Proverbs 17
1 Better is a dry morsel and quietness therewith, than a house full of feasting with strife.
कलहले भरिएको घरमा भोज खानुभन्दा शान्तिसाथ रोटीको सुक्खा टुक्रा खानु उत्तम हो ।
2 A servant that dealeth wisely shall have rule over a son that dealeth shamefully, and shall have part of the inheritance among the brethren.
बुद्धिमान् नोकरले लाजमर्दो गरी काम गर्ने छोरोमाथि शासन जमाउँछ, र दाजुभाइ सरह नै पैतृक-सम्पत्ति पाउने छ ।
3 The refining pot is for silver, and the furnace for gold; but the LORD trieth the hearts.
चाँदी पगाल्न भाँडो र सुन खार्न आरन हुन्छ, तर परमप्रभुले नै हृदय जाँच गर्नुहुन्छ ।
4 A evil-doer giveth heed to wicked lips; and a liar giveth ear to a mischievous tongue.
खराब काम गर्नेले दुष्टको ओठमा ध्यान दिन्छ । झुट बोल्नेले विनाशक जिब्रोमा कान लगाउँछ ।
5 Whoso mocketh the poor blasphemeth his Maker; and he that is glad at calamity shall not be unpunished.
गरिबलाई गिल्ला गर्नेले आफ्नो सृष्टिकर्ताको अपमान गर्छ, र अर्काको विपत्तिमा रमाउनेचाहिँ दण्डविना उम्कने छैन ।
6 Children's children are the crown of old men; and the glory of children are their fathers.
नाति-नातिनाहरू पाकाहरूका मुकुट हुन्, र बुबाआमाले तिनीहरूमा आदर ल्याउँछन् ।
7 Overbearing speech becometh not a churl; much less do lying lips a prince.
सिपालु बोलीवचन मूर्खलाई सुहाउँदैन । शासकको लागि झुट बोल्ने ओठ झन कति असुहाउँदो हुन्छ!
8 A gift is as a precious stone in the eyes of him that hath it; whithersoever he turneth, he prospereth.
घुस दिनेको लागि यो टुनाजस्तै हो । त्यो जहाँ गए तापनि सफल हुन्छ ।
9 He that covereth a transgression seeketh love; but he that harpeth on a matter estrangeth a familiar friend.
चित्त दुखाइलाई बेवास्ता गर्नेले प्रेमको खोजी गर्छ, तर विषयलाई दोहोर्याउनेले घनिष्ठ मित्रहरूमा फाटो ल्याउँछ ।
10 A rebuke entereth deeper into a man of understanding than a hundred stripes into a fool.
मूर्खलाई सय कोर्रा प्रहार गर्नुभन्दा बरु समझशक्ति भएको व्यक्तिलाई एउटा हप्की काफी हुन्छ ।
11 A rebellious man seeketh only evil; therefore a cruel messenger shall be sent against him.
दुष्ट व्यक्तिले केवल विद्रोहको खोजी गर्दछ । त्यसैले त्यसको विरुद्धमा क्रुर दूत पठाइन्छ ।
12 Let a bear robbed of her whelps meet a man, rather than a fool in his folly.
मूर्खलाई त्यसको मूर्खतामा भेट्नुभन्दा बरु बच्चा खोसिएको भालुसित भेट गर्नु उत्तम हुन्छ ।
13 Whoso rewardeth evil for good, evil shall not depart from his house.
जसले भलाइको साटो खराबी गर्छ, खराबीले त्यसको घर कहिल्यै छोड्ने छैन ।
14 The beginning of strife is as when one letteth out water; therefore leave off contention, before the quarrel break out.
द्वन्द्वको सुरुआत सर्वत्र पानी फैलनुजस्तै हो । त्यसैले विवाद चर्किनुअगि नै त्यहाँबाट हिँडिहाल ।
15 He that justifieth the wicked, and he that condemneth the righteous, even they both are an abomination to the LORD.
दुष्ट मानिसलाई निर्दोष ठहराउने व्यक्ति र धर्मी मानिसलाई दण्ड दिने व्यक्ति दुवै नै परमप्रभुको लागि घृणित छन् ।
16 Wherefore is there a price in the hand of a fool to buy wisdom, seeing he hath no understanding?
बुद्धिको विषयमा सिक्न मूर्खले किन पैसा तिर्ने जब कि त्योसित यसलाई सिक्ने कुनै क्षमता नै छैन?
17 A friend loveth at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.
मित्रले हर समय प्रेम गरिरहन्छ, र दाजुभाइचाहिँ कष्टको समयको लागि जन्मेका हुन्छन् ।
18 A man void of understanding is he that striketh hands, and becometh surety in the presence of his neighbour.
बेसमझको मानिसले वाचा बाँध्च, र आफ्नो छिमेकीको ऋणप्रति जिम्मेवार बन्छ ।
19 He loveth transgression that loveth strife; he that exalteth his gate seeketh destruction.
द्वन्द्वलाई प्रेम गर्नेले पापलाई प्रेम गर्छ । आफ्नो ढोकाको सङ्घार अति अग्लो बनाउनेले हड्डी भँचाउने छ ।
20 He that hath a froward heart findeth no good; and he that hath a perverse tongue falleth into evil.
कुटिल हृदय भएको मानिसले कुनै असल कुरो पाउँदैन । छली जिब्रो भएको मानिस विपत्तिमा पर्छ ।
21 He that begetteth a fool doeth it to his sorrow; and the father of a churl hath no joy.
जो मूर्खको बुबाआमा, तिनीहरूले आफैमा शोक ल्याउँछन्, र मूर्खको बुबामा कुनै आनन्द हुँदैन ।
22 A merry heart is a good medicine; but a broken spirit drieth the bones.
आनन्दित हृदय असल औषधी हो, तर टुटेको हृदयले हड्डीहरूलाई सुकाउँछ ।
23 A wicked man taketh a gift out of the bosom, to pervert the ways of justice.
न्यायको मार्गलाई बङ्ग्याउन दुष्ट मानिसले गुप्त घुसलाई स्वीकार गर्छ ।
24 Wisdom is before him that hath understanding; but the eyes of a fool are in the ends of the earth.
समझशक्ति भएको व्यक्तिले बुद्धितिर आफ्नो मन लगाउँछ, तर मूर्खको आँखा पृथ्वीको कुनाकुनामा पुग्छ ।
25 A foolish son is vexation to his father, and bitterness to her that bore him.
मूर्ख छोरो आफ्नो बुबाको लागि शोक हो, र त्यसलाई जन्माउने आमाको लागि तिक्तता हो ।
26 To punish also the righteous is not good, nor to strike the noble for their uprightness.
धर्मात्मालाई दण्ड दिनु कहिल्यै असल हुँदैन, न त निष्ठा भएका कुलीन मानिसहरूलाई कोर्रा लगाउनु असल हुन्छ ।
27 He that spareth his words hath knowledge; and he that husbandeth his spirit is a man of discernment.
ज्ञान भएको व्यक्तिले थोरै वचन बोल्दछ, र समझशक्ति भएको व्यक्तिचाहिँ ठन्डा मिजासको हुन्छ ।
28 Even a fool, when he holdeth his peace, is counted wise; and he that shutteth his lips is esteemed as a man of understanding.
चुप लागेमा मूर्खलाई पनि बुद्धिमान् ठानिन्छ । त्यसले आफ्नो मुख बन्द गर्दा त्यसलाई विवेकी मानिन्छ ।
