Esther 3
1 After these things did king Ahasuerus promote Haman the son of Hammedatha the Agagite, and advanced him, and set his seat above all the princes that were with him.
Après ces événements, le roi Assuérus agrandit Aman, fils de Medatha, l'Agagite, et il l'éleva et plaça son siège au-dessus de tous les Grands de son entourage.
2 And all the king's servants, that were in the king's gate, bowed down, and prostrated themselves before Haman; for the king had so commanded concerning him. But Mordecai bowed not down, nor prostrated himself before him.
Et tous les serviteurs du roi qui se tenaient à la porte du roi, se courbaient et se prosternaient devant Aman, car tel était l'ordre du roi à son égard. Mais Mardochée ne se courbait, ni ne se prosternait.
3 Then the king's servants, that were in the king's gate, said unto Mordecai: 'Why transgressest thou the king's commandment?'
Alors les serviteurs du roi qui se tenaient à la porte du roi, dirent à Mardochée: Pourquoi contreviens-tu à l'ordre du roi?
4 Now it came to pass, when they spoke daily unto him, and he hearkened not unto them, that they told Haman, to see whether Mordecai's words would stand; for he had told them that he was a Jew.
Et comme ils le lui disaient chaque jour, et qu'il ne les écoutait point, ils informèrent Aman pour voir si les discours de Mardochée tiendraient. Car il leur avait découvert qu'il était Juif.
5 And when Haman saw that Mordecai bowed not down, nor prostrated himself before him, then was Haman full of wrath.
Et Aman voyant que Mardochée ne se courbait ni ne se prosternait devant lui, il fut rempli de fureur.
6 But it seemed contemptible in his eyes to lay hands on Mordecai alone; for they had made known to him the people of Mordecai; wherefore Haman sought to destroy all the Jews that were throughout the whole kingdom of Ahasuerus, even the people of Mordecai.
Mais Aman trouvait indigne de lui de mettre la main sur Mardochée seul; car on lui avait découvert quel était le peuple de Mardochée, et Aman chercha à exterminer tous les Juifs qui se trouvaient dans tout l'empire d'Assuérus, le peuple de Mardochée.
7 In the first month, which is the month Nisan, in the twelfth year of king Ahasuerus, they cast pur, that is, the lot, before Haman from day to day, and from month to month, to the twelfth month, which is the month Adar.
Au premier mois, qui est le mois de Nisan, la douzième année du roi Assuérus, on consulta le Pur, c'est-à-dire le sort, devant Aman pour tous les jours et pour tous les mois jusqu'au douzième mois qui est le mois d'Adar.
8 And Haman said unto king Ahasuerus: 'There is a certain people scattered abroad and dispersed among the peoples in all the provinces of thy kingdom; and their laws are diverse from those of every people; neither keep they the king's laws; therefore it profiteth not the king to suffer them.
Et Aman dit au roi Assuérus: Il est un peuple séparé, et disséminé parmi les peuples dans toutes les provinces de ton empire, dont les lois diffèrent de celles de tous les peuples, et il ne pratique point les lois du roi; et il ne convient point au roi de le tolérer.
9 If it please the king, let it be written that they be destroyed; and I will pay ten thousand talents of silver into the hands of those that have the charge of the king's business, to bring it into the king's treasuries.'
Si le roi le trouve bon, qu'on rédige l'édit de leur destruction; et je paierai dix mille talents d'argent pesant, entre les mains des intendants pour les faire entrer au trésor royal.
10 And the king took his ring from his hand, and gave it unto Haman the son of Hammedatha the Agagite, the Jews' enemy.
Alors le roi tira son anneau de son doigt, et le donna à Aman, fils de Medatha, l'Agagite, l'ennemi des Juifs.
11 And the king said unto Haman: 'The silver is given to thee, the people also, to do with them as it seemeth good to thee.'
Et le roi dit à Aman: L'argent t'est donné, le peuple aussi, pour que tu en fasses ce que tu voudras.
12 Then were the king's scribes called in the first month, on the thirteenth day thereof, and there was written, according to all that Haman commanded, unto the king's satraps, and to the governors that were over every province, and to the princes of every people; to every province according to the writing thereof, and to every people after their language; in the name of king Ahasuerus was it written, and it was sealed with the king's ring.
Alors furent convoqués les Secrétaires du roi, le premier mois, le treizième jour du mois, et l'on écrivit en tout point dans le sens que prescrivait Aman, aux satrapes du roi et aux gouverneurs de chaque province, et aux chefs de chaque peuple, province par province, dans leur écriture, et peuple par peuple, dans sa langue; c'est au nom du roi Assuérus que l'on écrivit, et on scella avec l'anneau du roi.
13 And letters were sent by posts into all the king's provinces, to destroy, to slay, and to cause to perish, all Jews, both young and old, little children and women, in one day, even upon the thirteenth day of the twelfth month, which is the month Adar, and to take the spoil of them for a prey.
Et des lettres furent expédiées par courriers dans toutes les provinces du roi, à l'effet d'exterminer, massacrer et faire périr tous les Juifs, de l'adolescent au vieillard, petits enfants et femmes, en un jour, le treizième du douzième mois, c'est-à-dire du mois d'Adar, et de livrer leurs dépouilles au pillage.
14 The copy of the writing, to be given out for a decree in every province, was to be published unto all peoples, that they should be ready against that day.
Une copie du rescrit, afin que l'ordre fût donné dans toutes les provinces, fut communiquée à tous les peuples, afin qu'ils se tinssent prêts pour cette journée.
15 The posts went forth in haste by the king's commandment, and the decree was given out in Shushan the castle; and the king and Haman sat down to drink; but the city of Shushan was perplexed.
Les courriers partirent aussitôt sur l'ordre du roi, et l'édit fut promulgué dans Suse, la ville capitale. Et le roi et Aman s'attablèrent et burent; mais toute la ville de Suse était dans la consternation.
