Proverbs 10
1 The proverbs of Solomon. A wise son maketh a glad father; but a foolish son is the grief of his mother.
Proverbes de Salomon. Un fils sage fait la joie de son père, et un fils sot le tourment de sa mère.
2 Treasures of wickedness profit nothing; but righteousness delivereth from death.
Les trésors de l’iniquité ne profitent pas, tandis que la vertu sauve de la mort.
3 The LORD will not suffer the soul of the righteous to famish; but He thrusteth away the desire of the wicked.
L’Eternel ne laisse pas l’âme du juste souffrir de la faim, mais il refoule l’avidité des méchants.
4 He becometh poor that dealeth with a slack hand; but the hand of the diligent maketh rich.
Travailler d’une main indolente, c’est s’appauvrir; un bras laborieux enrichit.
5 A wise son gathereth in summer; but a son that doeth shamefully sleepeth in harvest.
Amasser des provisions en été est d’un homme intelligent; somnoler pendant la moisson, c’est se couvrir de honte.
6 Blessings are upon the head of the righteous; but the mouth of the wicked concealeth violence.
Les bénédictions abondent sur la tête du juste; la bouche des méchants recèle la violence.
7 The memory of the righteous shall be for a blessing; but the name of the wicked shall rot.
La mémoire du juste est une bénédiction; le nom des méchants tombe en pourriture.
8 The wise in heart will receive commandments; but a prating fool shall fall.
Un esprit sage accueille des injonctions; un sot bavard se crée des embarras.
9 He that walketh uprightly walketh securely; but he that perverteth his ways shall be found out.
Qui marche dans la droiture marche avec sécurité; qui suit des voies tortueuses sera démasqué.
10 He that winketh with the eye causeth sorrow; and a prating fool shall fall.
Cligner de l’œil, c’est causer du déplaisir; un sot bavard se crée des embarras.
11 The mouth of the righteous is a fountain of life; but the mouth of the wicked concealeth violence.
La bouche du juste est une source de vie; la bouche des méchants recèle la violence.
12 Hatred stirreth up strifes; but love covereth all transgressions.
La haine suscite des querelles; l’amour couvre toutes les fautes.
13 In the lips of him that hath discernment wisdom is found; but a rod is for the back of him that is void of understanding.
Sur les lèvres de l’homme intelligent se trouve la sagesse; le bâton est pour le dos des gens bornés.
14 Wise men lay up knowledge; but the mouth of the foolish is an imminent ruin.
Les sages ont la pudeur de leur science; la bouche de l’insensé est un danger toujours menaçant.
15 The rich man's wealth is his strong city; the ruin of the poor is their poverty.
La fortune du riche est pour lui une place forte; un sujet de crainte pour les pauvres, c’est leur misère.
16 The wages of the righteous is life; the increase of the wicked is sin.
La récompense du juste, c’est la vie; le revenu du méchant c’est l’expiation.
17 He is in the way of life that heedeth instruction; but he that forsaketh reproof erreth.
Tenir compte des réprimandes, c’est suivre le chemin de la vie; fuir les remontrances, c’est s’égarer.
18 He that hideth hatred is of lying lips; and he that uttereth a slander is a fool.
Dissimuler la haine est le fait de lèvres mensongères; qui débite des calomnies est un sot.
19 In the multitude of words there wanteth not transgression; but he that refraineth his lips is wise.
Qui parle beaucoup ne saurait éviter le péché; mettre un frein à ses lèvres, c’est faire preuve d’intelligence.
20 The tongue of the righteous is as choice silver; the heart of the wicked is little worth.
La langue du juste est de l’argent de bon aloi; le cœur des méchants ne vaut pas cher.
21 The lips of the righteous feed many; but the foolish die for want of understanding.
Le juste nourrit la foule de sa parole; les insensés meurent par leur manque d’intelligence.
22 The blessing of the LORD, it maketh rich, and toil addeth nothing thereto.
C’Est la bénédiction de l’Eternel qui enrichit, et nos efforts n’y ajoutent rien.
23 It is as sport to a fool to do wickedness, and so is wisdom to a man of discernment.
Commettre une infamie est un jeu pour le sot; de même se comporter avec sagesse pour l’homme avisé.
24 The fear of the wicked, it shall come upon him; and the desire of the righteous shall be granted.
Ce que redoute le méchant lui survient; ce que souhaite le juste, on le lui accorde.
25 When the whirlwind passeth, the wicked is no more; but the righteous is an everlasting foundation.
Une bourrasque a passé, et le méchant n’est plus; mais le juste est fondé pour l’éternité.
26 As vinegar to the teeth, and as smoke to the eyes, so is the sluggard to them that send him.
Ce que le vinaigre est pour les dents, la fumée pour les yeux, le paresseux l’est pour ceux qui l’envoient.
27 The fear of the LORD prolongeth days; but the years of the wicked shall be shortened.
La crainte de l’Eternel prolonge les jours, mais les années des méchants sont courtes.
28 The hope of the righteous is gladness; but the expectation of the wicked shall perish.
L’Attente des justes cause de joie; l’attente des méchants cause de déception.
29 The way of the LORD is a stronghold to the upright, but ruin to the workers of iniquity.
La voie de l’Eternel est une sauvegarde pour l’innocence et une menace pour les artisans d’iniquité.
30 The righteous shall never be moved; but the wicked shall not inhabit the land.
Le juste ne chancelle jamais, tandis que les méchants sont instables sur la terre.
31 The mouth of the righteous buddeth with wisdom; but the froward tongue shall be cut off.
La bouche du juste est féconde en sagesse; la langue perverse sera extirpée.
32 The lips of the righteous know what is acceptable; but the mouth of the wicked is all frowardness.
Les lèvres des justes sont coutumières de bienveillance; la bouche des méchants ne connaît que fausseté.
