Proverbs 18
1 He that separateth himself seeketh his own desire, and snarlest against all sound wisdom.
Eripurainen etsii mitä hänelle kelpaa, ja sekoittaa itsensä kaikkiin asioihin.
2 A fool hath no delight in understanding, but only that his heart may lay itself bare.
Tyhmällä ei ole himo ymmärrykseen, vaan niitä ilmoittamaan, mitkä ovat hänen sydämessänsä.
3 When the wicked cometh, there cometh also contempt, and with ignominy reproach.
Jumalattoman tullessa tulee ylönkatse, pilkka ja häpiä.
4 The words of a man's mouth are as deep waters; a flowing brook, a fountain of wisdom.
Sanat ihmisen suussa ovat niinkuin syvät vedet, ja viisauden lähde on täynnä virtaa.
5 It is not good to respect the person of the wicked, so as to turn aside the righteous in judgment.
Ei ole hyvä katsoa jumalattomain muotoa, ja sortaa vanhurskasta tuomiossa.
6 A fool's lips enter into contention, and his mouth calleth for strokes.
Tyhmän huulet saattavat toran, ja hänen suunsa noudattaa haavoja.
7 A fool's mouth is his ruin, and his lips are the snare of his soul.
Tyhmän suu häpäisee itsensä, ja hänen huulensa ovat paula omalle omalle sielulle.
8 The words of a whisperer are as dainty morsels, and they go down into the innermost parts of the belly.
Panetteian sanat ovat haavat, ja käyvät läpi sydämen.
9 Even one that is slack in his work is brother to him that is a destroyer.
Joka laiska on työssänsä, hän on sen veli, joka vahinkoa tekee.
10 The name of the LORD is a strong tower: the righteous runneth into it, and is set up on high.
Herran nimi on vahva linna: vanhurskas juoksee sinne, ja tulee varjelluksi.
11 The rich man's wealth is his strong city, and as a high wall in his own conceit.
Rikkaan tavara on hänelle vahva kaupunki, ja niinkuin korkea muuri hänen mielestänsä.
12 Before destruction the heart of a man is haughty, and before honour goeth humility.
Kuin joku lankee, niin hänen sydämensä ensisti tulee ylpiäksi, ja ennenkuin joku kunniaan tulee, pitää hänen nöyrän oleman.
13 He that giveth answer before he heareth, it is folly and confusion unto him.
Joka vastaa ennekuin hän kuulee, se on hänelle hulluudeksi ja häpiäksi.
14 The spirit of a man will sustain his infirmity; but a broken spirit who can bear?
Ihmisen henki pitää ylös hänen heikkoutensa; vaan murheellista henkeä kuka voi kärsiä?
15 The heart of the prudent getteth knowledge; and the ear of the wise seeketh knowledge.
Ymmärtäväinen sydän saa viisauden, ja viisasten korva etsii taitoa.
16 A man's gift maketh room for him, and bringeth him before great men.
Ihmisen lahja tekee hänelle avaran sian, ja saattaa suurten herrain eteen.
17 He that pleadeth his cause first seemeth just; but his neighbour cometh and searcheth him out.
Jokaisella on ensisti omassa asiassansa oikeus; vaan kuin hänen lähimmäisensä tulee, niin se löydetäään.
18 The lot causeth strife to cease, and parteth asunder the contentious.
Arpa asettaa riidan, ja eroitaa voimallisten vaiheella.
19 A brother offended is harder to be won than a strong city; and their contentions are like the bars of a castle.
Vihoitettu veli pitää puoltansa lujemmin kuin vahva kaupunki; ja riita pitää kovemmin puolensa kuin telki linnan edessä.
20 A man's belly shall be filled with the fruit of his mouth; with the increase of his lips shall he be satisfied.
Sen jälkeen kullekin maksetaan, kuin hänen suunsa on puhunut; ja hän ravitaan huultensa hedelmästä.
21 Death and life are in the power of the tongue; and they that indulge it shall eat the fruit thereof.
Kuolema ja elämä on kielen voimassa: joka häntä rakastaa, se saa syösä hänen hedelmästänsä.
22 Whoso findeth a wife findeth a great good, and obtaineth favour of the LORD.
Joka aviovaimon osaa, hän löytäää hyvän kappaleen, ja saa mielisuosionsa Herralta.
23 The poor useth entreaties; but the rich answereth impudently.
Köyhä mies puhuu nöyrästi, vaan rikas vastaa ylpiästi.
24 There are friends that one hath to his own hurt; but there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother.
Ihminen, jolla on ystävä, pitää oleman ystävällinen; sillä ystävä pitää lujemmin hänen kanssansa kuin veli.
