Job 29
1 And Job again took up his parable, and said:
Giobbe continuò a pronunziare le sue sentenze e disse:
2 Oh that I were as in the months of old, as in the days when God watched over me;
Oh, potessi tornare com'ero ai mesi di un tempo, ai giorni in cui Dio mi proteggeva,
3 When His lamp shined above my head, and by His light I walked through darkness;
quando brillava la sua lucerna sopra il mio capo e alla sua luce camminavo in mezzo alle tenebre;
4 As I was in the days of my youth, when the converse of God was upon my tent;
com'ero ai giorni del mio autunno, quando Dio proteggeva la mia tenda,
5 When the Almighty was yet with me, and my children were about me;
quando l'Onnipotente era ancora con me e i giovani mi stavano attorno;
6 When my steps were washed with butter, and the rock poured me out rivers of oil!
quando mi lavavo in piedi nel latte e la roccia mi versava ruscelli d'olio!
7 When I went forth to the gate unto the city, when I prepared my seat in the broad place,
Quando uscivo verso la porta della città e sulla piazza ponevo il mio seggio:
8 The young men saw me and hid themselves, and the aged rose up and stood;
vedendomi, i giovani si ritiravano e i vecchi si alzavano in piedi;
9 The princes refrained talking, and laid their hand on their mouth;
i notabili sospendevano i discorsi e si mettevan la mano sulla bocca;
10 The voice of the nobles was hushed, and their tongue cleaved to the roof of their mouth.
la voce dei capi si smorzava e la loro lingua restava fissa al palato;
11 For when the ear heard me, then it blessed me, and when the eye saw me, it gave witness unto me;
con gli orecchi ascoltavano e mi dicevano felice, con gli occhi vedevano e mi rendevano testimonianza,
12 Because I delivered the poor that cried, the fatherless also, that had none to help him.
perché soccorrevo il povero che chiedeva aiuto, l'orfano che ne era privo.
13 The blessing of him that was ready to perish came upon me; and I caused the widow's heart to sing for joy.
La benedizione del morente scendeva su di me e al cuore della vedova infondevo la gioia.
14 I put on righteousness, and it clothed itself with me; my justice was as a robe and a diadem.
Mi ero rivestito di giustizia come di un vestimento; come mantello e turbante era la mia equità.
15 I was eyes to the blind, and feet was I to the lame.
Io ero gli occhi per il cieco, ero i piedi per lo zoppo.
16 I was a father to the needy; and the cause of him that I knew not I searched out.
Padre io ero per i poveri ed esaminavo la causa dello sconosciuto;
17 And I broke the jaws of the unrighteous, and plucked the prey out of his teeth.
rompevo la mascella al perverso e dai suoi denti strappavo la preda.
18 Then I said: 'I shall die with my nest, and I shall multiply my days as the phoenix;
Pensavo: «Spirerò nel mio nido e moltiplicherò come sabbia i miei giorni».
19 My root shall be spread out to the waters, and the dew shall lie all night upon my branch;
La mia radice avrà adito alle acque e la rugiada cadrà di notte sul mio ramo.
20 My glory shall be fresh in me, and my bow shall be renewed in my hand.'
La mia gloria sarà sempre nuova e il mio arco si rinforzerà nella mia mano.
21 Unto me men gave ear, and waited, and kept silence for my counsel.
Mi ascoltavano in attesa fiduciosa e tacevano per udire il mio consiglio.
22 After my words they spoke not again; and my speech dropped upon them.
Dopo le mie parole non replicavano e su di loro scendevano goccia a goccia i miei detti.
23 And they waited for me as for the rain; and they opened their mouth wide as for the latter rain.
Mi attendevano come si attende la pioggia e aprivano la bocca come ad acqua primaverile.
24 If I laughed on them, they believed it not; and the light of my countenance they cast not down.
Se a loro sorridevo, non osavano crederlo, né turbavano la serenità del mio volto.
25 I chose out their way, and sat as chief, and dwelt as a king in the army, as one that comforteth the mourners.
Indicavo loro la via da seguire e sedevo come capo, e vi rimanevo come un re fra i soldati o come un consolatore d'afflitti.
