Exodus 18
1 Now Jethro, the priest of Midian, Moses' father-in-law, heard of all that God had done for Moses, and for Israel His people, how that the LORD had brought Israel out of Egypt.
Midőn hallotta Jitró, Midján papja, Mózes apja mindazt, amit Isten tett Mózessel és Izraellel, az ő népével, hogy kivezette az Örökkévaló Izraelt Egyiptomból;
2 And Jethro, Moses' father-in-law, took Zipporah, Moses' wife, after he had sent her away,
akkor vette Jitró, Mózes apja Cippórát, Mózes feleségét, miután ez elküldöttje volt,
3 and her two sons; of whom the name of the one was Gershom; for he said: 'I have been a stranger in a strange land';
és két fiát, akik közül az egyiknek a neve Gérsóm, mert azt mondta: idegen voltam, idegen földön;
4 and the name of the other was Eliezer: 'for the God of my father was my help, and delivered me from the sword of Pharaoh.'
a másiknak a neve pedig Eliezer: mert atyám Istene volt segítségemre és megmentett Fáraó kardjából.
5 And Jethro, Moses' father-in-law, came with his sons and his wife unto Moses into the wilderness where he was encamped, at the mount of God;
És eljött Jitró, Mózes apja és fiai, meg felesége Mózeshez a pusztába, ahol táborozott az Isten hegyénél.
6 and he said unto Moses: 'I thy father-in-law Jethro am coming unto thee, and thy wife, and her two sons with her.'
És megüzente Mózesnek: Én, apád, Jitró jövök hozzád, meg feleséged és két fia vele.
7 And Moses went out to meet his father-in-law, and bowed down and kissed him; and they asked each other of their welfare; and they came into the tent.
És Mózes kiment az ő apja elé, leborult és megcsókolta őt és kérdezték egymást jólétük felől, azután bementek a sátorba.
8 And Moses told his father-in-law all that the LORD had done unto Pharaoh and to the Egyptians for Israel's sake, all the travail that had come upon them by the way, and how the LORD delivered them.
Mózes elbeszélte az apjának mindazt, amit az Örökkévaló tett Fáraóval és Egyiptommal Izrael miatt; mindazt a fáradalmat, mely őket érte az úton, de megmentette őket az Örökkévaló.
9 And Jethro rejoiced for all the goodness which the LORD had done to Israel, in that He had delivered them out of the hand of the Egyptians.
És Jitró örült mindama jó miatt, amit az Örökkévaló tett Izraellel, hogy megmentette Egyiptom kezéből.
10 And Jethro said: 'Blessed be the LORD, who hath delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of Pharaoh; who hath delivered the people from under the hand of the Egyptians.
És mondta Jitró: Áldassék az Örökkévaló, ki megmentett benneteket Egyiptom kezéből és Fáraó kezéből; aki megmentette a népet Egyiptom keze alól!
11 Now I know that the LORD is greater than all gods; yea, for that they dealt proudly against them.'
Most tudom, hogy nagyobb az Örökkévaló minden isteneknél; mert amely dologgal vétkeztek, (az jött) rájuk.
12 And Jethro, Moses' father-in-law, took a burnt-offering and sacrifices for God; and Aaron came, and all the elders of Israel, to eat bread with Moses' father-in-law before God.
És hozott Jitró, Mózes apja égőáldozatot és vágóáldozatokat Istennek; és eljött Áron, meg Izrael minden véne, hogy egyenek kenyeret Mózes apjával Isten színe előtt.
13 And it came to pass on the morrow, that Moses sat to judge the people; and the people stood about Moses from the morning unto the evening.
És volt másnap, leült Mózes törvényt tenni a nép között; és ott állt a nép Mózes körül reggeltől estig.
14 And when Moses' father-in-law saw all that he did to the people, he said: 'What is this thing that thou doest to the people? why sittest thou thyself alone, and all the people stand about thee from morning unto even?'
És látta Mózes apja mindazt, amit az tesz a néppel, és mondta: Micsoda dolog ez, amit te teszel a néppel? Miért ülsz te egyedül és az egész nép áll körülötted reggeltől estig?
15 And Moses said unto his father-in-law: 'Because the people come unto me to inquire of God;
És mondta Mózes az ő apjának: Mivelhogy eljön hozzám a nép, hogy megkérdezze Istent.
16 when they have a matter, it cometh unto me; and I judge between a man and his neighbour, and I make them know the statutes of God, and His laws.'
Ha ügyük van; eljönnek hozzám és én ítélek ember és társa között, és ismertetem Isten törvényeit és tanait.
17 And Moses' father-in-law said unto him: 'The thing that thou doest is not good.
És mondta neki Mózes apja: Nem jó a dolog, amit te teszel.
18 Thou wilt surely wear away, both thou, and this people that is with thee; for the thing is too heavy for thee; thou art not able to perform it thyself alone.
El fogsz lankadni te is, meg a nép is, mely nálad van, mert túlságos nehéz a dolog neked, nem bírod azt végezni egyedül.
19 Hearken now unto my voice, I will give thee counsel, and God be with thee: be thou for the people before God, and bring thou the causes unto God.
Most tehát hallgass szavamra, tanácsot adok neked, Isten pedig legyen veled! Te légy a nép számára Istennel szemben és vidd te a dolgokat Isten elé.
20 And thou shalt teach them the statutes and the laws, and shalt show them the way wherein they must walk, and the work that they must do.
És világítsd meg nekik a törvényeket és tanokat, ismertesd meg velük az utat, melyen járjanak és a cselekedetet, melyet cselekedjenek.
21 Moreover thou shalt provide out of all the people able men, such as fear God, men of truth, hating unjust gain; and place such over them, to be rulers of thousands, rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens.
Te pedig szemelj ki az egész népből derék férfiakat, istenfélőket, igaz férfiakat, kik gyűlölik a haszonlesést, és tedd feléjük ezrek tisztjeivé, százak tisztjeivé, ötvenek tisztjeivé és tizek tisztjeivé.
22 And let them judge the people at all seasons; and it shall be, that every great matter they shall bring unto thee, but every small matter they shall judge themselves; so shall they make it easier for thee and bear the burden with thee.
Ők tegyenek törvényt a nép között minden időben és lesz, minden nagy ügyet hozzanak el hozzád, de minden kis ügyben ítéljenek ők; így könnyíts magadon és ők viseljék veled (a terhet).
23 If thou shalt do this thing, and God command thee so, then thou shalt be able to endure, and all this people also shall go to their place in peace.'
Ha ezt a dolgot megteszed és Isten megparancsolja neked, akkor megállhatsz és az egész nép is helyére jut békében.
24 So Moses hearkened to the voice of his father-in-law, and did all that he had said.
És Mózes hallgatott az ő apja szavára és megtett mindent, amit mondott.
25 And Moses chose able men out of all Israel, and made them heads over the people, rulers of thousands, rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens.
Kiválasztott Mózes derék férfiakat egész Izraelből és tette őket főnökökké a nép fölé, ezrek tisztjeivé, százak tisztjeivé, ötvenek tisztjeivé és tizek tisztjeivé,
26 And they judged the people at all seasons: the hard causes they brought unto Moses, but every small matter they judged themselves.
hogy törvényt tegyenek a nép között minden időben; a nehéz dolgot elviszik Mózeshez, minden kis dologban pedig ítélnek ők.
27 And Moses let his father-in-law depart; and he went his way into his own land.
És elbocsátotta Mózes az ő apját, és ez elment az országába.
