Ecclesiastes 2
1 I said in my heart: 'Come now, I will try thee with mirth, and enjoy pleasure'; and, behold, this also was vanity.
Disse eu no meu coração: Ora vem, eu te provarei com alegria, atenta pois para o bem; porém eis que também isto era vaidade.
2 I said of laughter: 'It is mad'; and of mirth: 'What doth it accomplish?'
Ao riso disse: Estás doido; e à alegria: De que serve esta?
3 I searched in my heart how to pamper my flesh with wine, and, my heart conducting itself with wisdom, how yet to lay hold on folly, till I might see which it was best for the sons of men that they should do under the heaven the few days of their life.
Busquei no meu coração como me daria ao vinho (regendo porém o meu coração com sabedoria), e como reteria a loucura, até ver o que seria melhor que os filhos dos homens fizessem debaixo do céu, durante o número dos dias de sua vida.
4 I made me great works; I builded me houses; I planted me vineyards;
Fiz para mim obras magníficas: edifiquei para mim casas: plantei para mim vinhas.
5 I made me gardens and parks, and I planted trees in them of all kinds of fruit;
Fiz para mim hortas e jardins, e plantei neles árvores de toda a espécie de fruta.
6 I made me pools of water, to water therefrom the wood springing up with trees;
Fiz para mim tanques de águas, para regar com eles o bosque em que reverdeciam as árvores.
7 I acquired men-servants and maid-servants, and had servants born in my house; also I had great possessions of herds and flocks, above all that were before me in Jerusalem;
Adquiri servos e servas, e tive filhos de casa; também tive grande possessão de vacas e ovelhas, mais do que todos os que houve antes de mim em Jerusalém.
8 I gathered me also silver and gold, and treasure such as kings and the provinces have as their own; I got me men-singers and women-singers, and the delights of the sons of men, women very many.
Amontoei também para mim prata e ouro, e as jóias de reis e das províncias; provi-me de cantores e cantoras, e das delícias dos filhos dos homens: de instrumentos de música, e de toda a sorte de instrumentos.
9 So I was great, and increased more than all that were before me in Jerusalem; also my wisdom stood me in stead.
E engrandeci, e aumentei mais do que todos os que houve antes de mim em Jerusalém: perseverou também comigo a minha sabedoria.
10 And whatsoever mine eyes desired I kept not from them; I withheld not my heart from any joy, for my heart had joy of all my labour; and this was my portion from all my labour.
E tudo quanto desejaram os meus olhos não lho neguei, nem retive o meu coração de alegria alguma; mas o meu coração se alegrou de todo o meu trabalho, e esta foi a minha porção de todo o meu trabalho.
11 Then I looked on all the works that my hands had wrought, and on the labour that I had laboured to do; and, behold, all was vanity and a striving after wind, and there was no profit under the sun.
E olhei eu para todas as obras que fizeram as minhas mãos, como também para o trabalho que eu, trabalhando, tinha feito, e eis que tudo era vaidade e aflição de espírito, e que proveito nenhum havia debaixo do sol.
12 And I turned myself to behold wisdom, and madness and folly; for what can the man do that cometh after the king? even that which hath been already done.
Então passei à contemplação da sabedoria, e dos desvários, e da doidice; porque que fará o homem que seguir ao rei? o que outros já fizeram;
13 Then I saw that wisdom excelleth folly, as far as light excelleth darkness.
Então vi eu que a sabedoria é mais excelente do que a estultícia, quanto a luz é mais excelente do que as trevas.
14 The wise man, his eyes are in his head; but the fool walketh in darkness. And I also perceived that one event happeneth to them all.
Os olhos do sábio estão na sua cabeça, mas o louco anda em trevas: também então entendi eu que o mesmo successo lhes sucede a todos.
15 Then said I in my heart: 'As it happeneth to the fool, so will it happen even to me; and why was I then more wise?' Then I said in my heart, that this also is vanity.
Pelo que eu disse no meu coração: Como suceder ao tolo, assim me sucederá a mim; porque pois então busquei eu mais a sabedoria? Então disse no meu coração que também isto era vaidade.
16 For of the wise man, even as of the fool, there is no remembrance for ever; seeing that in the days to come all will long ago have been forgotten. And how must the wise man die even as the fool!
Porque nunca haverá mais lembrança do sábio do que do tolo; porquanto de tudo quanto agora há nos dias futuros total esquecimento haverá. E como morre o sábio? assim como o tolo.
17 So I hated life; because the work that is wrought under the sun was grievous unto me; for all is vanity and a striving after wind.
Pelo que aborreci esta vida, porque a obra que se faz debaixo do sol me parece má; porque tudo é vaidade e aflição de espírito.
18 And I hated all my labour wherein I laboured under the sun, seeing that I must leave it unto the man that shall be after me.
Também eu aborreci todo o meu trabalho, em que eu trabalhei debaixo do sol, visto que eu havia de deixa-lo ao homem que viesse depois de mim.
19 And who knoweth whether he will be a wise man or a fool? yet will he have rule over all my labour wherein I have laboured, and wherein I have shown myself wise under the sun. This also is vanity.
Porque quem sabe se será sábio ou tolo? todavia se assenhoreará sobre todo o meu trabalho em que trabalhei, e em que me houve sabiamente debaixo do sol; também isto é vaidade.
20 Therefore I turned about to cause my heart to despair concerning all the labour wherein I had laboured under the sun.
Pelo que eu me apliquei a fazer que o meu coração perdesse a esperança de todo o trabalho, em que trabalhei debaixo do sol.
21 For there is a man whose labour is with wisdom, and with knowledge, and with skill; yet to a man that hath not laboured therein shall he leave it for his portion. This also is vanity and a great evil.
Porque há homem que trabalha com sabedoria, e ciência, e destreza; todavia deixará o seu trabalho, como porção sua, a um homem que não trabalhou nele: também isto é vaidade e grande enfado.
22 For what hath a man of all his labour, and of the striving of his heart, wherein he laboureth under the sun?
Porque, que mais tem o homem de todo o seu trabalho, e fadiga do seu coração, em que ele anda trabalhando debaixo do sol?
23 For all his days are pains, and his occupation vexation; yea, even in the night his heart taketh not rest. This also is vanity.
Porque todos os seus dias são dores, e a sua ocupação é vexação; até de noite não descança o seu coração: também isto é vaidade.
24 There is nothing better for a man than that he should eat and drink, and make his soul enjoy pleasure for his labour. This also I saw, that it is from the hand of God.
Não é pois bom para o homem que coma e beba, e que faça gozar a sua alma do bem do seu trabalho? também eu vi que isto vem da mão de Deus.
25 For who will eat, or who will enjoy, if not I?
(Porque quem pode comer, ou quem o pode gozar melhor do que eu?).
26 For to the man that is good in His sight He giveth wisdom, and knowledge, and joy; but to the sinner He giveth the task, to gather and to heap up, that he may leave to him that is good in the sight of God. This also is vanity and a striving after wind.
Porque ao homem que é bom diante dele dá Deus sabedoria e conhecimento e alegria, porém ao pecador dá trabalho, para que ele ajunte, e amontoe, para o dar ao bom perante a sua face. também isto é vaidade e aflição de espírito.
