Numbers 23

1 And Balaam said unto Balak: 'Build me here seven altars, and prepare me here seven bullocks and seven rams.'

Alors Balaam dit à Balak: Construis-moi ici sept autels et mets ici à ma disposition sept taureaux et sept béliers.

2 And Balak did as Balaam had spoken; and Balak and Balaam offered on every altar a bullock and a ram.

Et Balak fit ce que Balaam lui demandait, et Balak et Balaam sacrifièrent un taureau et un bélier sur chaque autel.

3 And Balaam said unto Balak: 'Stand by thy burnt-offering, and I will go; peradventure the LORD will come to meet me; and whatsoever He showeth me I will tell thee.' And he went to a bare height.

Et Balaam dit à Balak: Tiens-toi auprès de ton holocauste, et moi je vais m'éloigner: peut-être l'Éternel viendra-t-Il au-devant de moi et je te rapporterai ce qu'il m'aura dévoilé. Et il alla sur une colline.

4 And God met Balaam; and he said unto Him: 'I have prepared the seven altars, and I have offered up a bullock and a ram on every altar.'

Alors l'Éternel vint au-devant de Balaam qui Lui dit: J'ai disposé sept autels et sacrifié un taureau et un bélier sur chaque autel.

5 And the LORD put a word in Balaam's mouth, and said: 'Return unto Balak, and thus thou shalt speak.'

Et l'Éternel mit des paroles dans la bouche de Balaam et dit: Retourne vers Balak, et tu lui parleras ainsi.

6 And he returned unto him, and, lo, he stood by his burnt-offering, he, and all the princes of Moab.

Et il revint vers lui, et voici il se tenait près de son holocauste, lui et tous les princes de Moab.

7 And he took up his parable, and said: From Aram Balak bringeth me, the king of Moab from the mountains of the East: 'Come, curse me Jacob, and come, execrate Israel.'

Alors Balaam prononça son oracle et dit: D'Aram m'appelle Balak; le Roi de Moab; des montagnes de l'Orient. « Tiens, dit-il, pour moi maudis Jacob! viens! voue Israël à la furie! »

8 How shall I curse, whom God hath not cursed? And how shall I execrate, whom the LORD hath not execrated?

Comment maudirais-je celui que Dieu ne maudit pas, et vouerais-je à la furie, quand l'Éternel n'y voue pas?

9 For from the top of the rocks I see him, and from the hills I behold him: lo, it is a people that shall dwell alone, and shall not be reckoned among the nations.

Car de la cime des rochers je le découvre; et des hauteurs je le contemple: voici, ce peuple habite solitaire, et parmi les nations il ne se compte pas.

10 Who hath counted the dust of Jacob, or numbered the stock of Israel? Let me die the death of the righteous, and let mine end be like his!

Qui supputera la poussière de Jacob, et dira le nombre d'un seul quart d'Israël? Que je meure de la mort des justes, et que mon avenir soit pareil au leur!

11 And Balak said unto Balaam: 'What hast thou done unto me? I took thee to curse mine enemies, and, behold, thou hast blessed them altogether.'

Alors Balak dit à Balaam: Que m'as-tu fait? Je t'ai pris pour maudire mes ennemis, et voilà que tu n'as fait que bénir!

12 And he answered and said: 'Must I not take heed to speak that which the LORD putteth in my mouth?'

Et il répondit et dit: Ne dois-je pas veiller à dire ce que l'Éternel met dans ma bouche?

13 And Balak said unto him: 'Come, I pray thee, with me unto another place, from whence thou mayest see them; thou shalt see but the utmost part of them, and shalt not see them all; and curse me them from thence.'

Et Balak lui dit: Viens donc avec moi dans un autre lieu d'où tu verras ce peuple; tu n'en verras que l'extrémité, et tu n'en verras pas la totalité. Et de là maudis-le-moi.

14 And he took him into the field of Zophim, to the top of Pisgah, and built seven altars, and offered up a bullock and a ram on every altar.

Et il le mena au plateau des sentinelles, sur le sommet du Pisga, où il éleva sept autels et sacrifia un taureau et un bélier sur chaque autel.

15 And he said unto Balak: 'Stand here by thy burnt-offering, while I go toward a meeting yonder.'

Et Balaam dit à Balak: Tiens-toi ici près de ton holocauste, et j'irai là chercher une rencontre.

16 And the LORD met Balaam, and put a word in his mouth, and said: 'Return unto Balak, and thus shalt thou speak.'

Alors l'Éternel vint à là rencontre de Balaam et mit des paroles dans sa bouche et dit: Retourne vers Balak et lui parle ainsi.

17 And he came to him, and, lo, he stood by his burnt-offering, and the princes of Moab with him. And Balak said unto him: 'What hath the LORD spoken?'

Et il revint vers lui; et voici, il se tenait près de son holocauste et les princes de Moab avec lui; et Balak lui dit: Qu'a dit l'Éternel?

18 And he took up his parable, and said: Arise, Balak, and hear; give ear unto me, thou son of Zippor:

Alors Balaam prononça son oracle et dit: Sus! Balak! écoute! prête-moi l'oreille, fils de Tsippor

19 God is not a man, that He should lie; neither the son of man, that He should repent: when He hath said, will He not do it? or when He hath spoken, will He not make it good?

Dieu n'est pas un homme pour mentir, ni fils d'un homme pour se repentir. Dira-t-Il et ne fera-t-Il pas? Promettra-t-Il et ne tiendra-t-Il pas?

20 Behold, I am bidden to bless; and when He hath blessed, I cannot call it back.

Voici, j'ai reçu [l'ordre] de bénir! Il a béni, je ne puis rétracter.

21 None hath beheld iniquity in Jacob, neither hath one seen perverseness in Israel; the LORD his God is with him, and the shouting for the King is among them.

Il ne découvre aucun mal en Jacob, et ne voit pas d'iniquité en Israël. L'Éternel, leur Dieu, les accompagne, et les trompettes du Roi sonnent au milieu d'eux.

22 God who brought them forth out of Egypt is for them like the lofty horns of the wild-ox.

Dieu les fit sortir de l'Egypte; ils ont la vélocité du buffle.

23 For there is no enchantment with Jacob, neither is there any divination with Israel; now is it said of Jacob and of Israel: 'What hath God wrought!'

Le charme ne peut rien contre Jacob, ni l'enchantement contre Israël. Un jour à Jacob elle sera annoncée et à Israël, l'œuvre de l'Éternel.

24 Behold a people that riseth up as a lioness, and as a lion doth he lift himself up; he shall not lie down until he eat of the prey, and drink the blood of the slain.

Voici, comme la lionne, le peuple se lève, et comme le lion, il se dresse. Il ne se couche pas qu'il n'ait dévoré la proie, et bu le sang des blessés.

25 And Balak said unto Balaam: 'Neither curse them at all, nor bless them at all.'

Alors Balak dit à Balaam: Ne le maudis ni ne le bénis!

26 But Balaam answered and said unto Balak: 'Told not I thee, saying: All that the LORD speaketh, that I must do?'

Et Balaam répondit et dit à Balak: Ne t'ai-je pas parlé ainsi: Je ferai tout ce que me dira l'Éternel?

27 And Balak said unto Balaam: 'Come now, I will take thee unto another place; peradventure it will please God that thou mayest curse me them from thence.'

Mais Balak dit à Balaam: Viens donc, je te conduirai dans un autre lieu, si Dieu le trouve bon, afin que de là tu me maudisses ce peuple.

28 And Balak took Balaam unto the top of Peor, that looketh down upon the desert.

Et Balak conduisit Balaam au sommet du Pehor qui domine la plaine du désert.

29 And Balaam said unto Balak: 'Build me here seven altars, and prepare me here seven bullocks and seven rams.'

Et Balaam dit à Balak: Construis-moi ici sept autels et mets ici à ma disposition sept taureaux et sept béliers.

30 And Balak did as Balaam had said, and offered up a bullock and a ram on every altar.

Et Balak fit ce que demandait Balaam et sacrifia un taureau et un bélier sur chaque autel.
