Job 37
1 At this also my heart trembleth, and is moved out of its place.
Ja, hierover siddert mijn hart, En springt op van zijn plaats.
2 Hear attentively the noise of His voice, and the sound that goeth out of His mouth.
Hoort, hoort het bulderen van zijn stem, Het gebrom, dat komt uit zijn mond.
3 He sendeth it forth under the whole heaven, and His lightning unto the ends of the earth.
Langs heel de hemel slingert Hij zijn bliksem, En tot de grenzen der aarde.
4 After it a voice roareth; He thundereth with the voice of His majesty; and He stayeth them not when His voice is heard.
Zijn stem gromt achter Hem aan, Hij dondert met zijn machtige kreet; Hij houdt de bliksem niet terug, Wanneer zijn stem zich laat horen.
5 God thundereth marvellously with His voice; great things doeth He, which we cannot comprehend.
Maar ook wonderen wrocht God door zijn stem, Doet grote, onbegrijpelijke dingen!
6 For He saith to the snow: 'Fall thou on the earth'; likewise to the shower of rain, and to the showers of His mighty rain.
Hij spreekt tot de sneeuw: Val op aarde neer; Tot de regenstromen: Weest hevig!
7 He sealeth up the hand of every man, that all men whom He hath made may know it.
Dan sluit Hij alle mensen op, Opdat ieder sterveling zijn werk erkent;
8 Then the beasts go into coverts, and remain in their dens.
Ook de dieren zoeken hun schuilplaats op, En leggen zich neer in hun holen.
9 Out of the Chamber cometh the storm; and cold out of the north.
Uit zijn kamer komt de wervelwind, Uit zijn voorraadschuren de koude;
10 By the breath of God ice is given, and the breadth of the waters is straitened.
Door de adem Gods wordt het ijs gestolten, De watervlakte in boeien gelegd;
11 Yea, He ladeth the thick cloud with moister, He spreadeth abroad the cloud of His lightning;
Het zwerk belaadt Hij met dampen, En spreidt zijn lichtende wolken uit.
12 And they are turned round about by His guidance, that they may do whatsoever He commandeth them upon the face of the habitable world:
Ze zweven naar alle kanten rond, En gaan, zoals Hij het beschikt, Om te volbrengen, wat Hij hun gebiedt, Op de oppervlakte der aarde:
13 Whether it be for correction, or for His earth, or for mercy, that He cause it to come.
Is het tot straf, ze volbrengen zijn wil; Is het tot zegen, ze voeren hem uit.
14 Hearken unto this, O Job; stand still, and consider the wondrous works of God.
Job, schenk er uw aandacht aan, Houd op, en let op Gods wonderen!
15 Dost thou know how God enjoineth them, and causeth the lightning of His cloud to shine?
Begrijpt ge, hoe God ze gebiedt, En het licht van zijn wolken doet flitsen;
16 Dost thou know the balancings of the clouds, the wondrous works of Him who is perfect in knowledge?
Begrijpt ge iets van het zweven der wolken, Van de wonderwerken van den Alwetende?
17 Thou whose garments are warm, when the earth is still by reason of the south wind;
Gij, wiens kleren te warm zijn, Als de aarde amechtig van de zuidenwind ligt:
18 Canst thou with Him spread out the sky, which is strong as a molten mirror?
Kunt gij, evenals Hij, het zwerk tot een uitspansel strijken, Vast als een spiegel van gegoten metaal?
19 Teach us what we shall say unto Him; for we cannot order our speech by reason of darkness.
Laat mij weten, wat wij Hem zullen zeggen, Wij, die door de duisternis hulpeloos staan!
20 Shall it be told Him that I would speak? Or should a man wish that he were swallowed up?
Zal deze wijken wanneer ik het zeg; Worden weggevaagd, als de mens het beveelt?
21 And now men see not the light which is bright in the skies; but the wind passeth, and cleanseth them.
Neen, thans aanschouwt men geen licht, Het is door de wolken verduisterd; Maar een wind steekt op, en bezemt ze weg:
22 Out of the north cometh golden splendour, about God is terrible majesty.
En uit het Noorden breekt de goudglans door! God is van ontzagwekkende luister omringd:
23 The Almighty, whom we cannot find out, is excellent in power, yet to judgment and plenteous justice He doeth no violence.
Wij dringen dus niet tot den Almachtige door! Hij is groot in kracht en gerechtigheid; Hij is de Heer van het recht, die nimmer verdrukt!
24 Men do therefore fear Him; He regardeth not any that are wise of heart.
Daarom moeten de mensen Hem vrezen, Doorgronden Hem al de wijzen niet!
