Jeremiah 7
1 The word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD, saying:
La parole qui fut adressée à Jérémie de la part de Yahweh, en ces termes:
2 Stand in the gate of the LORD'S house, and proclaim there this word, and say: Hear the word of the LORD, all ye of Judah, that enter in at these gates to worship the LORD.
« Tiens-toi à la porte de la maison de Yahweh, et là prononce cette parole et dis: Ecoutez la parole de Yahweh, vous tous, hommes de Juda, qui entrez par ces portes pour adorer Yahweh.
3 Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: Amend your ways and your doings, and I will cause you to dwell in this place.
Ainsi parle Yahweh des armées, le Dieu d’Israël: Améliorez vos voies et vos œuvres, et je vous ferai habiter dans ce lieu.
4 Trust ye not in lying words, saying: 'The temple of the LORD, the temple of the LORD, the temple of the LORD, are these.'
Ne vous fiez pas aux paroles de mensonge de ceux qui disent: « C’est ici le temple de Yahweh, le temple de Yahweh, le temple de Yahweh! »
5 Nay, but if ye thoroughly amend your ways and your doings; if ye thoroughly execute justice between a man and his neighbour;
Mais si vous améliorez vos voies et vos œuvres, si vous rendez fidèlement la justice entre un homme et son prochain;
6 if ye oppress not the stranger, the fatherless, and the widow, and shed not innocent blood in this place, neither walk after other gods to your hurt;
Si vous n’opprimez pas l’étranger, l’orphelin et la veuve, si vous ne répandez pas en ce lieu le sang innocent, et si vous n’allez pas près d’autres dieux, pour votre malheur:
7 then will I cause you to dwell in this place, in the land that I gave to your fathers, for ever and ever.
Alors je vous ferai habiter dans ce lieu, au pays que j’ai donné à vos pères, depuis les temps anciens et pour jamais.
8 Behold, ye trust in lying words, that cannot profit.
Mais voici que vous vous fiez à des paroles de mensonge, qui ne vous servent de rien!
9 Will ye steal, murder, and commit adultery, and swear falsely, and offer unto Baal, and walk after other gods whom ye have not known,
Quoi! voler, tuer, commettre l’adultère, jurer faussement, encenser Baal et aller après d’autres dieux que, vous ne connaissez pas!...
10 and come and stand before Me in this house, whereupon My name is called, and say: 'We are delivered', that ye may do all these abominations?
Et vous venez, vous vous présentez devant moi, dans cette maison sur laquelle mon nom est invoqué, et vous dites: « Nous échapperons! » Et c’est afin de commettre toutes ces abominations!
11 Is this house, whereupon My name is called, become a den of robbers in your eyes? Behold, I, even I, have seen it, saith the LORD.
Est-ce donc à vos yeux une caverne de brigands, que cette maison sur laquelle mon nom est invoqué? Moi aussi, je l’ai vu, — oracle de Yahweh.
12 For go ye now unto My place which was in Shiloh, where I caused My name to dwell at the first, and see what I did to it for the wickedness of My people Israel.
Allez donc à ma demeure qui était à Silo, où j’avais fait autrefois habiter mon nom, et voyez comment je l’ai traitée, à cause de la méchanceté de mon peuple d’Israël.
13 And now, because ye have done all these works, saith the LORD, and I spoke unto you, speaking betimes and often, but ye heard not, and I called you, but ye answered not;
Et maintenant, puisque vous avez fait toutes ces actions, — oracle de Yahweh, et que je vous ai parlé, vous parlant dès le matin, et vous n’avez pas écouté, et que je vous ai appelés, et vous n’avez pas répondu,
14 therefore will I do unto the house, whereupon My name is called, wherein ye trust, and unto the place which I gave to you and to your fathers, as I have done to Shiloh.
je ferai de cette maison, sur laquelle mon nom a été invoqué, dans laquelle vous mettez votre confiance, et de ce lieu que j’ai donné à vous et à vos pères, ce que j’ai fait de Silo;
15 And I will cast you out of My sight, as I have cast out all your brethren, even the whole seed of Ephraim.
et je vous rejetterai de devant moi, comme j’ai rejeté tous vos frères, toute la race d’Ephraïm.
16 Therefore pray not thou for this people, neither lift up cry nor prayer for them, neither make intercession to Me; for I will not hear thee.
Et toi, n’intercède pas en faveur de ce peuple; n’élève pour lui ni plainte ni prière, et n’insiste pas auprès de moi, car je ne t’écouterai pas.
17 Seest thou not what they do in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem?
Ne vois-tu pas, ce qu’ils font dans les villes de Juda, et dans les rues de Jérusalem?
18 The children gather wood, and the fathers kindle the fire, and the women knead the dough, to make cakes to the queen of heaven, and to pour out drink-offerings unto other gods, that they may provoke Me.
Les fils ramassent du bois, les pères allument le feu, les femmes pétrissent de la pâte pour faire des gâteaux à la reine du ciel, et répandre des libations à d’autres dieux, afin de m’offenser.
19 Do they provoke Me? saith the LORD; do they not provoke themselves, to the confusion of their own faces?
Est-ce moi qu’ils offensent, — oracle de Yahweh, n’est-ce pas eux-mêmes, à la honte de leur visage?
20 Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD: Behold, Mine anger and My fury shall be poured out upon this place, upon man, and upon beast, and upon the trees of the field, and upon the fruit of the land; and it shall burn, and shall not be quenched.
C’est pourquoi ainsi parle le Seigneur Yahweh: Voici que ma colère et ma fureur vont se répandre sur ce lieu, sur les hommes et sur les bêtes, sur l’arbre des champs et sur le fruit du sol; elle brûlera et ne s’éteindra point.
21 Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: Add your burnt-offerings unto your sacrifices, and eat ye flesh.
Ainsi parle Yahweh des armées, Dieu d’Israël: Ajoutez vos holocaustes à vos sacrifices, et mangez-en la chair;
22 For I spoke not unto your fathers, nor commanded them in the day that I brought them out of the land of Egypt, concerning burnt-offerings or sacrifices;
car je n’ai pas parlé à vos pères ni ne leur ai rien prescrit, le jour où je les ai fait sortir du pays d’Égypte, en matière d’holocaustes et de sacrifices.
23 but this thing I commanded them, saying: 'Hearken unto My voice, and I will be your God, and ye shall be My people; and walk ye in all the way that I command you, that it may be well with you.'
Mais quant au commandement que je leur ai donné, je leur ai dit: Ecoutez ma voix, et je serai votre Dieu, et vous serez mon peuple; marchez dans toutes les voies que je vous prescrirai, afin que vous soyez heureux.
24 But they hearkened not, nor inclined their ear, but walked in their own counsels, even in the stubbornness of their evil heart, and went backward and not forward,
Mais ils n’ont pas écouté, et ils n’ont pas prêté l’oreille et ils ont marché selon leurs conseils, selon l’endurcissement de leur mauvais cœur; ils sont allés en arrière, et non en avant.
25 even since the day that your fathers came forth out of the land of Egypt unto this day; and though I have sent unto you all My servants the prophets, sending them daily betimes and often,
Depuis le jour où vos pères sont sortis de la terre d’Égypte jusqu’à ce jour, je vous ai envoyé tous mes serviteurs les prophètes, les envoyant chaque jour dès le matin;
26 yet they hearkened not unto Me, nor inclined their ear, but made their neck stiff; they did worse than their fathers.
mais ils ne m’ont pas écouté, ils n’ont pas prêté l’oreille; ils ont raidi leur cou, ils ont fait pis que leurs pères.
27 And thou shalt speak all these words unto them, but they will not hearken to thee; thou shalt also call unto them, but they will not answer thee.
Tu leur diras toutes ces choses, ils ne t’écouteront pas; tu les appelleras, ils ne te répondront pas.
28 Therefore thou shalt say unto them: This is the nation that hath not hearkened to the voice of the LORD their God, nor received correction; faithfulness is perished, and is cut off from their mouth.
Alors tu leur diras: C’est la nation qui n’a pas écouté la voix de Yahweh, son Dieu, et qui n’a pas accepté l’instruction; la fidélité a péri; elle a disparu de sa bouche.
29 Cut off thy hair, and cast it away, and take up a lamentation on the high hills; for the LORD hath rejected and forsaken the generation of His wrath.
Rase ta chevelure, et jette-la; et entonne sur les hauteurs un chant de deuil, car Yahweh a pris en dédain et rejeté la race objet de sa colère.
30 For the children of Judah have done that which is evil in My sight, saith the LORD; they have set their detestable things in the house whereon My name is called, to defile it.
Car les fils de Juda ont fait ce qui est mal à mes yeux, — oracle de Yahweh; ils ont placé leurs abominations dans la maison sur laquelle mon nom a été invoqué, afin de la souiller;
31 And they have built the high places of Topheth, which is in the valley of the son of Hinnom, to burn their sons and their daughters in the fire; which I commanded not, neither came it into My mind.
et ils ont construit les hauts lieux de Topheth dans la vallée du fils de Hinnom, pour brûler au feu leurs fils et leurs filles, ce que je n’avais pas commandé, et ce qui ne m’était pas venu à la pensée.
32 Therefore, behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that it shall no more be called Topheth, nor The valley of the son of Hinnom, but The valley of slaughter; for they shall bury in Topheth, for lack of room.
C’est pourquoi voici que des jours viennent, — oracle de Yahweh, où l’on ne dira plus « Topheth, » ni « Vallée du fils de Hinnom », mais « Vallée du massacre », et où l’on enterrera à Topheth, faute de place.
33 And the carcasses of this people shall be food for the fowls of the heaven, and for the beasts of the earth; and none shall frighten them away.
Et les cadavres de ce peuple seront la pâture des oiseaux du ciel et des bêtes de la terre, sans qu’il y ait personne pour les chasser.
34 Then will I cause to cease from the cities of Judah, and from the streets of Jerusalem, the voice of mirth and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom and the voice of the bride; for the land shall be desolate.
Et je ferai cesser, dans les villes de Juda et dans les rues de Jérusalem, les cris de réjouissance et les cris d’allégresse, le chant de l’époux et le chant de l’épouse, car le pays sera devenu un désert.
