Judges 18

1 In those days there was no king in Israel; and in those days the tribe of the Danites sought them an inheritance to dwell in; for unto that day there had nothing been allotted unto them among the tribes of Israel for an inheritance.

En ce temps-là, Israël n’avait point de roi; et en ce même temps, la tribu des Danites se mettait en quête d’une possession pour s’y établir, car jusque-là elle n’avait pas obtenu en partage un territoire, comme les autres tribus d’Israël.

2 And the children of Dan sent of their family five men from their whole number, men of valour, from Zorah, and from Eshtaol, to spy out the land, and to search it; and they said unto them: 'Go, search the land'; and they came to the hill-country of Ephraim, unto the house of Micah, and lodged there.

Les Danites choisirent donc parmi eux cinq hommes de leur famille, hommes résolus, et les envoyèrent de Çorea et d’Echtaol pour parcourir et explorer le pays, en leur disant: "Allez, explorez le pays." Ceux-ci arrivèrent dans la montagne d’Ephraïm, près de la maison de Micah, et y passèrent la nuit.

3 When they were by the house of Micah, they knew the voice of the young man the Levite; and they turned aside thither, and said unto him: 'Who brought thee hither? and what doest thou in this place? and what hast thou here?'

Etant près de cette maison, ils reconnurent la voix du jeune lévite, le joignirent et lui dirent: "Qui t’a fait venir ici? que fais-tu céans, et qu’y possèdes-tu?"

4 And he said unto them: 'Thus and thus hath Micah dealt with me, and he hath hired me, and I am become his priest.'

Il leur répondit: "Micah a fait pour moi telle et telle chose; il m’a engagé moyennant salaire, et je suis devenu son prêtre."

5 And they said unto him: 'Ask counsel, we pray thee, of God, that we may know whether our way which we are going shall be prosperous.'

"De grâce, lui dirent-ils, consulte Dieu pour que nous sachions si l’entreprise que nous tentons réussira."

6 And the priest said unto them: 'Go in peace; before the LORD is your way wherein ye go.'

"Allez en paix, leur répondit le prêtre; l’Eternel voit d’un bon œil le voyage que vous faites."

7 Then the five men departed, and came to Laish, and saw the people that were therein, how they dwelt in security, after the manner of the Zidonians, quiet and secure; for there was none in the land, possessing authority, that might put them to shame in any thing, and they were far from the Zidonians, and had no dealings with any man.

Les cinq hommes se remirent en route et atteignirent Laïs. Ils virent que le peuple habitant cette ville vivait en sécurité à la manière des Sidoniens, paisible et confiant; que rien ne ferait obstacle, dans le pays, à qui s’emparerait du pouvoir; qu’ils étaient loin des Sidoniens et sans rapports avec personne.

8 And they came unto their brethren to Zorah and Eshtaol; and their brethren said unto them: 'What say ye?'

Et de retour chez leurs frères, à Çorea et à Echtaol, quand ceux-ci leur dirent: "Que savez-vous?"

9 And they said: 'Arise, and let us go up against them; for we have seen the land, and, behold, it is very good; and are ye still? be not slothful to go and to enter in to possess the land.

ils répondirent: "Venez et marchons contre eux! Nous avons observé ce pays, il est excellent, et vous restez inactifs! N’Hésitez pas à vous mettre en marche, allez conquérir ce pays!

10 When ye go, ye shall come unto a people secure, and the land is large; for God hath given it into your hand; a place where there is no want; it hath every thing that is in the earth.'

En y arrivant, vous arriverez chez un peuple plein de sécurité, dans un territoire spacieux, dont Dieu vous fait maîtres; une contrée où rien ne manque de ce que peut produire la terre."

11 And there set forth from thence of the family of the Danites, out of Zorah and out of Eshtaol, six hundred men girt with weapons of war.

Aussitôt partirent de là, de Çorea et d’Echtaol, six cents hommes de la famille des Danites, armés en guerre.

12 And they went up, and encamped in Kiriath-jearim, in Judah; wherefore that place was called Mahaneh-dan unto this day; behold, it is behind Kiriath-jearim.

Puis, avançant, ils campèrent près de Kiryath-Yearim en Juda; c’est pourquoi ce lieu, situé derrière Kiryath-Yearim, s’appelle aujourd’hui encore Mahané-Dan.

13 And they passed thence unto the hill-country of Ephraim, and came unto the house of Micah.

De là ils se dirigèrent vers la montagne d’Ephraïm, et arrivèrent jusqu’à la maison de Micah.

14 Then answered the five men that went to spy out the country of Laish, and said unto their brethren: 'Do ye know that there is in these houses an ephod, and teraphim, and a graven image, and a molten image? now therefore consider what ye have to do.'

Les cinq hommes qui étaient allés explorer le pays jusqu’à Laïs prirent la parole, et dirent à leurs frères: "Savez-vous qu’il y a, dans une de ces maisons, un éphod, des pénates et une image taillée avec métal? Avisez maintenant à ce que vous devez faire."

15 And they turned aside thither, and came to the house of the young man the Levite, even unto the house of Micah, and asked him of his welfare.

Ils se rendirent alors chez le jeune lévite, dans la demeure de Micah, et s’informèrent de son bien-être.

16 And the six hundred men girt with their weapons of war, who were of the children of Dan, stood by the entrance of the gate.

Tandis que les six cents hommes de la tribu de Dan, ceints de leurs armes, se tenaient au seuil de la porte,

17 And the five men that went to spy out the land went up, and came in thither, and took the graven image, and the ephod, and the teraphim, and the molten image; and the priest stood by the entrance of the gate with the six hundred men girt with weapons of war.

les cinq autres, les explorateurs du pays, pénétrèrent dans l’intérieur et enlevèrent l’idole, l’éphod, les pénates et la garniture métallique; le prêtre était arrêté au seuil de la porte, avec les six cents hommes armés,

18 And when these went into Micah's house, and fetched the graven image of the ephod, and the teraphim, and the molten image, the priest said unto them: 'What do ye?'

tandis que les autres entraient chez Micah et s’emparaient de l’idole jointe à l’éphod, des pénates et du métal. Et le prêtre leur dit: "Que faites-vous?"

19 And they said unto him: 'Hold thy peace, lay thy hand upon thy mouth, and go with us, and be to us a father and a priest; is it better for thee to be priest unto the house of one man, or to be priest unto a tribe and a family in Israel?'

"Tais-toi! répondirent-ils, retiens ta langue et viens avec nous pour nous servir de père et de prêtre. Lequel vaut mieux, que tu desserves la maison d’un particulier, ou bien une famille et une tribu d’Israël?"

20 And the priest's heart was glad, and he took the ephod, and the teraphim, and the graven image, and went in the midst of the people.

Le prêtre en fut charmé dans son cœur; il prit éphod, pénates et idole, et entra dans les rangs de cette troupe.

21 So they turned and departed, and put the little ones and the cattle and the goods before them.

Alors ils se remirent en voyage, en faisant prendre les devants à la population faible, aux bestiaux et aux bagages.

22 When they were a good way from the house of Micah, the men that were in the houses near to Micah's house were gathered together, and overtook the children of Dan.

Ils étaient déjà loin de la maison de Micah, lorsque les habitants des maisons qui avoisinaient celle de Micah s’ameutèrent, et se mirent à la poursuite des enfants de Dan.

23 And they cried unto the children of Dan. And they turned their faces, and said unto Micah: 'What aileth thee, that thou comest with such a company?'

Comme ils criaient après eux, ceux-ci se retournèrent et dirent à Micah: "Qu’as-tu donc, pour te mettre ainsi en campagne?"

24 And he said: 'Ye have taken away my god which I made, and the priest, and are gone away, and what have I more? and how then say ye unto me: What aileth thee?'

Il répondit: "Vous avez emporté les dieux que je m’étais faits, vous avez emmené mon prêtre, il ne me reste plus rien, et vous me demandez ce que j’ai!"

25 And the children of Dan said unto him: 'Let not thy voice be heard among us, lest angry fellows fall upon you, and thou lose thy life, with the lives of thy household.'

Les Danites lui répliquèrent: "Ne nous obsède pas de tes plaintes; car quelques-uns, d’un caractère aigri, pourraient se jeter sur vous, et tu causerais ta perte et celle de ta famille."

26 And the children of Dan went their way; and when Micah saw that they were too strong for him, he turned and went back unto his house.

Les Danites poursuivirent leur marche, tandis que Micah, voyant qu’ils étaient les plus forts, changeait de direction et rentrait chez lui.

27 And they took that which Micah had made, and the priest whom he had, and came unto Laish, unto a people quiet and secure, and smote them with the edge of the sword; and they burnt the city with fire.

Pour eux, ils gardèrent et les objets qu’avait faits Micah et le prêtre qu’il avait eu; ils tombèrent sur Laïs, sur une population paisible et confiante, la passèrent au fil de l’épée et mirent le feu à la ville.

28 And there was no deliverer, because it was far from Zidon, and they had no dealings with any man; and it was in the valley that lieth by Beth-rehob. And they built the city, and dwelt therein.

Nul ne la secourut, car elle était éloignée de Sidon et n’avait de relations avec personne; elle était située dans la vallée attenante à Beth-Rehob. Puis ils rebâtirent cette ville, s’y établirent,

29 And they called the name of the city Dan, after the name of Dan their father, who was born unto Israel; howbeit the name of the city was Laish at the first.

et la nommèrent Dan, du nom de Dan leur père, l’un des fils d’Israël; mais la ville, antérieurement, avait nom Laïs.

30 And the children of Dan set up for themselves the graven image; and Jonathan, the son of Gershom, the son of Manasseh, he and his sons were priests to the tribe of the Danites until the day of the captivity of the land.

Les enfants de Dan érigèrent l’idole à leur usage; et Jonathan, fils de Gersom, fils de Manassé, ainsi que ses descendants, servirent de prêtres à cette tribu jusqu’au jour où elle fut exilée du pays.

31 So they set them up Micah's graven image which he made, all the time that the house of God was in Shiloh.

Ils conservèrent donc l’idole fabriquée par Micah, tout le temps que la maison de Dieu resta à Silo.
