Job 14
1 Man that is born of a woman is of few days, and full of trouble.
L’Homme, né de la femme, n’a que peu de jours à vivre, et il est rassasié de troubles.
2 He cometh forth like a flower, and withereth; he fleeth also as a shadow, and continueth not.
Comme la fleur, il pousse et se flétrit; il fuit comme l’ombre et n’a point de durée.
3 And dost Thou open Thine eyes upon such a one, and bringest me into judgment with Thee?
Et c’est sur cet être que tu as les yeux ouverts! Moi-même, tu me forces à comparaître en justice avec toi!
4 Who can bring a clean thing out of an unclean? not one.
Qui donc pourrait tirer quelque chose de pur de ce qui est impur? Pas un!
5 Seeing his days are determined, the number of his months is with Thee, and Thou hast appointed his bounds that he cannot pass;
Puisque ses jours sont mesurés, que tu connais le compte de ses mois, et que tu lui as imposé des limites qu’il ne saurait dépasser,
6 Look away from him, that he may rest, till he shall accomplish, as a hireling, his day.
détourne ton attention de lui: qu’il ait un peu de répit pendant qu’il remplit sa journée comme un mercenaire!
7 For there is hope of a tree, if it be cut down, that it will sprout again, and that the tender branch thereof will not cease.
Car pour l’arbre, il est encore de l’espoir; si on le coupe il peut repousser, les rejetons ne lui manquent pas.
8 Though the root thereof wax old in the earth, and the stock thereof die in the ground;
Dût sa racine vieillir dans la terre et son tronc mourir dans le sol,
9 Yet through the scent of water it will bud, and put forth boughs like a plant.
il suffit qu’il sente l’eau pour reverdir et produire un branchage, comme s’il était nouvellement planté.
10 But man dieth, and lieth low; yea, man perisheth, and where is he?
Mais l’homme meurt et s’évanouit, le mortel expire: où est-il alors?
11 As the waters fail from the sea, and the river is drained dry;
Les eaux s’échappent du fond du lac, le fleuve tarit et se dessèche.
12 So man lieth down and riseth not; till the heavens be no more, they shall not awake, nor be roused out of their sleep.
De même, les humains se couchent pour ne plus se relever; tant que dureront les cieux, ils ne se réveilleront ni ne secoueront leur sommeil.
13 Oh that Thou wouldest hide me in the nether-world, that Thou wouldest keep me secret, until Thy wrath be past, that Thou wouldest appoint me a set time, and remember me! — (Sheol h7585)
Ah! Qu’il te plaise de m’enfermer dans le Cheol, de me mettre à l’abri jusqu’à ce que ta colère soit passée, de me fixer un terme où tu te ressouviendrais de moi! (Sheol h7585)
14 If a man die, may he live again? All the days of my service would I wait, till my relief should come —
Lorsque l’homme meurt, revivra-t-il? S’Il en était ainsi, tout le long de ma pénible corvée, je nourrirais de l’espoir, jusqu’à ce qu’on vienne me relever de ma faction.
15 Thou wouldest call, and I would answer Thee; Thou wouldest have a desire to the work of Thy hands.
Tu m’appellerais et moi je répondrais; tu témoignerais de l’affection pour l’œuvre de tes mains.
16 But now Thou numberest my steps, Thou dost not even wait for my sin;
Au lieu de compter comme à présent chacun de mes pas, tu cesserais de surveiller mes fautes.
17 My transgression is sealed up in a bag, and Thou heapest up mine iniquity.
Mes péchés sont scellés dans un faisceau; tu as mis ton cachet sur mes manquements.
18 And surely the mountain falling crumbleth away, and the rock is removed out of its place;
Or, une montagne qui s’écroule se réduit en poussière, et le rocher est déraciné de sa base.
19 The waters wear the stones; the overflowings thereof wash away the dust of the earth; so Thou destroyest the hope of man.
Les eaux finissent par user les pierres; leurs flots entraînent la poussière du sol: de même, tu ruines l’espoir de l’homme.
20 Thou prevailest for ever against him, and he passeth; Thou changest his countenance, and sendest him away.
Tu l’empoignes à jamais et il disparaît; tu déformes sa • figure et le rejettes.
21 His sons come to honour, and he knoweth it not; and they are brought low, but he regardeth them not.
Que ses enfants s’élèvent, il n’en sait rien; qu’ils soient abaissés, il n’en a pas connaissance.
22 But his flesh grieveth for him, and his soul mourneth over him.
Mais c’est pour lui seul que sa chair souffre; c’est pour lui seul que son âme est en deuil.
