Isaiah 49
1 Listen, O isles, unto me, and hearken, ye peoples, from far: the LORD hath called me from the womb, from the bowels of my mother hath He made mention of my name;
Ecoutez, îles, et soyez attentifs, peuples éloignés: le Seigneur dès le sein m’a appelé, dès les entrailles de ma mère il s’est souvenu de mon nom.
2 And He hath made my mouth like a sharp sword, in the shadow of His hand hath He hid me; and He hath made me a polished shaft, in His quiver hath He concealed me;
Il a disposé ma bouche comme un glaive aigu; à l’ombre de sa main il m’a protégé, et il m’a disposé comme une flèche choisie; il m’a caché dans son carquois.
3 And He said unto me: 'Thou art My servant, Israel, in whom I will be glorified.'
Et il m’a dit: Mon serviteur, c’est toi, Israël, parce qu’en toi je me glorifierai.
4 But I said: 'I have laboured in vain, I have spent my strength for nought and vanity; yet surely my right is with the LORD, and my recompense with my God.'
Et moi j’ai dit: C’est dans le vide que j’ai travaillé, c’est sans motif et vainement que j’ai consumé ma force; ainsi mon jugement est au pouvoir du Seigneur, et mon travail au pouvoir de Dieu.
5 And now saith the LORD that formed me from the womb to be His servant, to bring Jacob back to Him, and that Israel be gathered unto Him — for I am honourable in the eyes of the LORD, and my God is become my strength —
Et maintenant, dit le Seigneur, qui m’a formé dès le sein de ma mère pour le servir, afin que je ramène Jacob à lui, et Israël ne sera pas rassemblé, et j’ai été glorifié aux yeux du Seigneur, et mon Dieu est devenu ma force.
6 Yea, He saith: 'It is too light a thing that thou shouldest be My servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob, and to restore the offspring of Israel; I will also give thee for a light of the nations, that My salvation may be unto the end of the earth.'
Il a donc dit: C’est peu que tu me serves à relever les tribus de Jacob, et à convertir les restes d’Israël. Voici que je t’ai posé en lumière des nations, afin que tu sois mon salut jusqu’à l’extrémité de la terre.
7 Thus saith the LORD, the Redeemer of Israel, his Holy One, to him who is despised of men, to him who is abhorred of nations, to a servant of rulers: Kings shall see and arise, princes, and they shall prostrate themselves; because of the LORD that is faithful, even the Holy One of Israel, who hath chosen thee.
Voici ce que dit le Seigneur, le rédempteur d’Israël, son saint, à une âme méprisable, à une nation détestée, à l’esclave de ceux qui le dominent: Les rois te verront, et les princes se lèveront, et ils l’adoreront à cause du Seigneur, parce qu’il est fidèle, et à cause du saint d’Israël qui t’a choisi.
8 Thus saith the LORD: In an acceptable time have I answered thee, and in a day of salvation have I helped thee; and I will preserve thee, and give thee for a covenant of the people, to raise up the land, to cause to inherit the desolate heritages;
Voici ce que dit le Seigneur: En un temps favorable je t’ai exaucé, et en un jour de salut je t’ai secouru, je t’ai conservé, et je t’ai établi pour faire alliance avec un peuple, afin que tu rétablisses une terre, et que tu possèdes des héritages dissipés;
9 Saying to the prisoners: 'Go forth'; to them that are in darkness: 'Show yourselves'; they shall feed in the ways, and in all high hills shall be their pasture;
Afin que tu dises à ceux qui étaient dans les fers: Sortez; et à ceux qui étaient dans les ténèbres: Venez à la lumière. Sur les chemins, ils trouveront à paître, et dans toutes les plaines seront leurs pâturages.
10 They shall not hunger nor thirst, neither shall the heat nor sun smite them; for He that hath compassion on them will lead them, even by the springs of water will He guide them.
Ils n’auront pas faim, ni soif; la chaleur ne les atteindra pas, ni le soleil; parce que celui qui a pitié d’eux les conduira, et à des sources d’eaux il les fera boire.
11 And I will make all My mountains a way, and My highways shall be raised on high.
Et je disposerai toutes mes montagnes en une voie, et mes sentiers seront élevés.
12 Behold, these shall come from far; and, lo, these from the north and from the west, and these from the land of Sinim.
Voici que ceux-ci viendront de loin, et voici que ceux-là viendront de l’aquilon et de la mer, et ceux-ci de la terre du midi.
13 Sing, O heavens, and be joyful, O earth, and break forth into singing, O mountains; for the LORD hath comforted His people, and hath compassion upon His afflicted.
Louez, cieux; exulte, terre; montagnes, faites retentir la louange, parce que le Seigneur a consolé son peuple, et qu’il aura pitié de ses pauvres.
14 But Zion said: 'The LORD hath forsaken me, and the Lord hath forgotten me.'
Et Sion a dit: Le Seigneur m’a abandonnée, et le Seigneur m’a oubliée.
15 Can a woman forget her sucking child, that she should not have compassion on the son of her womb? Yea, these may forget, yet will not I forget thee.
Est-ce qu’une mère peut oublier son enfant, de sorte qu’elle n’ait pas pitié du fils de son sein? mais quand même elle l’oublierait, pour moi, je ne l’oublierai point.
16 Behold, I have graven thee upon the palms of My hands; thy walls are continually before Me.
Voici que je t’ai gravée dans mes mains; tes murs sont devant mes yeux sans cesse.
17 Thy children make haste; thy destroyers and they that made thee waste shall go forth from thee.
Ils sont venus, tes constructeurs; ceux qui te détruisaient et te dissipaient, sortiront de ton enceinte.
18 Lift up thine eyes round about, and behold: all these gather themselves together, and come to thee. As I live, saith the LORD, thou shalt surely clothe thee with them all as with an ornament, and gird thyself with them, like a bride.
Lève tes yeux tout autour et vois; tous ceux-ci se sont rassemblés, et ils sont venus à toi, Je vis, moi, dit le Seigneur: de tous ceux-ci, comme d’un ornement, tu seras revêtue, et tu t’en pareras comme une épouse.
19 For thy waste and thy desolate places and thy land that hath been destroyed — surely now shalt thou be too strait for the inhabitants, and they that swallowed thee up shall be far away.
Tes déserts et tes solitudes, et ta terre ruinée seront maintenant étroits eu égard aux habitants, et ils seront mis en fuite au loin, ceux qui te dévoraient.
20 The children of thy bereavement shall yet say in thine ears: 'The place is too strait for me; give place to me that I may dwell.'
Ils te diront encore à tes oreilles, les fils de ta stérilité: Le lieu est étroit; fais-moi de l’espace, afin que j’habite.
21 Then shalt thou say in thy heart: 'Who hath begotten me these, seeing I have been bereaved of my children, and am solitary, an exile, and wandering to and fro? And who hath brought up these? Behold, I was left alone; these, where were they?'
Et tu diras dans ton cœur: Qui m’a engendré ceux-ci? j’étais stérile, et je n’enfantais pas; exilée et captive; et ceux-ci, qui les a nourris? j’étais abandonnée et seule, et ceux-ci, où étaient-ils?
22 Thus saith the Lord GOD: Behold, I will lift up My hand to the nations, and set up Mine ensign to the peoples, and they shall bring thy sons in their bosom, and thy daughters shall be carried upon their shoulders.
Voici ce que dit le Seigneur Dieu: Voici que vers des nations j’élèverai ma main, et devant des peuples je hausserai mon étendard; et ils apporteront tes fils entre leurs bras, et tes filles, ils les porteront sur leurs épaules.
23 And kings shall be thy foster-fathers, and their queens thy nursing mothers; they shall bow down to thee with their face to the earth, and lick the dust of thy feet; and thou shalt know that I am the LORD, for they shall not be ashamed that wait for Me.
Et les rois seront tes nourriciers, et les reines tes nourrices; la face contre terre, ils se prosterneront devant toi, et ils lécheront la poussière de tes pieds. Et tu sauras que je suis le Seigneur, dans lequel ne seront pas confondus ceux qui l’attendent.
24 Shall the prey be taken from the mighty, or the captives of the victorious be delivered?
Est-ce qu’on ôtera à un homme fort sa proie? ou ce qui a été pris par un homme robuste, pourra-t-il être sauvé?
25 But thus saith the LORD: Even the captives of the mighty shall be taken away, and the prey of the terrible shall be delivered; and I will contend with him that contendeth with thee, and I will save thy children.
Parce que voici ce que dit le Seigneur: Certainement et les captifs seront ôtés à un homme fort, et ce qui aura été enlevé par un homme robuste sera sauvé. Or ceux qui t’ont jugée, moi je les jugerai, et tes fils, moi je les sauverai.
26 And I will feed them that oppress thee with their own flesh; and they shall be drunken with their own blood, as with sweet wine; and all flesh shall know that I the LORD am thy Saviour, and thy Redeemer, the Mighty One of Jacob.
Et je nourrirai tes ennemis de leurs propres chairs, et comme d’un vin nouveau je les enivrerai de leur sang; et toute chair saura que c’est moi le Seigneur qui te sauve, et que ton rédempteur est le fort de Jacob.
