Proverbs 25
1 These also are proverbs of Solomon, which the men of Hezekiah king of Judah copied out.
Ce sont aussi des Proverbes de Salomon, que recueillirent les hommes d'Ezéchias, roi de Juda.
2 It is the glory of God to conceal a thing; but the glory of kings is to search out a matter.
La gloire de Dieu, c'est de cacher ses desseins, et la gloire des rois, de les pénétrer.
3 The heaven for height, and the earth for depth, and the heart of kings is unsearchable.
Comme les Cieux en hauteur, la terre en profondeur, que le cœur du roi soit insondable!
4 Take away the dross from the silver, and there cometh forth a vessel for the refiner;
De l'argent enlève les scories, et il en sort pour l'orfèvre un vase;
5 Take away the wicked from before the king, and his throne shall be established in righteousness.
ôte l'impie des alentours du roi, et par la justice son trône s'affermira.
6 Glorify not thyself in the presence of the king, and stand not in the place of great men;
Ne fais pas le glorieux devant un roi, et ne te mets pas au rang des Grands;
7 For better is it that it be said unto thee: 'Come up hither', than that thou shouldest be put lower in the presence of the prince, whom thine eyes have seen.
car mieux vaut qu'on te dise: Monte ici! que d'être humilié devant le prince que tes yeux voient.
8 Go not forth hastily to strive, lest thou know not what to do in the end thereof, when thy neighbour hath put thee to shame.
Ne te hâte pas d'entrer en procès, de peur de ce qu'à la fin tu pourrais faire, si ta partie t'outrage!
9 Debate thy cause with thy neighbour, but reveal not the secret of another;
Plaide ton procès contre ta partie, mais ne révèle pas le secret d'autrui;
10 Lest he that heareth it revile thee, and thine infamy turn not away.
de peur que celui qui t'entendrait, ne te fasse honte, et que ton infamie ne s'efface pas.
11 A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in settings of silver.
Des pommes d'or sur une ciselure d'argent, tel est un mot dit à propos.
12 As an ear-ring of gold, and an ornament of fine gold, so is a wise reprover upon an obedient ear.
Anneau d'or, collier d'or fin, tel est le sage moniteur pour l'oreille docile.
13 As the cold of snow in the time of harvest, so is a faithful messenger to him that sendeth him; for he refresheth the soul of his master.
Le frais de la neige au temps de la moisson, tel est le messager sûr pour celui qui le dépêche: il restaure l'âme de son maître.
14 As vapours and wind without rain, so is he that boasteth himself of a false gift.
Nuage et vent, mais point de pluie, c'est l'homme qui se vante en mentant de donner.
15 By long forbearing is a ruler persuaded, and a soft tongue breaketh the bone.
A la patience un prince se laisse gagner, et la langue, toute molle qu'elle est, brise des os.
16 Hast thou found honey? eat so much as is sufficient for thee, lest thou be filled therewith, and vomit it.
Si tu trouves du miel, manges-en ce qui t'est suffisant, de peur d'en avoir à satiété, et de le rejeter.
17 Let thy foot be seldom in thy neighbour's house; lest he be sated with thee, and hate thee.
Mets rarement le pied dans la maison de ton ami, de peur qu'il ne se lasse de toi, et ne te prenne en aversion.
18 As a maul, and a sword, and a sharp arrow, so is a man that beareth false witness against his neighbour.
Un marteau, une épée, une flèche aiguë, c'est l'homme qui dépose contre son frère en faux témoin.
19 Confidence in an unfaithful man in time of trouble is like a broken tooth, and a foot out of joint.
Une dent cassée, un pied vacillant, c'est au jour de détresse le perfide en qui l'on se lie.
20 As one that taketh off a garment in cold weather, and as vinegar upon nitre, so is he that singeth songs to a heavy heart.
Oter son manteau au jour de la froidure, verser du vinaigre sur du natron, c'est chanter des chansons à un cœur triste.
21 If thine enemy be hungry, give him bread to eat, and if he be thirsty, give him water to drink;
Si ton ennemi a faim, donne-lui du pain à manger, s'il a soif, donne-lui de l'eau à boire,
22 For thou wilt heap coals of fire upon his head, and the LORD will reward thee.
car ainsi tu lui mets sur la tête des charbons ardents, et l'Éternel te récompensera.
23 The north wind bringeth forth rain, and a backbiting tongue an angry countenance.
Le vent du nord produit la pluie, et la calomnie sourde, le visage irrité.
24 It is better to dwell in a corner of the housetop, than in a house in common with a contentious woman.
Mieux vaut habiter le coin d'un toit, que près d'une femme querelleuse, et le même logis.
25 As cold waters to a faint soul, so is good news from a far country.
Une eau fraîche pour un homme fatigué, c'est une bonne nouvelle venant d'un pays lointain.
26 As a troubled fountain, and a corrupted spring, so is a righteous man that giveth way before the wicked.
Une source troublée, et un puits gâté, c'est le juste succombant sous l'impie.
27 It is not good to eat much honey; so for men to search out their own glory is not glory.
Il n'est pas bon de manger trop de miel, et sonder les choses difficiles est trop difficile.
28 Like a city broken down and without a wall, so is he whose spirit is without restraint.
Une ville forcée et sans murs, tel est l'homme qui n'a pas l'empire de son cœur.
