Job 15
1 Then answered Eliphaz the Temanite, and said:
そこでテマンびとエリパズは答えて言った、
2 Should a wise man make answer with windy knowledge, and fill his belly with the east wind?
「知者はむなしき知識をもって答えるであろうか。東風をもってその腹を満たすであろうか。
3 Should he reason with unprofitable talk, or with speeches wherewith he can do no good?
役に立たない談話をもって論じるであろうか。無益な言葉をもって争うであろうか。
4 Yea, thou doest away with fear, and impairest devotion before God.
ところがあなたは神を恐れることを捨て、神の前に祈る事をやめている。
5 For thine iniquity teacheth thy mouth, and thou choosest the tongue of the crafty.
あなたの罪はあなたの口を教え、あなたは悪賢い人の舌を選び用いる。
6 Thine own mouth condemneth thee, and not I; yea, thine own lips testify against thee.
あなたの口みずからあなたの罪を定める、わたしではない。あなたのくちびるがあなたに逆らって証明する。
7 Art thou the first man that was born? Or wast thou brought forth before the hills?
あなたは最初に生れた人であるのか。山よりも先に生れたのか。
8 Dost thou hearken in the council of God? And dost thou restrain wisdom to thyself?
あなたは神の会議にあずかったのか。あなたは知恵を独占しているのか。
9 What knowest thou, that we know not? What understandest thou, which is not in us?
あなたが知るものはわれわれも知るではないか。あなたが悟るものはわれわれも悟るではないか。
10 With us are both the gray-headed and the very aged men, much older than thy father.
われわれの中にはしらがの人も、年老いた人もあって、あなたの父よりも年上だ。
11 Are the consolations of God too small for thee, and the word that dealeth gently with thee?
神の慰めおよびあなたに対するやさしい言葉も、あなたにとって、あまりに小さいというのか。
12 Why doth thy heart carry thee away? And why do thine eyes wink?
どうしてあなたの心は狂うのか。どうしてあなたの目はしばたたくのか。
13 That thou turnest thy spirit against God, and lettest such words go out of thy mouth.
あなたが神にむかって気をいらだて、このような言葉をあなたの口から出すのはなぜか。
14 What is man, that he should be clean? And he that is born of a woman, that he should be righteous?
人はいかなる者か、どうしてこれは清くありえよう。女から生れた者は、どうして正しくありえよう。
15 Behold, He putteth no trust in His holy ones; yea, the heavens are not clean in His sight.
見よ、神はその聖なる者にすら信を置かれない、もろもろの天も彼の目には清くない。
16 How much less one that is abominable and impure, man who drinketh iniquity like water!
まして憎むべき汚れた者、また不義を水のように飲む人においては。
17 I will tell thee, hear thou me; and that which I have seen I will declare —
わたしはあなたに語ろう、聞くがよい。わたしは自分の見た事を述べよう。
18 Which wise men have told from their fathers, and have not hid it;
これは知者たちがその先祖からうけて、隠す所なく語り伝えたものである。
19 Unto whom alone the land was given, and no stranger passed among them.
彼らにのみこの地は授けられて、他国人はその中に行き来したことがなかった。
20 The wicked man travaileth with pain all his days, even the number of years that are laid up for the oppressor.
悪しき人は一生の間、もだえ苦しむ。残酷な人には年の数が定められている。
21 A sound of terrors is in his ears: in prosperity the destroyer shall come upon him.
その耳には恐ろしい音が聞え、繁栄の時にも滅ぼす者が彼に臨む。
22 He believeth not that he shall return out of darkness, and he is waited for of the sword.
彼は、暗やみから帰りうるとは信ぜず、つるぎにねらわれる。
23 He wandereth abroad for bread: 'Where is it?' He knoweth that the day of darkness is ready at his hand.
彼は食物はどこにあるかと言いつつさまよい、暗き日が手近に備えられてあるのを知る。
24 Distress and anguish overwhelm him; they prevail against him, as a king ready to the battle.
悩みと苦しみとが彼を恐れさせ、戦いの備えをした王のように彼に打ち勝つ。
25 Because he hath stretched out his hand against God, and behaveth himself proudly against the Almighty;
これは彼が神に逆らってその手を伸べ、全能者に逆らって高慢にふるまい、
26 He runneth upon him with a stiff neck, with the thick bosses of his bucklers.
盾の厚い面をもって強情に、彼にはせ向かうからだ。
27 Because he hath covered his face with his fatness, and made collops of fat on his loins;
また彼は脂肪をもってその顔をおおい、その腰には脂肪の肉を集め、
28 And he hath dwelt in desolate cities, in houses which no man would inhabit, which were ready to become heaps.
滅ぼされた町々に住み、人の住まない家、荒塚となる所におるからだ。
29 He shall not be rich, neither shall his substance continue, neither shall their produce bend to the earth.
彼は富める者とならず、その富はながく続かない、また地に根を張ることはない。
30 He shall not depart out of darkness; the flame shall dry up his branches, and by the breath of His mouth shall he go away.
彼は暗やみからのがれることができない。炎はその若枝を枯らし、その花は風に吹き去られる。
31 Let him not trust in vanity, deceiving himself; for vanity shall be his recompense.
彼をしてみずから欺いて、むなしい事にたよらせてはならない。その報いはむなしいからだ。
32 It shall be accomplished before his time, and his branch shall not be leafy.
彼の時のこない前にその事がなし遂げられ、彼の枝は緑とならないであろう。
33 He shall shake off his unripe grape as the vine, and shall cast off his flower as the olive.
彼はぶどうの木のように、その熟さない実をふり落すであろう。またオリブの木のように、その花を落すであろう。
34 For the company of the godless shall be desolate, and fire shall consume the tents of bribery.
神を信じない者のやからは子なく、まいないによる天幕は火で焼き滅ぼされるからだ。
35 They conceive mischief, and bring forth iniquity, and their belly prepareth deceit.
彼らは害悪をはらみ、不義を生み、その腹は偽りをつくる」。
