab karangan bunga yang indah itu bagi kepalamu, dan suatu kalung bagi lehermu.
10 My son, if sinners entice thee, consent thou not.
Hai anakku, jikalau orang berdosa hendak membujuk engkau, janganlah engkau menurut;
11 If they say: 'Come with us, let us lie in wait for blood, let us lurk for the innocent without cause;
jikalau mereka berkata: "Marilah ikut kami, biarlah kita menghadang darah, biarlah kita mengintai orang yang tidak bersalah, dengan tidak semena-mena;
12 Let us swallow them up alive as the grave, and whole, as those that go down into the pit; (Sheol h7585)
biarlah kita menelan mereka hidup-hidup seperti dunia orang mati, bulat-bulat, seperti mereka yang turun ke liang kubur; (Sheol h7585)
13 We shall find all precious substance, we shall fill our houses with spoil;
kita akan mendapat pelbagai benda yang berharga, kita akan memenuhi rumah kita dengan barang rampasan;
14 Cast in thy lot among us; let us all have one purse' —
buanglah undimu ke tengah-tengah kami, satu pundi-pundi bagi kita sekalian."
15 My son, walk not thou in the way with them, restrain thy foot from their path;
Hai anakku, janganlah engkau hidup menurut tingkah laku mereka, tahanlah kakimu dari pada jalan mereka,
16 For their feet run to evil, and they make haste to shed blood.
karena kaki mereka lari menuju kejahatan dan bergegas-gegas untuk menumpahkan darah.
17 For in vain the net is spread in the eyes of any bird;
Sebab percumalah jaring dibentangkan di depan mata segala yang bersayap,
18 And these lie in wait for their own blood, they lurk for their own lives.
padahal mereka menghadang darahnya sendiri dan mengintai nyawanya sendiri.
19 So are the ways of every one that is greedy of gain; it taketh away the life of the owners thereof.
Demikianlah pengalaman setiap orang yang loba akan keuntungan gelap, yang mengambil nyawa orang yang mempunyainya.
20 Wisdom crieth aloud in the streets, she uttereth her voice in the broad places;
Hikmat berseru nyaring di jalan-jalan, di lapangan-lapangan ia memperdengarkan suaranya,
21 She calleth at the head of the noisy streets, at the entrances of the gates, in the city, she uttereth her words:
di atas tembok-tembok ia berseru-seru, di depan pintu-pintu gerbang kota ia mengucapkan kata-katanya.
22 'How long, ye thoughtless, will ye love thoughtlessness? And how long will scorners delight them in scorning, and fools hate knowledge?
"Berapa lama lagi, hai orang yang tak berpengalaman, kamu masih cinta kepada keadaanmu itu, pencemooh masih gemar kepada cemooh, dan orang bebal benci kepada pengetahuan?
23 Turn you at my reproof; behold, I will pour out my spirit unto you, I will make known my words unto you.
Berpalinglah kamu kepada teguranku! Sesungguhnya, aku hendak mencurahkan isi hatiku kepadamu dan memberitahukan perkataanku kepadamu.
24 Because I have called, and ye refused, I have stretched out my hand, and no man attended,
Oleh karena kamu menolak ketika aku memanggil, dan tidak ada orang yang menghiraukan ketika aku mengulurkan tanganku,
25 But ye have set at nought all my counsel, and would none of my reproof;
bahkan, kamu mengabaikan nasihatku, dan tidak mau menerima teguranku,
26 I also, in your calamity, will laugh, I will mock when your dread cometh;
maka aku juga akan menertawakan celakamu; aku akan berolok-olok, apabila kedahsyatan datang ke atasmu,
27 When your dread cometh as a storm, and your calamity cometh on as a whirlwind; when trouble and distress come upon you.
apabila kedahsyatan datang ke atasmu seperti badai, dan celaka melanda kamu seperti angin puyuh, apabila kesukaran dan kecemasan datang menimpa kamu.
28 Then will they call me, but I will not answer, they will seek me earnestly, but they shall not find me.
Pada waktu itu mereka akan berseru kepadaku, tetapi tidak akan kujawab, mereka akan bertekun mencari aku, tetapi tidak akan menemukan aku.
29 For that they hated knowledge, and did not choose the fear of the LORD;
Oleh karena mereka benci kepada pengetahuan dan tidak memilih takut akan TUHAN,
30 They would none of my counsel, they despised all my reproof.
tidak mau menerima nasihatku, tetapi menolak segala teguranku,
31 Therefore shall they eat of the fruit of their own way, and be filled with their own devices.
maka mereka akan memakan buah perbuatan mereka, dan menjadi kenyang oleh rencana mereka.
32 For the waywardness of the thoughtless shall slay them, and the confidence of fools shall destroy them.
Sebab orang yang tak berpengalaman akan dibunuh oleh keengganannya, dan orang bebal akan dibinasakan oleh kelalaiannya.
33 But whoso hearkeneth unto me shall dwell securely, and shall be quiet without fear of evil.'
Tetapi siapa mendengarkan aku, ia akan tinggal dengan aman, terlindung dari pada kedahsyatan malapetaka."
