Jeremiah 10
1 Hear ye the word which the LORD speaketh unto you, O house of Israel;
Écoutez la parole que l'Éternel vous adresse, maison d'Israël!
2 thus saith the LORD: Learn not the way of the nations, and be not dismayed at the signs of heaven; for the nations are dismayed at them.
Yahvé dit, « N'apprenez pas la voie des nations, et ne soyez pas consternés par les signes du ciel; car les nations sont consternées par eux.
3 For the customs of the peoples are vanity; for it is but a tree which one cutteth out of the forest, the work of the hands of the workman with the axe.
Car les coutumes des peuples ne sont que vanité; car on coupe un arbre de la forêt, le travail des mains de l'ouvrier à la hache.
4 They deck it with silver and with gold, they fasten it with nails and with hammers, that it move not.
Ils le décorent d'argent et d'or. Ils le fixent avec des clous et avec des marteaux, pour qu'il ne puisse pas bouger.
5 They are like a pillar in a garden of cucumbers, and speak not; they must needs be borne, because they cannot go. Be not afraid of them, for they cannot do evil, neither is it in them to do good.
Ils sont comme un palmier, dont le travail est tourné, et ne parle pas. Ils doivent être portés, parce qu'ils ne peuvent pas bouger. N'ayez pas peur d'eux; car ils ne peuvent pas faire le mal, il n'est pas en eux de faire le bien. »
6 There is none like unto Thee, O LORD; Thou art great, and Thy name is great in might.
Il n'y a personne comme toi, Yahvé. Tu es génial, et ton nom est grand en puissance.
7 Who would not fear Thee, O king of the nations? For it befitteth Thee; forasmuch as among all the wise men of the nations, and in all their royalty, there is none like unto Thee.
qui ne devraient pas vous craindre, Roi des nations? Car il vous appartient. Parce que parmi tous les sages des nations, et dans tout leur domaine royal, il n'y a personne comme toi.
8 But they are altogether brutish and foolish: the vanities by which they are instructed are but a stock;
Mais ils sont tous ensemble brutaux et stupides, instruits par les idoles! C'est juste du bois.
9 Silver beaten into plates which is brought from Tarshish, and gold from Uphaz, the work of the craftsman and of the hands of the goldsmith; blue and purple is their clothing; they are all the work of skilful men.
Il y a de l'argent battu en plaques, qu'on apporte de Tarsis, et l'or d'Uphaz, le travail du graveur et des mains de l'orfèvre. Leurs vêtements sont bleus et violets. Ils sont tous l'œuvre d'hommes habiles.
10 But the LORD God is the true God, He is the living God, and the everlasting King; at His wrath the earth trembleth, and the nations are not able to abide His indignation.
Mais Yahvé est le vrai Dieu. Il est le Dieu vivant, et un Roi éternel. A sa colère, la terre tremble. Les nations ne sont pas capables de résister à son indignation.
11 Thus shall ye say unto them: 'The gods that have not made the heavens and the earth, these shall perish from the earth, and from under the heavens.'
« Tu leur diras ceci: « Les dieux qui n'ont pas fait les cieux et la terre disparaîtront de la terre et de sous les cieux. »
12 He that hath made the earth by His power, that hath established the world by His wisdom, and hath stretched out the heavens by His understanding;
Dieu a fait la terre par sa puissance. Il a établi le monde par sa sagesse, et c'est par son intelligence qu'il a déployé les cieux.
13 At the sound of His giving a multitude of waters in the heavens, when He causeth the vapours to ascend from the ends of the earth; when He maketh lightnings with the rain, and bringeth forth the wind out of His treasuries;
Quand il fait entendre sa voix, les eaux dans les cieux rugissent, et il fait monter les vapeurs des extrémités de la terre. Il fait des éclairs pour la pluie, et fait sortir le vent de ses trésors.
14 Every man is proved to be brutish, without knowledge, every goldsmith is put to shame by the graven image, his molten image is falsehood, and there is no breath in them.
Tout homme est devenu brutal et sans connaissance. Tout orfèvre est déçu par son image gravée; car son image en fusion n'est que mensonge, et il n'y a pas de souffle en eux.
15 They are vanity, a work of delusion; in the time of their visitation they shall perish.
Ils sont une vanité, une œuvre d'égarement. Au moment de leur visite, ils périront.
16 Not like these is the portion of Jacob; for He is the former of all things, and Israel is the tribe of His inheritance; the LORD of hosts is His name.
La part de Jacob n'est pas comme celles-ci; car il est le créateur de toutes choses; et Israël est la tribu de son héritage. Yahvé des Armées est son nom.
17 Gather up thy wares from the ground, O thou that abidest in the siege.
Rassemblez vos marchandises dans le pays, vous qui vivez en état de siège.
18 For thus saith the LORD: Behold, I will sling out the inhabitants of the land at this time, and will distress them, that they may feel it.
Car Yahvé dit, « Voici qu'en ce moment, je vais frapper les habitants du pays, et les affligera, afin qu'ils le ressentent. »
19 Woe is me for my hurt! My wound is grievous; but I said: 'This is but a sickness, and I must bear it.'
Malheur à moi, à cause de ma blessure! Ma blessure est grave; mais j'ai dit, « En vérité, c'est mon chagrin, et je dois le supporter. »
20 My tent is spoiled, and all my cords are broken; my children are gone forth of me, and they are not; there is none to stretch forth my tent any more, and to set up my curtains.
Ma tente a été détruite, et tous mes liens sont rompus. Mes enfants se sont éloignés de moi, et ils ne sont plus. Il n'y a plus personne pour étendre ma tente, pour installer mes rideaux.
21 For the shepherds are become brutish, and have not inquired of the LORD; therefore they have not prospered, and all their flocks are scattered.
Car les bergers sont devenus brutaux, et n'ont pas demandé l'avis de Yahvé. C'est pourquoi ils n'ont pas prospéré, et tous leurs troupeaux se sont dispersés.
22 Hark! a report, behold, it cometh, and a great commotion out of the north country, to make the cities of Judah desolate, a dwelling-place of jackals.
La voix de la nouvelle, la voici, elle vient, et une grande agitation venant du pays du nord, pour faire des villes de Juda une désolation, un lieu de résidence pour les chacals.
23 O LORD, I know that man's way is not his own; it is not in man to direct his steps as he walketh.
Yahvé, je sais que la voie de l'homme n'est pas en lui-même. Il n'appartient pas à l'homme qui marche de diriger ses pas.
24 O LORD, correct me, but in measure; not in Thine anger, lest Thou diminish me.
Yahvé, corrige-moi, mais doucement; pas dans votre colère, de peur que tu ne me réduises à néant.
25 Pour out Thy wrath upon the nations that know Thee not, and upon the families that call not on Thy name; for they have devoured Jacob, yea, they have devoured him and consumed him, and have laid waste his habitation.
Répands ta colère sur les nations qui ne te connaissent pas, et sur les familles qui n'invoquent pas ton nom; car ils ont dévoré Jacob. Oui, ils l'ont dévoré, consumé, et ont détruit sa maison.
