Nehemiah 4

1 But it came to pass that, when Sanballat heard that we builded the wall, he was wroth, and took great indignation, and mocked the Jews.

Et lorsque Saneballat apprit que nous relevions les murs, il fut irrité et très chagrin, et il se moqua des Juifs.

2 And he spoke before his brethren and the army of Samaria, and said: 'What do these feeble Jews? will they restore at will? will they sacrifice? will they make an end this day? will they revive the stones out of the heaps of rubbish, seeing they are burned?'

Et il parla devant ses frères et les puissants de Samarie en ces termes: Que font les Juifs impuissants? les laissera-t-on faire? Sacrifieront-ils? achèveront-ils maintenant? feront-ils renaître les pierres du sein des décombres poudreux, quand elles sont brûlées?

3 Now Tobiah the Ammonite was by him, and he said: 'Even that which they build, if a fox go up, he shall break down their stone wall.'

Et Tobie, l'Ammonite, se tenait à ses côtés et dit: Aussi bien qu'est-ce qu'ils bâtissent? Quand un renard sauterait dessus, il ferait crouler leur mur de pierres! —

4 Hear, O our God; for we are despised; and turn back their reproach upon their own head, and give them up to spoiling in a land of captivity;

Entends, ô notre Dieu, que nous sommes méprisés, et fais retomber leurs outrages sur leur tête, et livre-les au pillage dans le pays de la captivité!

5 and cover not their iniquity, and let not their sin be blotted out from before Thee; for they have vexed Thee before the builders.

Ne couvre pas leur forfait, et que leur péché ne soit pas effacé devant toi, car ils t'ont provoqué en s'opposant aux réparateurs. —

6 So we built the wall; and all the wall was joined together unto half the height thereof; for the people had a mind to work.

Cependant nous relevâmes le mur, et tout le mur fut achevé jusqu'à la moitié; et le peuple avait cœur au travail.

7 But it came to pass that, when Sanballat, and Tobiah, and the Arabians, and the Ammonites, and the Ashdodites, heard that the repairing of the walls of Jerusalem went forward, and that the breaches began to be stopped, then they were very wroth;

Et lorsque Saneballat et Tobie et les Arabes et les Ammonites et les Asdodites apprirent que le mur de Jérusalem était remis en état et que les brèches commençaient à se fermer, ils en eurent une colère extrême.

8 and they conspired all of them together to come and fight against Jerusalem, and to cause confusion therein.

Et ils se liguèrent tous entre eux pour venir attaquer Jérusalem et lui porter dommage.

9 But we made our prayer unto our God, and set a watch against them day and night, because of them.

Alors nous priâmes notre Dieu, et nous fîmes le guet jour et nuit par précaution contre eux.

10 And Judah said: 'The strength of the bearers of burdens is decayed, and there is much rubbish; so that we are not able to build the wall.'

Mais Juda dit: La vigueur des porteurs cède, et il y a trop de décombres: nous ne pouvons plus travailler au mur!

11 And our adversaries said: 'They shall not know, neither see, till we come into the midst of them, and slay them, and cause the work to cease.'

Et nos adversaires avaient cette idée: il faut qu'ils ne se doutent, ne s'aperçoivent de rien, jusqu'à ce que nous soyons arrivés au milieu d'eux, et que nous les massacrions, et fassions cesser l'ouvrage.

12 And it came to pass that, when the Jews that dwelt by them came, they said unto us ten times: 'Ye must return unto us from all places.'

Et comme il vint des Juifs qui habitaient près d'eux, et qu'ils nous le répétèrent bien dix fois, de tous les lieux d'où ils allaient et venaient chez nous,

13 Therefore set I in the lowest parts of the space behind the wall, in the open places, I even set the people after their families with their swords, their spears, and their bows.

je posai des postes dans l'enfoncement à l'endroit qui est derrière le mur, dans les places exposées au soleil, et je postai le peuple par familles avec leurs épées, leurs lances et leurs arcs.

14 And I looked, and rose up, and said unto the nobles, and to the rulers, and to the rest of the people: 'Be not ye afraid of them; remember the Lord, who is great and awful, and fight for your brethren, your sons and your daughters, your wives and your houses.'

Et j'examinai, puis je me levai et dis aux nobles et aux chefs et au reste du peuple: N'ayez pas peur d'eux! Pensez au Seigneur, le Grand et le Redoutable, et combattez pour vos frères, vos fils et vos filles, vos femmes et vos maisons!

15 And it came to pass, when our enemies heard that it was known unto us, and God had brought their counsel to nought, that we returned all of us to the wall, every one unto his work.

Et lorsque nos ennemis apprirent que nous étions informés, par là Dieu déjoua leur plan, et nous retournâmes tous au mur, chacun à sa besogne.

16 And it came to pass from that time forth, that half of my servants wrought in the work, and half of them held the spears, the shields, and the bows, and the coats of mail; and the rulers were behind all the house of Judah.

Et à partir de ce jour, la moitié de mes écuyers travaillaient à l'ouvrage, et l'autre moitié restait sous les armes avec lances, boucliers, et arcs et cuirasses. Et les chefs se tenaient derrière toute la Maison de Juda.

17 They that builded the wall and they that bore burdens laded themselves, every one with one of his hands wrought in the work, and with the other held his weapon;

Ceux qui travaillaient au mur et ceux qui portaient et chargeaient les fardeaux, d'une main travaillaient à l'ouvrage et de l'autre tenaient leur armure.

18 and the builders, every one had his sword girded by his side, and so builded. And he that sounded the horn was by me.

Les constructeurs avaient chacun son épée ceinte autour de ses reins, et travaillaient. Et celui qui sonnait de la trompette, était à mes côtés.

19 And I said unto the nobles, and to the rulers and to the rest of the people: 'The work is great and large, and we are separated upon the wall, one far from another;

Et je dis aux nobles et aux chefs et au reste du peuple: L'ouvrage est considérable et étendu, et nous sommes épars sur les murs, l'un à distance de l'autre:

20 in what place soever ye hear the sound of the horn, resort ye thither unto us; our God will fight for us.'

au lieu donc d'où vous entendrez partir le son de la trompette, réunissez-vous-y à nous! Notre Dieu combattra pour nous.

21 So we wrought in the work; and half of them held the spears from the rising of the morning till the stars appeared.

Et c'est ainsi que nous travaillions à l'ouvrage; et une moitié des hommes tenaient la lance depuis le lever de l'aurore jusqu'à l'apparition des étoiles.

22 Likewise at the same time said I unto the people: 'Let every one with his servant lodge within Jerusalem, that in the night they may be a guard to us, and may labour in the day.'

Et dans le même temps je dis aussi au peuple: Que chacun avec son écuyer passe la nuit dans Jérusalem, et que la nuit il fasse le guet pour nous, et que le jour il soit à l'ouvrage.

23 So neither I, nor my brethren, nor my servants, nor the men of the guard that followed me, none of us put off our clothes, every one that went to the water had his weapon.

Ni moi, ni mes frères, ni mes écuyers, ni les hommes de la garde qui me suivaient, ne quittâmes nos habits; pour bain — chacun avait son armure.
