Job 4
1 Then answered Eliphaz the Temanite, and said:
Und Eliphas, der Temaniter, antwortete und sprach:
2 If one venture a word unto thee, wilt thou be weary? But who can withhold himself from speaking?
Wenn man ein Wort an dich versucht, wird es dich verdrießen? Doch die Worte zurückzuhalten, wer vermöchte es?
3 Behold, thou hast instructed many, and thou hast strengthened the weak hands.
Siehe, du hast viele unterwiesen, [O. zurechtgeweisen] und erschlaffte Hände stärktest du;
4 Thy words have upholden him that was falling, and thou hast strengthened the feeble knees.
den Strauchelnden richteten deine Worte auf, und sinkende Knie hast du befestigt.
5 But now it is come upon thee, and thou art weary; it toucheth thee, and thou art affrighted.
Doch nun kommt es an dich, und es verdrießt dich; es erreicht dich, und du bist bestürzt.
6 Is not thy fear of God thy confidence, and thy hope the integrity of thy ways?
Ist nicht deine Gottesfurcht deine Zuversicht, die Vollkommenheit deiner Wege deine Hoffnung?
7 Remember, I pray thee, who ever perished, being innocent? Or where were the upright cut off?
Gedenke doch: Wer ist als Unschuldiger umgekommen, und wo sind Rechtschaffene vertilgt worden?
8 According as I have seen, they that plow iniquity, and sow mischief, reap the same.
So wie ich es gesehen habe: die Unheil pflügen und Mühsal säen, ernten es.
9 By the breath of God they perish, and by the blast of His anger are they consumed.
Durch den Odem Gottes kommen sie um, und durch den Hauch seiner Nase vergehen sie.
10 The lion roareth, and the fierce lion howleth — yet the teeth of the young lions are broken.
Das Brüllen des Löwen und des Brüllers Stimme sind verstummt, und die Zähne der jungen Löwen sind ausgebrochen;
11 The old lion perisheth for lack of prey, and the whelps of the lioness are scattered abroad.
der Löwe kommt um aus Mangel an Raub, und die Jungen der Löwin werden zerstreut. [Eig. zerstieben]
12 Now a word was secretly brought to me, and mine ear received a whisper thereof.
Und zu mir gelangte verstohlen ein Wort, und mein Ohr vernahm ein Geflüster davon.
13 In thoughts from the visions of the night, when deep sleep falleth on men,
In Gedanken, welche Nachtgesichte hervorrufen, wenn tiefer Schlaf die Menschen befällt,
14 Fear came upon me, and trembling, and all my bones were made to shake.
kam Schauer über mich und Beben, und durchschauerte alle meine Gebeine;
15 Then a spirit passed before my face, that made the hair of my flesh to stand up.
und ein Geist [O. ein Hauch] zog vor meinem Angesicht vorüber, das Haar meines Leibes starrte empor.
16 It stood still, but I could not discern the appearance thereof; a form was before mine eyes; I heard a still voice:
Es stand da, und ich erkannte sein Aussehen nicht; ein Bild war vor meinen Augen, ein Säuseln und eine Stimme hörte ich:
17 'Shall mortal man be just before God? Shall a man be pure before his Maker?
Sollte ein Mensch gerechter sein als Gott, oder ein Mann reiner als der ihn gemacht hat?
18 Behold, He putteth no trust in His servants, and His angels He chargeth with folly;
Siehe, auf seine Knechte vertraut er nicht, und seinen Engeln legt er Irrtum [And. l.: Torheit] zur Last:
19 How much more them that dwell in houses of clay, whose foundation is in the dust, who are crushed before the moth!
wieviel mehr denen, die in Lehmhäusern wohnen, deren Grund im Staube ist! Wie Motten werden sie zertreten.
20 Betwixt morning and evening they are shattered; they perish for ever without any regarding it.
Von Morgen bis Abend [d. h. in sehr kurzer Zeit] werden sie zerschmettert; ohne daß mans beachtet, kommen sie um auf ewig.
21 Is not their tent-cord plucked up within them? They die, and that without wisdom.'
Ist es nicht so? wird ihr Zeltstrick an ihnen weggerissen, [Der Mensch wird hier mit einem Zelte verglichen, welches durch Stricke und Pflöcke befestigt wird] so sterben sie, und nicht in Weisheit.
