Jeremiah 9
1 Oh that my head were waters, and mine eyes a fountain of tears, that I might weep day and night for the slain of the daughter of my people!
Qui changera ma tête en eaux, et mes yeux en source de larmes, pour que je pleure nuit et jour les morts de la fille de mon peuple?
2 Oh that I were in the wilderness, in a lodging-place of wayfaring men, that I might leave my people, and go from them! For they are all adulterers, an assembly of treacherous men.
Qui me donnera au désert un abri de voyageurs? J’abandonnerai mon peuple, je me retirerai d’avec eux! Car ils sont tous des adultères; une assemblée d’infidèles.
3 And they bend their tongue, their bow of falsehood; and they are grown mighty in the land, but not for truth; for they proceed from evil to evil, and Me they know not, saith the LORD.
Ils bandent leur langue comme leur arc, pour décocher le mensonge; ce n’est pas par la vérité qu’ils sont puissants dans le pays, car ils vont de péché en péché; et ils ne me connaissent pas, — oracle de Yahweh.
4 Take ye heed every one of his neighbour, and trust ye not in any brother; for every brother acteth subtly, and every neighbour goeth about with slanders.
Gardez vous chacun de votre ami, et ne vous fiez à aucun frère; car tout frère ne fait que supplanter, et tout ami s’en va répandant la calomnie.
5 And they deceive every one his neighbour, and truth they speak not; they have taught their tongue to speak lies, they weary themselves to commit iniquity.
Ils se dupent dupent l’un l’autre; ils ne disent pas la vérité; ils exercent leur langue à mentir; ils s’étudient à mal faire.
6 Thy habitation is in the midst of deceit; through deceit they refuse to know Me, saith the LORD.
Tu habites au milieu de la mauvaise foi; c’est par mauvaise foi qu’ils refusent de me connaître, — oracle de Yahweh.
7 Therefore thus saith the LORD of hosts: Behold, I will smelt them, and try them; for how else should I do, because of the daughter of My people?
C’est pourquoi ainsi parle Yahweh des armées: Je vais les fondre au creuset et les éprouver; car que faire autre chose avec la fille de mon peuple?
8 Their tongue is a sharpened arrow, it speaketh deceit; one speaketh peaceably to his neighbour with his mouth, but in his heart he layeth wait for him.
C’est un dard meurtrier que leur langue; elle ne profère que mensonge; de la bouche on dit: Paix à son prochain, et dans le cœur on lui dresse des embûches.
9 Shall I not punish them for these things? saith the LORD; Shall not My soul be avenged on such a nation as this?
Et je ne les punirais pas pour tous ces crimes, — oracle de Yahweh, et d’une nation telle que celle-là je ne me vengerais pas!
10 For the mountains will I take up a weeping and wailing, and for the pastures of the wilderness a lamentation, because they are burned up, so that none passeth through. And they hear not the voice of the cattle; both the fowl of the heavens and the beast are fled, and gone.
Sur les montagnes je ferai entendre une plainte et une lamentation, sur les pâturages du désert un chant de deuil! Car ils sont brûlés au point que personne n’y passe; on n’y entend plus la voix des troupeaux; depuis l’oiseau du ciel jusqu’au bétail, tous ont fui, ont disparu.
11 And I will make Jerusalem heaps, a lair of jackals; and I will make the cities of Judah a desolation, without an inhabitant.
Et je ferai de Jérusalem des tas de pierres, un repaire de chacals; et je ferai des villes de Juda une solitude, où personne n’habite.
12 Who is the wise man, that he may understand this? And who is he to whom the mouth of the LORD hath spoken, that he may declare it? Wherefore is the land perished and laid waste like a wilderness, so that none passeth through?
Quel est l’homme sage qui comprendra ces choses; celui à qui la bouche de Yahweh a parlé, pour qu’il les annonce? Pourquoi le pays est-il détruit, brûlé comme le désert où personne ne passe?
13 And the LORD saith: Because they have forsaken My law which I set before them, and have not hearkened to My voice, neither walked therein;
Et Yahweh dit: C’est parce qu’ils ont abandonné ma loi, que j’avais mise devant eux, qu’ils n’ont pas écouté ma voix et ne l’ont pas suivie.
14 But have walked after the stubbornness of their own heart, and after the Baalim, which their fathers taught them.
Mais ils ont marché selon l’obstination de leur cœur, et après les Baals, que leurs pères leur ont enseignés.
15 Therefore thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: Behold, I will feed them, even this people, with wormwood, and give them water of gall to drink.
C’est pourquoi ainsi parle Yahweh, le Dieu d’Israël: « Voici que je vais les nourrir d’absinthe, — ce peuple — et je leur donnerai à boire des eaux empoisonnées.
16 I will scatter them also among the nations, whom neither they nor their fathers have known; and I will send the sword after them, till I have consumed them.
Je les disperserai parmi des nations que n’ont connues ni eux, ni leurs pères, et j’enverrai contre eux le glaive, jusqu’à ce que je les aie exterminés.
17 Thus saith the LORD of hosts: Consider ye, and call for the mourning women, that they may come; and send for the wise women, that they may come;
Ainsi parle Yahweh des armées: Pensez à commander les pleureuses, et qu’elles viennent! Envoyez vers les plus habiles, et qu’elles viennent!
18 And let them make haste, and take up a wailing for us, that our eyes may run down with tears, and our eyelids gush out with waters.
Qu’elles se hâtent, qu’elles entonnent sur nous des lamentations; que les larmes coulent de nos yeux, et que de nos paupières les pleurs ruissellent!
19 For a voice of wailing is heard out of Zion: 'How are we undone! We are greatly confounded, because we have forsaken the land, because our dwellings have cast us out.'
Car un bruit de lamentations a été entendu dans Sion: « Comment sommes-nous dévastés, couverts de honte, au point d’abandonner le pays, parce qu’on a jeté bas nos demeures? »
20 Yea, hear the word of the LORD, O ye women, and let your ear receive the word of His mouth, and teach your daughters wailing, and every one her neighbour lamentation:
Femmes, écoutez donc la parole de Yahweh, et que votre oreille reçoive la parole de sa bouche! Enseignez à vos filles une lamentation, et chacune à vos compagnes un chant de deuil.
21 'For death is come up into our windows, it is entered into our palaces, to cut off the children from the street, and the young men from the broad places. —
Car la mort est montée par nos fenêtres, et elle est entrée dans nos palais, pour faire disparaître l’enfant de la rue, et les jeunes gens des places publiques.
22 Speak: Thus saith the LORD — And the carcasses of men fall as dung upon the open field, and as the handful after the harvestman, which none gathereth.'
Parle: Ainsi... — oracle de Yahweh: Le cadavre de l’homme tombera, comme du fumier sur un champ, et comme la javelle derrière le moissonneur, sans que personne la ramasse.
23 Thus saith the LORD: Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, neither let the mighty man glory in his might, let not the rich man glory in his riches;
Ainsi parle Yahweh: Que le sage ne se glorifie pas de sa sagesse; que le fort ne se glorifie pas de sa force; que le riche ne se glorifie pas de sa richesse.
24 But let him that glorieth glory in this, that he understandeth, and knoweth Me, that I am the LORD who exercise mercy, justice, and righteousness, in the earth; for in these things I delight, saith the LORD.
Mais que celui qui se glorifie se glorifie en ceci: d’avoir de l’intelligence et de me connaître. Car je suis Yahweh, qui exerce la miséricorde, le droit et la justice sur la terre; car c’est à cela que je prends plaisir, — oracle de Yahweh.
25 Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will punish all them that are circumcised in their uncircumcision:
Voici que des jours viennent, — oracle de Yahweh, où je châtierai tout circoncis avec l’incirconcis:
26 Egypt, and Judah, and Edom, and the children of Ammon, and Moab, and all that have the corners of their hair polled, that dwell in the wilderness; for all the nations are uncircumcised, but all the house of Israel are uncircumcised in the heart.
L’Égypte, Juda, Edom, les fils d’Ammon, Moab, et tous ceux qui se rasent les tempes, qui habitent le désert; car toutes les nations sont incirconcises, et toute la maison d’Israël est incirconcise de cœur.
