Aionian Verses
And all his sons and all his daughters rose up to comfort him; but he refused to be comforted; and he said: 'Nay, but I will go down to the grave to my son mourning.' And his father wept for him. (Sheol h7585)
| ויקמו כל בניו וכל בנתיו לנחמו וימאן להתנחם ויאמר כי ארד אל בני אבל שאלה ויבך אתו אביו (Sheol h7585) |
And he said: 'My son shall not go down with you; for his brother is dead, and he only is left; if harm befall him by the way in which ye go, then will ye bring down my gray hairs with sorrow to the grave. (Sheol h7585)

it will come to pass, when he seeth that the lad is not with us, that he will die; and thy servants will bring down the gray hairs of thy servant our father with sorrow to the grave. (Sheol h7585)
| והיה כראותו כי אין הנער--ומת והורידו עבדיך את שיבת עבדך אבינו ביגון--שאלה (Sheol h7585) |
But if the LORD make a new thing, and the ground open her mouth, and swallow them up, with all that appertain unto them, and they go down alive into the pit, then ye shall understand that these men have despised the LORD.' (Sheol h7585)
| ואם בריאה יברא יהוה ופצתה האדמה את פיה ובלעה אתם ואת כל אשר להם וירדו חיים שאלה--וידעתם כי נאצו האנשים האלה את יהוה (Sheol h7585) |
So they, and all that appertained to them, went down alive into the pit; and the earth closed upon them, and they perished from among the assembly. (Sheol h7585)

For a fire is kindled in My nostril, and burneth unto the depths of the nether-world, and devoureth the earth with her produce, and setteth ablaze the foundations of the mountains. (Sheol h7585)
| כי אש קדחה באפי ותיקד עד שאול תחתית ותאכל ארץ ויבלה ותלהט מוסדי הרים (Sheol h7585) |
The LORD killeth, and maketh alive; He bringeth down to the grave, and bringeth up. (Sheol h7585)

The cords of Sheol surrounded me; the snares of Death confronted me. (Sheol h7585)

Do therefore according to thy wisdom, and let not his hoar head go down to the grave in peace. (Sheol h7585)

As the cloud is consumed and vanisheth away, so he that goeth down to the grave shall come up no more. (Sheol h7585)

It is high as heaven; what canst thou do? Deeper than the nether-world; what canst thou know? (Sheol h7585)

Oh that Thou wouldest hide me in the nether-world, that Thou wouldest keep me secret, until Thy wrath be past, that Thou wouldest appoint me a set time, and remember me! — (Sheol h7585)
| מי יתן בשאול תצפנני-- תסתירני עד-שוב אפך תשית לי חק ותזכרני (Sheol h7585) |
If I look for the nether-world as my house; if I have spread my couch in the darkness; (Sheol h7585)

They shall go down to the bars of the nether-world, when we are at rest together in the dust. (Sheol h7585)
| בדי שאל תרדנה אם-יחד על-עפר נחת (Sheol h7585) |
They spend their days in prosperity, and peacefully they go down to the grave. (Sheol h7585)

Drought and heat consume the snow waters; so doth the nether-world those that have sinned. (Sheol h7585)
| ציה גם-חם יגזלו מימי-שלג שאול חטאו (Sheol h7585) |
The nether-world is naked before Him, and Destruction hath no covering. (Sheol h7585)
| ערום שאול נגדו ואין כסות לאבדון (Sheol h7585) |
For in death there is no remembrance of Thee; in the nether-world who will give Thee thanks? (Sheol h7585)

The wicked shall return to the nether-world, even all the nations that forget God. (Sheol h7585)

For Thou wilt not abandon my soul to the nether-world; neither wilt Thou suffer Thy godly one to see the pit. (Sheol h7585)

The cords of Sheol surrounded me; the snares of Death confronted me. (Sheol h7585)

O LORD, Thou broughtest up my soul from the nether-world; Thou didst keep me alive, that I should not go down to the pit. (Sheol h7585)

O LORD, let me not be ashamed, for I have called upon Thee; let the wicked be ashamed, let them be put to silence in the nether-world. (Sheol h7585)

Like sheep they are appointed for the nether-world; death shall be their shepherd; and the upright shall have dominion over them in the morning; and their form shall be for the nether-world to wear away, that there be no habitation for it. (Sheol h7585)

The cords of death compassed me, and the straits of the nether-world got hold upon me; I found trouble and sorrow. (Sheol h7585)

If I ascend up into heaven, Thou art there; if I make my bed in the nether-world, behold, Thou art there. (Sheol h7585)

As when one cleaveth and breaketh up the earth, our bones are scattered at the grave's mouth. (Sheol h7585)

Let us swallow them up alive as the grave, and whole, as those that go down into the pit; (Sheol h7585)

Her feet go down to death; her steps take hold on the nether-world; (Sheol h7585)

Her house is the way to the nether-world, going down to the chambers of death. (Sheol h7585)

But he knoweth not that the shades are there; that her guests are in the depths of the nether-world. (Sheol h7585)

The nether-world and Destruction are before the LORD; how much more then the hearts of the children of men! (Sheol h7585)

The path of life goeth upward for the wise, that he may depart from the nether-world beneath. (Sheol h7585)

Thou beatest him with the rod, and wilt deliver his soul from the nether-world. (Sheol h7585)

The nether-world and Destruction are never satiated; so the eyes of man are never satiated. (Sheol h7585)

The grave; and the barren womb; the earth that is not satisfied with water; and the fire that saith not: 'Enough.' (Sheol h7585)

Whatsoever thy hand attaineth to do by thy strength, that do; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest. (Sheol h7585)

Set me as a seal upon thy heart, as a seal upon thine arm; for love is strong as death, jealousy is cruel as the grave; the flashes thereof are flashes of fire, a very flame of the LORD. (Sheol h7585)

Therefore the nether-world hath enlarged her desire, and opened her mouth without measure; and down goeth their glory, and their tumult, and their uproar, and he that rejoiceth among them. (Sheol h7585)

'Ask thee a sign of the LORD thy God: ask it either in the depth, or in the height above.' (Sheol h7585)

The nether-world from beneath is moved for thee to meet thee at thy coming; the shades are stirred up for thee, even all the chief ones of the earth; all the kings of the nations are raised up from their thrones. (Sheol h7585)
| שאול מתחת רגזה לך--לקראת בואך עורר לך רפאים כל עתודי ארץ--הקים מכסאותם כל מלכי גוים (Sheol h7585) |
Thy pomp is brought down to the nether-world, and the noise of thy psalteries; the maggot is spread under thee, and the worms cover thee.' (Sheol h7585)
| הורד שאול גאונך המית נבליך תחתיך יצע רמה ומכסיך תולעה (Sheol h7585) |
Yet thou shalt be brought down to the nether-world, to the uttermost parts of the pit. (Sheol h7585)

Because ye have said: 'We have made a covenant with death, and with the nether-world are we at agreement; when the scouring scourge shall pass through, it shall not come unto us; for we have made lies our refuge, and in falsehood have we hid ourselves'; (Sheol h7585)

And your covenant with death shall be disannulled and your agreement with the nether-world shall not stand; when the scouring scourge shall pass through, then ye shall be trodden down by it, (Sheol h7585)

I said: In the noontide of my days I shall go, even to the gates of the nether-world; I am deprived of the residue of my years. (Sheol h7585)

For the nether-world cannot praise Thee, death cannot celebrate Thee; they that go down into the pit cannot hope for Thy truth. (Sheol h7585)

And thou wentest to the king with ointment, and didst increase thy perfumes, and didst send thine ambassadors far off, even down to the nether-world. (Sheol h7585)

Thus saith the Lord GOD: In the day when he went down to the nether-world I caused the deep to mourn and cover itself for him, and I restrained the rivers thereof, and the great waters were stayed; and I caused Lebanon to mourn for him, and all the trees of the field fainted for him. (Sheol h7585)

The strong among the mighty shall speak of him out of the midst of the nether-world with them that helped him; they are gone down, they lie still, even the uncircumcised, slain by the sword. (Sheol h7585)

And they that are inferior to the uncircumcised shall not lie with the mighty that are gone down to the nether-world with their weapons of war, whose swords are laid under their heads, and whose iniquities are upon their bones; because the terror of the mighty was in the land of the living. Shall I ransom them from the power of the nether-world? Shall I redeem them from death? Ho, thy plagues, O death! Ho, thy destruction, O nether-world! Repentance be hid from Mine eyes! (Sheol h7585)

Though they dig into the nether-world, thence shall My hand take them; and though they climb up to heaven, thence will I bring them down. (Sheol h7585)

And he said: I called out of mine affliction unto the LORD, and He answered me; out of the belly of the nether-world cried I, and Thou heardest my voice. (Sheol h7585)

Yea, moreover, wine is a treacherous dealer; the haughty man abideth not; he who enlargeth his desire as the nether-world, and is as death, and cannot be satisfied, but gathereth unto him all nations, and heapeth unto him all peoples. (Sheol h7585)
