Ezekiel 18

1 And the word of the LORD came unto me, saying:

Et la parole du Seigneur me fut adressée, disant:

2 'What mean ye, that ye use this proverb in the land of Israel, saying: The fathers have eaten sour grapes, and the children's teeth are set on edge?

D’où vient que parmi vous vous tournez la parole en ce proverbe dans la terre d’Israël, disant: Des pères ont mangé du raisin vert, et les dents des enfants en sont agacées?

3 As I live, saith the Lord GOD, ye shall not have occasion any more to use this proverb in Israel.

Je vis, moi, dit le Seigneur Dieu, si cette parabole vous sera désormais tournée en proverbe dans Israël.

4 Behold, all souls are Mine; as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son is Mine; the soul that sinneth, it shall die.

Voilà que toutes les âmes sont à moi; comme l’âme du père, ainsi aussi l’âme du fils est à moi; l’âme qui aura péché, mourra elle-même.

5 But if a man be just, and do that which is lawful and right,

Et si un homme est juste, et qu’il pratique l’équité et la justice;

6 and hath not eaten upon the mountains, neither hath lifted up his eyes to the idols of the house of Israel, neither hath defiled his neighbour's wife, neither hath come near to a woman in her impurity;

Qu’il ne mange point sur les montagnes, et qu’il ne lève point ses yeux vers les idoles de la maison d’Israël; et qu’il ne viole point la femme de son prochain, et qu’il ne s’approche point d’une femme qui est dans ses mois;

7 and hath not wronged any, but hath restored his pledge for a debt, hath taken nought by robbery, hath given his bread to the hungry, and hath covered the naked with a garment;

Et qu’il ne contriste personne; qu’il rende le gage à son débiteur; que par violence il ne ravisse rien; qu’il donne de son pain à celui qui a faim, et qu’il couvre d’un vêtement celui qui est nu;

8 he that hath not given forth upon interest, neither hath taken any increase, that hath withdrawn his hand from iniquity, hath executed true justice between man and man,

Qu’il ne prête point à usure et ne reçoive pas plus qu’il n’a prêté; que de l’iniquité il détourne sa main, et qu’il rende un jugement équitable entre un homme et un homme;

9 hath walked in My statutes, and hath kept Mine ordinances, to deal truly; he is just, he shall surely live, saith the Lord GOD.

Qu’il marche dans mes préceptes, et garde mes ordonnances, afin d’accomplir la vérité; celui-là est juste, il vivra de la vie, dit le Seigneur Dieu.

10 If he beget a son that is a robber, a shedder of blood, and that doeth to a brother any of these things,

Mais s’il engendre un fils voleur, répandant le sang, et qui commette l’une de ces choses,

11 whereas he himself had not done any of these things, for he hath even eaten upon the mountains, and defiled his neighbour's wife,

Quand il ne les commettrait pas toutes, mais qui mange sur les montagnes, et qui souille la femme de son prochain,

12 hath wronged the poor and needy, hath taken by robbery, hath not restored the pledge, and hath lifted up his eyes to the idols, hath committed abomination,

Et qui contriste l’indigent et le pauvre, qui commette des rapines, qui ne rende point le gage a son débiteur, qui lève ses yeux vers les idoles, qui fasse des abominations,

13 hath given forth upon interest, and hath taken increase; shall he then live? he shall not live — he hath done all these abominations; he shall surely be put to death, his blood shall be upon him.

Qui prête à usure et qui reçoive plus qu’il n’a prêté; est-ce qu’il vivra? non, il ne vivra point; lorsqu’il aura fait toutes ces choses détestables, il mourra de mort, son sang sera sur lui-même.

14 Now, lo, if he beget a son, that seeth all his father's sins, which he hath done, and considereth, and doeth not such like,

Que s’il engendre un fils qui, voyant tous les péchés que son père a faits, craigne et ne fasse rien de semblable à ces péchés:

15 that hath not eaten upon the mountains, neither hath lifted up his eyes to the idols of the house of Israel, hath not defiled his neighbour's wife,

Qu’il ne mange point sur les montagnes, et qu’il ne lève point les yeux vers les idoles de la maison d’Israël; qu’il ne viole point la femme de son prochain,

16 neither hath wronged any, hath not taken aught to pledge, neither hath taken by robbery, but hath given his bread to the hungry, and hath covered the naked with a garment,

Et qu’il ne contriste personne; qu’il ne retienne pas le gage à son débiteur, et qu’il ne commette point de rapines; qu’il donne de son pain à celui qui a faim, et qu’il couvre d’un vêtement celui qui est nu;

17 that hath withdrawn his hand from the poor, that hath not received interest nor increase, hath executed Mine ordinances, hath walked in My statutes; he shall not die for the iniquity of his father, he shall surely live.

Qu’il détourne sa main de toute injustice contre le pauvre; qu’il ne donne point à usure, et ne reçoive rien au-delà de ce qu’il a prêté; qu’il accomplisse mes ordonnances, qu’il marche dans mes préceptes; celui-là ne mourra point dans l’iniquité de son père, mais il vivra de la vie.

18 As for his father, because he cruelly oppressed, committed robbery on his brother, and did that which is not good among his people, behold, he dieth for his iniquity.

Son père, qui a calomnié et a fait violence à son frère, et a commis le mal au milieu de son peuple, voilà qu’il est mort dans sa propre iniquité.

19 Yet say ye: Why doth not the son bear the iniquity of the father with him? When the son hath done that which is lawful and right, and hath kept all My statutes, and hath done them, he shall surely live.

Et vous dites: Pourquoi le fils n’a-t-il point porté l’iniquité de son père? Il est clair que c’est parce que le fils a agi selon l’équité et selon la justice, qu’il a gardé tous mes préceptes, et qu’il les a pratiqués, qu’il vivra de la vie.

20 The soul that sinneth, it shall die; the son shall not bear the iniquity of the father with him, neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son with him; the righteousness of the righteous shall be upon him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon him.

L’âme qui a péché mourra elle-même; un fils ne portera pas l’iniquité de son père, et un père ne portera pas l’iniquité de son fils: la justice du juste sera sur lui et l’impiété de l’impie sera sur lui.

21 But if the wicked turn from all his sins that he hath committed, and keep all My statutes, and do that which is lawful and right, he shall surely live, he shall not die.

Mais si l’impie fait pénitence de tous ses péchés qu’il a commis, et qu’il garde tous mes préceptes, et qu’il accomplisse le jugement et la justice, il vivra de la vie et ne mourra point.

22 None of his transgressions that he hath committed shall be remembered against him; for his righteousness that he hath done he shall live.

Je ne me souviendrai d’aucune de ses anciennes iniquités; à cause de la justice qu’il a pratiquée, il vivra.

23 Have I any pleasure at all that the wicked should die? saith the Lord GOD; and not rather that he should return from his ways, and live?

Est-ce que je veux la mort de l’impie, dit le Seigneur Dieu, et non qu’il se détourne de ses voies et qu’il vive?

24 But when the righteous turneth away from his righteousness, and committeth iniquity, and doeth according to all the abominations that the wicked man doeth, shall he live? None of his righteous deeds that he hath done shall be remembered; for his trespass that he trespassed, and for his sin that he hath sinned, for them shall he die.

Mais si le juste se détourne de sa justice, et qu’il fasse l’iniquité selon toutes les abominations que l’impie a coutume de commettre, est-ce qu’il vivra? toutes les œuvres de justice qu’il avait faites seront oubliées, et dans la prévarication par laquelle il a prévariqué, et dans le péché par lequel il a péché, il mourra.

25 Yet ye say: The way of the Lord is not equal. Hear now, O house of Israel: Is it My way that is not equal? is it not your ways that are unequal?

Et vous avez dit: Elle n’est pas juste, la voie du Seigneur. Ecoutez donc, maison d’Israël: Est-ce ma voie qui n’est pas juste, et ne sont-ce pas plutôt les vôtres qui sont corrompues?

26 When the righteous man turneth away from his righteousness, and committeth iniquity, he shall die therefor; for his iniquity that he hath done shall he die.

Car lorsqu’un juste se sera détourné de sa justice, et qu’il aura commis l’iniquité, il y mourra; dans l’injustice qu’il a commise, il mourra.

27 Again, when the wicked man turneth away from his wickedness that he hath committed, and doeth that which is lawful and right, he shall save his soul alive.

Et lorsqu’un impie se sera détourné de son impiété qu’il a commise, et qu’il agira selon l’équité et selon la justice, il vivifiera lui-même son âme.

28 Because he considereth, and turneth away from all his transgressions that he hath committed, he shall surely live, he shall not die.

Car réfléchissant, et se détournant de toutes ses iniquités, il vivra de la vie, et il ne mourra point.

29 Yet saith the house of Israel: The way of the Lord is not equal. O house of Israel, is it My ways that are not equal? is it not your ways that are unequal?

Et les enfants d’Israël disent: Elle n’est pas juste, la voie du Seigneur. Sont-ce mes voies qui ne sont pas justes, maison d’Israël, et ne sont-ce pas plutôt les vôtres qui sont corrompues?

30 Therefore I will judge you, O house of Israel, every one according to his ways, saith the Lord GOD. Return ye, and turn yourselves from all your transgressions; so shall they not be a stumblingblock of iniquity unto you.

C’est pour cela que je jugerai chacun selon ses voies, maison d’Israël, dit le Seigneur Dieu. Convertissez-vous, et faites pénitence de toutes vos iniquités, et l’iniquité ne vous sera pas à ruine.

31 Cast away from you all your transgressions, wherein ye have transgressed; and make you a new heart and a new spirit; for why will ye die, O house of Israel?

Rejetez loin de vous toutes les prévarications par lesquelles vous avez prévariqué, et faites-vous un cœur nouveau et un esprit nouveau; et pourquoi mourrez-vous, maison d’Israël?

32 For I have no pleasure in the death of him that dieth, saith the Lord GOD; wherefore turn yourselves, and live.

Car je ne veux point la mort de celui qui meurt, dit le Seigneur Dieu; revenez, et vivez.
