Isaiah 21

1 The burden of the wilderness of the sea. As whirlwinds in the South sweeping on, it cometh from the wilderness, from a dreadful land.

Oracolo contro il deserto marittimo. Come gli uragani del mezzodì quando si scatenano, ei viene dal deserto, da un paese spaventoso.

2 A grievous vision is declared unto me: 'The treacherous dealer dealeth treacherously, and the spoiler spoileth. Go up, O Elam! besiege, O Media! All the sighing thereof have I made to cease.'

Una visione terribile m’è stata data: “Il perfido agisce con perfidia, il devastatore devasta. Sali, o Elam! Metti l’assedio o Media! Io fo cessare ogni gemito”.

3 Therefore are my loins filled with convulsion; pangs have taken hold upon me, as the pangs of a woman in travail; I am bent so that I cannot hear; I am affrighted so that I cannot see.

Perciò i miei fianchi son pieni si dolori; delle doglie m’han còlto, pari alle doglie d’una donna di parto; io mi contorco, per quel che sento; sono spaventato da quel che vedo.

4 My heart is bewildered, terror hath overwhelmed me; the twilight that I longed for hath been turned for me into trembling.

Il mio cuore si smarrisce, il terrore s’impossessa di me; la sera, alla quale anelavo, è diventato per me uno spavento.

5 They prepare the table, they light the lamps, they eat, they drink — 'Rise up, ye princes, anoint the shield.'

Si prepara la mensa, veglian le guardie, si mangia, si beve… “In piedi, o capi! ungete lo scudo!”

6 For thus hath the Lord said unto me: Go, set a watchman; let him declare what he seeth!

Poiché così m’ha parlato il Signore: “Va, metti una sentinella; ch’essa annunzi quel che vedrà!”

7 And when he seeth a troop, horsemen by pairs, a troop of asses, a troop of camels, he shall hearken diligently with much heed.

Essa vide della cavalleria, de’ cavalieri a due a due, della truppa a dorso d’asini, della truppa a dorso di cammelli; e quella ascoltava, ascoltava attentamente.

8 And he cried as a lion: 'Upon the watch-tower, O Lord, I stand continually in the daytime, and I am set in my ward all the nights.'

Poi gridò come un leone: “O Signore, di giorni io sto del continuo sulla torre di vedetta, e tutte le notti sono in piè nel mio posto di guardia.

9 And, behold, there came a troop of men, horsemen by pairs. And he spoke and said: 'Fallen, fallen is Babylon; and all the graven images of her gods are broken unto the ground.'

Ed ecco venir della cavalleria, dei cavalieri a due a due”. E quella riprese a dire: “Caduta, caduta è Babilonia! e tutte le immagini scolpite de’ suoi dèi giaccion frantumate al suolo”.

10 O thou my threshing, and the winnowing of my floor, that which I have heard from the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, have I declared unto you.

O popolo mio, che ti sei trebbiato come il grano della mia aia, ciò che ho udito dall’Eterno degli eserciti, dall’Iddio d’Israele, io te l’ho annunziato!

11 The burden of Dumah. One calleth unto me out of Seir: 'Watchman, what of the night? Watchman, what of the night?'

Oracolo contro Duma. Mi si grida da Seir: “Sentinella, a che punto è la notte? Sentinella, a che punto è la notte?”

12 The watchman said: 'The morning cometh, and also the night — if ye will inquire, inquire ye; return, come.'

La sentinella risponde: “Vien la mattina, e vien anche la notte. Se volete interrogare, interrogate pure; tornate un’altra volta”.

13 The burden upon Arabia. In the thickets in Arabia shall ye lodge, O ye caravans of Dedanites.

Oracolo contro l’Arabia. Passerete la notte nelle foreste, in Arabia, o carovane dei Dedaniti!

14 Unto him that is thirsty bring ye water! The inhabitants of the land of Tema did meet the fugitive with his bread.

Venite incontro all’assetato con dell’acqua, o abitanti del paese di Tema; recate del pane ai fuggiaschi.

15 For they fled away from the swords, from the drawn sword, and from the bent bow, and from the grievousness of war.

Poich’essi fuggon dinanzi alle spade, dinanzi alla spada snudata, dinanzi all’arco teso, dinanzi al furor della battaglia.

16 For thus hath the Lord said unto me: 'Within a year, according to the years of a hireling, and all the glory of Kedar shall fail;

Poiché così m’ha parlato il Signore: “Fra un anno, contato come quello d’un mercenario, tutta la gloria di Kedar sarà venuta meno,

17 and the residue of the number of the archers, the mighty men of the children of Kedar, shall be diminished; for the LORD, the God of Israel, hath spoken it.'

e ciò che resterà del numero dei valorosi arcieri di Kedar sarà poca cosa; poiché l’Eterno, l’Iddio d’Israele, l’ha detto”.
