Jonah 3
1 And the word of the LORD came unto Jonah the second time, saying:
তারপর, সদাপ্রভুর বাণী দ্বিতীয়বার যোনার কাছে উপস্থিত হল:
2 'Arise, go unto Nineveh, that great city, and make unto it the proclamation that I bid thee.'
“তুমি মহানগরী নীনবীতে যাও ও আমি যে বার্তা তোমাকে দেব, তা গিয়ে তুমি ঘোষণা করো।”
3 So Jonah arose, and went unto Nineveh, according to the word of the LORD. Now Nineveh was an exceeding great city, of three days' journey.
যোনা সদাপ্রভুর কথার বাধ্য হয়ে নীনবীতে গেলেন। সেই সময়, নীনবী ছিল একটি অত্যন্ত বৃহৎ নগর যার এক প্রান্ত থেকে অন্য প্রান্তে যেতে তিন দিন সময় লাগত।
4 And Jonah began to enter into the city a day's journey, and he proclaimed, and said: 'Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown.'
যোনা নগরে প্রবেশ করে একদিনের পথ গেলেন এবং ঘোষণা করলেন, “আজ থেকে চল্লিশ দিন পার হলে নীনবী ধ্বংস হবে।”
5 And the people of Nineveh believed God; and they proclaimed a fast, and put on sackcloth, from the greatest of them even to the least of them.
নীনবীবাসীরা ঈশ্বরে বিশ্বাস করল। তারা উপবাস ঘোষণা করল এবং সকলে তাদের মহত্তম জন থেকে শুরু করে নগণ্যতম জন পর্যন্ত, প্রত্যেকে চট পরল।
6 And the tidings reached the king of Nineveh, and he arose from his throne, and laid his robe from him, and covered him with sackcloth, and sat in ashes.
যোনার সতর্কবাণী যখন নীনবীর রাজার কাছে পৌঁছাল, তিনি তার সিংহাসন থেকে উঠলেন, তার রাজকীয় পোশাক খুলে ফেলে চট পরলেন ও ভস্মের উপরে বসলেন।
7 And he caused it to be proclaimed and published through Nineveh by the decree of the king and his nobles, saying: 'Let neither man nor beast, herd nor flock, taste any thing; let them not feed, nor drink water;
রাজা নীনবীতে ঘোষণা করলেন: “রাজা ও তাঁর বিশিষ্ট ব্যক্তি সকলের আদেশ হল এই: “মানুষ অথবা পশু, গোপাল বা মেষপাল, কেউই যেন কোনও কিছুর স্বাদ গ্রহণ না করে; তারা যেন কেউ কিছু ভোজন বা পান না করে।
8 but let them be covered with sackcloth, both man and beast, and let them cry mightily unto God; yea, let them turn every one from his evil way, and from the violence that is in their hands.
কিন্তু মানুষ বা পশু, সকলকেই চট দিয়ে ঢেকে দেওয়া হোক। সকলেই আগ্রহভরে ঈশ্বরকে ডাকুক। তারা তাদের মন্দ আচরণ ও তাদের হিংস্রতা ত্যাগ করুক।
9 Who knoweth whether God will not turn and repent, and turn away from His fierce anger, that we perish not?'
কে জানে? ঈশ্বর হয়তো নরমচিত্ত হবেন এবং করুণাবিশিষ্ট হয়ে তাঁর প্রচণ্ড ক্রোধ থেকে মন পরিবর্তন করবেন, যেন আমরা বিনষ্ট না হই।”
10 And God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way; and God repented of the evil, which He said He would do unto them; and He did it not.
ঈশ্বর যখন দেখলেন যে তারা কী করেছে এবং কীভাবে তারা তাদের মন্দ আচরণ থেকে মন ফিরিয়েছে, ঈশ্বর মন পরিবর্তন করলেন এবং যে ধ্বংস করার ভয় তাদের দেখিয়েছিলেন তা করলেন না।
