Joshua 4

1 And it came to pass, when all the nation were clean passed over the Jordan, that the LORD spoke unto Joshua, saying:

Et, quand ils eurent passé, le Seigneur dit à Josué:

2 'Take you twelve men out of the people, out of every tribe a man,

Choisis douze hommes, un de chaque tribu,

3 and command ye them, saying: Take you hence out of the midst of the Jordan, out of the place where the priests' feet stood, twelve stones made ready, and carry them over with you, and lay them down in the lodging-place, where ye shall lodge this night.'

Et ordonne-leur d’emporter du milieu du lit du Jourdain, où se sont arrêtés les pieds des prêtres, douze pierres très dures, que vous placerez dans l’endroit du camp où vous planterez cette nuit les tentes,

4 Then Joshua called the twelve men, whom he had prepared of the children of Israel, out of every tribe a man;

Josué appela donc les douze hommes qu’il avait choisis d’entre les enfants d’Israël, un de chaque tribu,

5 and Joshua said unto them: 'Pass on before the ark of the LORD your God into the midst of the Jordan, and take you up every man of you a stone upon his shoulder, according unto the number of the tribes of the children of Israel;

Et il leur dit: Allez devant l’arche du Seigneur votre Dieu, au milieu de Jourdain, et emportez de là chacun une pierre sur vos épaules, selon le nombre des enfants d’Israël,

6 that this may be a sign among you, that when your children ask in time to come, saying: What mean ye by these stones?

Afin que ce soit un signe parmi vous. Et quand vos fils vous interrogeront demain, disant: Que veulent dire ces pierres?

7 then ye shall say unto them: Because the waters of the Jordan were cut off before the ark of the covenant of the LORD; when it passed over the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan were cut off; and these stones shall be for a memorial unto the children of Israel for ever.'

Vous leur répondrez: Les eaux du Jourdain se sont dissipées devant l’arche de l’alliance du Seigneur, quand elle le passait, c’est pourquoi ces pierres ont été placées comme un monument des enfants d’Israël pour toujours.

8 And the children of Israel did so as Joshua commanded, and took up twelve stones out of the midst of the Jordan, as the LORD spoke unto Joshua, according to the number of the tribes of the children of Israel; and they carried them over with them unto the place where they lodged, and laid them down there.

Les enfants d’Israël firent donc comme ordonna Josué, portant du milieu du lit du Jourdain douze pierres, comme le Seigneur lui avait commandé, selon le nombre des enfants d’Israël, jusqu’au lieu dans lequel ils étaient campés; et c’est là qu’ils les placèrent.

9 Joshua also set up twelve stones in the midst of the Jordan, in the place where the feet of the priests that bore the ark of the covenant stood; and they are there unto this day.

Josué plaça aussi douze autres pierres au milieu du lit du Jourdain, où s’arrêtèrent les prêtres qui portaient l’arche de l’alliance; et elles sont là jusqu’au présent jour.

10 And the priests that bore the ark stood in the midst of the Jordan, until every thing was finished that the LORD commanded Joshua to speak unto the people, according to all that Moses commanded Joshua; and the people hastened and passed over.

Or, les prêtres qui portaient l’arche se tenaient au milieu du Jourdain, jusqu’à ce que fût accompli tout ce que le Seigneur avait ordonné à Josué d’annoncer au peuple, et que lui avait dit Moïse. Et le peuple se hâta et passa le fleuve.

11 And it came to pass, when all the people were clean passed over, that the ark of the LORD passed on, and the priests, before the people.

Et lorsque tous eurent passé, l’arche du Seigneur passa aussi, et les prêtres marchaient devant le peuple.

12 And the children of Reuben, and the children of Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh, passed on armed before the children of Israel, as Moses spoke unto them;

De plus, les enfants de Ruben et de Gad, et la demi-tribu de Manassé, armés, précédaient les enfants d’Israël, comme leur avait ordonné Moïse;

13 about forty thousand ready armed for war passed on in the presence of the LORD unto battle, to the plains of Jericho.

Et quarante mille combattants marchaient par bandes et par bataillons à travers les plaines et les campagnes de la ville de Jéricho.

14 On that day the LORD magnified Joshua in the sight of all Israel; and they feared him, as they feared Moses, all the days of his life.

En ce jour-là le Seigneur exalta Josué devant tout Israël, afin qu’ils le craignissent comme ils avaient craint Moïse pendant qu’il vivait.

15 And the LORD spoke unto Joshua, saying:

Et il lui dit:

16 'Command the priests that bear the ark of the testimony, that they come up out of the Jordan.'

Ordonne aux prêtres qui portent l’arche de l’alliance de monter du Jourdain.

17 Joshua therefore commanded the priests, saying: 'Come ye up out of the Jordan.'

Et il leur ordonna, disant: Montez du Jourdain.

18 And it came to pass, as the priests that bore the ark of the covenant of the LORD came up out of the midst of the Jordan, as soon as the soles of the priests' feet were drawn up unto the dry ground, that the waters of the Jordan returned unto their place, and went over all its banks, as aforetime.

Et lorsqu’ils furent montés, portant l’arche de l’alliance du Seigneur, et qu’ils eurent commencé à marcher sur la terre sèche, les eaux revinrent dans leur lit, et elles coulaient comme elles avaient coutume auparavant.

19 And the people came up out of the Jordan on the tenth day of the first month, and encamped in Gilgal, on the east border of Jericho.

Or, le peuple monta du Jourdain le dixième jour du premier mois, et ils campèrent à Galgala, vers le côté oriental de la ville de Jéricho.

20 And those twelve stones, which they took out of the Jordan, did Joshua set up in Gilgal.

Josué plaça aussi à Galgala les douze pierres qu’ils avaient prises dans le lit du Jourdain.

21 And he spoke unto the children of Israel, saying: 'When your children shall ask their fathers in time to come, saying: What mean these stones?

Et il dit aux enfants d’Israël: Quand vos fils interrogeront demain leurs pères, et leur diront: Que veulent dire ces pierres?

22 then ye shall let your children know, saying: Israel came over this Jordan on dry land.

Vous les instruirez et vous direz: C’est à travers son lit desséché qu’Israël a passé ce Jourdain.

23 For the LORD your God dried up the waters of Jordan from before you, until ye were passed over, as the LORD your God did to the Red Sea, which He dried up from before us, until we were passed over,

Le Seigneur votre Dieu ayant séché les eaux en votre présence jusqu’à ce que vous eussiez passé, Comme il avait fait auparavant à la mer Rouge, jusqu’à ce que nous eussions passé,

24 that all the peoples of the earth may know the hand of the LORD, that it is mighty; that ye may fear the LORD your God for ever.'

Afin que tous les peuples de la terre connaissent la main toute puissante du Seigneur, et que vous-mêmes vous craigniez aussi le Seigneur votre Dieu en tout temps.
