Genesis 23
1 And the life of Sarah was a hundred and seven and twenty years; these were the years of the life of Sarah.
Or, la vie de Sarra atteignit cent vingt-sept ans.
2 And Sarah died in Kiriatharba — the same is Hebron — in the land of Canaan; and Abraham came to mourn for Sarah, and to weep for her.
Et Sarra mourut en la ville d'Arboc, dans la vallée (c'est aujourd'hui Hébron, en la terre de Chanaan). Abraham y vint pour pleurer Sarra et mener grand deuil.
3 And Abraham rose up from before his dead, and spoke unto the children of Heth, saying:
Ensuite Abraham partit d'auprès de sa morte, et il parla aux fils de Het, disant:
4 'I am a stranger and a sojourner with you: give me a possession of a burying-place with you, that I may bury my dead out of my sight.'
Je suis parmi vous passager et voyageur; accordez-moi donc l'achat d'un sépulcre parmi vous, et, me séparant de ma morte, je l'ensevelirai.
5 And the children of Heth answered Abraham, saying unto him:
Les fils de Het répondirent à Abraham, disant:
6 'Hear us, my lord: thou art a mighty prince among us; in the choice of our sepulchres bury thy dead; none of us shall withhold from thee his sepulchre, but that thou mayest bury thy dead.'
Non, Seigneur, écoute-nous: Tu es parmi nous un roi suscité de Dieu; ensevelis ta morte en nos sépulcres d'élite; nul de nous ne refusera de te céder son propre sépulcre pour que tu l'y ensevelisses.
7 And Abraham rose up, and bowed down to the people of the land, even to the children of Heth.
Et, s'étant levé, Abraham se prosterna devant les fils de Het, peuple de cette terre,
8 And he spoke with them, saying: 'If it be your mind that I should bury my dead out of my sight, hear me, and entreat for me to Ephron the son of Zohar,
En disant: Si votre cœur consent que j'ensevelisse ici ma morte que je ne verrai plus, écoutez-moi, et parlez en ma faveur à Éphron, fils de Saar,
9 that he may give me the cave of Machpelah, which he hath, which is in the end of his field; for the full price let him give it to me in the midst of you for a possession of a burying-place.'
Pour qu'il me donne la double caverne qui lui appartient, celle qui fait partie de son champ; qu'il me la cède à prix d'argent, pour être ma sépulture au milieu de vous.
10 Now Ephron was sitting in the midst of the children of Heth; and Ephron the Hittite answered Abraham in the hearing of the children of Heth, even of all that went in at the gate of his city, saying:
Or, Éphron était assis parmi les fils de Het; et répondant à Abraham, l'Hettéen, Éphron parla, les fils de Het l'entendant, ainsi que tous ceux qui entraient dans la ville, et il dit:
11 'Nay, my lord, hear me: the field give I thee, and the cave that is therein, I give it thee; in the presence of the sons of my people give I it thee; bury thy dead.'
Viens près de moi, Seigneur, et écoute-moi: Le champ et la caverne qu'il contient, je te les donne; je te les donne en présence de tous mes concitoyens; ensevelis ta morte.
12 And Abraham bowed down before the people of the land.
Abraham se prosterna devant le peuple de cette terre;
13 And he spoke unto Ephron in the hearing of the people of the land, saying: 'But if thou wilt, I pray thee, hear me: I will give the price of the field; take it of me, and I will bury my dead there.'
Et il dit à Éphron, en présence du peuple de cette terre: Puisque tu m'es favorable, écoute-moi: reçois le prix du champ, et j'y ensevelirai ma morte.
14 And Ephron answered Abraham, saying unto him:
Éphron répondit à Abraham:
15 'My lord, hearken unto me: a piece of land worth four hundred shekels of silver, what is that betwixt me and thee? bury therefore thy dead.'
Nullement, Seigneur, j'ai bien entendu; la terre est de quatre cents doubles drachmes d'argent; mais qu'est-ce que cela peut faire entre moi et toi? Ensevelis donc ta morte.
16 And Abraham hearkened unto Ephron; and Abraham weighed to Ephron the silver, which he had named in the hearing of the children of Heth, four hundred shekels of silver, current money with the merchant.
À ces paroles d'Éphron, Abraham plaça devant lui l'argent qu'il avait dit, au su des fils de Het: quatre cents doubles drachmes d'argent, éprouvé par les marchands.
17 So the field of Ephron, which was in Machpelah, which was before Mamre, the field, and the cave which was therein, and all the trees that were in the field, that were in all the border thereof round about, were made sure
Ainsi le champ d'Éphron, avec sa double caverne, qui est en face de Membré, le champ et la caverne, et tous les arbres du champ et tout ce qui se trouvait compris dans ses limites,
18 unto Abraham for a possession in the presence of the children of Heth, before all that went in at the gate of his city.
Furent acquis à Abraham, en présence des fils de Het, et de tous ceux qui entraient en cette ville.
19 And after this, Abraham buried Sarah his wife in the cave of the field of Machpelah before Mamre — the same is Hebron — in the land of Canaan.
Après cela, Abraham ensevelit Sarra sa femme dans la double caverne du champ, laquelle fait face à Membré: aujourd'hui Hébron, en la terre de Chanaan.
20 And the field, and the cave that is therein, were made sure unto Abraham for a possession of a burying-place by the children of Heth.
Et le champ et la caverne qu'il contenait furent confirmés à Abraham, comme sépulture, par les fils de Het.
