Ecclesiastes 2
1 I said in my heart: 'Come now, I will try thee with mirth, and enjoy pleasure'; and, behold, this also was vanity.
Je dis en mon cœur: Viens, [mon âme!] eh bien! je veux te faire essayer de la joie, et goûte ce qui est bon! Mais voici, cela aussi est une vanité:
2 I said of laughter: 'It is mad'; and of mirth: 'What doth it accomplish?'
je dis du rire, qu'il est extravagant, et de la joie: Que procure-t-elle?
3 I searched in my heart how to pamper my flesh with wine, and, my heart conducting itself with wisdom, how yet to lay hold on folly, till I might see which it was best for the sons of men that they should do under the heaven the few days of their life.
Je pris en mon cœur le parti de maintenir ma chair dans le vin, tandis que mon cœur me guiderait avec sagesse, et de m'attacher à la folie, jusqu'à ce que je visse ce qu'il est bon aux enfants des hommes de faire sous le ciel, pendant le petit nombre des jours de leur vie.
4 I made me great works; I builded me houses; I planted me vineyards;
J'exécutai de grands ouvrages: je me bâtis des maisons; je me plantai des vignes;
5 I made me gardens and parks, and I planted trees in them of all kinds of fruit;
je me fis des jardins et des parcs, et y plantai toutes sortes d'arbres à fruit;
6 I made me pools of water, to water therefrom the wood springing up with trees;
je me fis des étangs d'eau, pour en arroser la forêt qui montait en arbres;
7 I acquired men-servants and maid-servants, and had servants born in my house; also I had great possessions of herds and flocks, above all that were before me in Jerusalem;
j'achetai des serviteurs et des servantes, et j'eus des serfs nés dans la maison; j'eus aussi des troupeaux de gros et de menu bétail, plus que tous mes prédécesseurs à Jérusalem;
8 I gathered me also silver and gold, and treasure such as kings and the provinces have as their own; I got me men-singers and women-singers, and the delights of the sons of men, women very many.
je m'amassai aussi de l'argent et de l'or, et les trésors des rois et des provinces; je me procurai des chanteurs et des chanteuses, et, les délices des enfants des hommes, les plus belles des femmes;
9 So I was great, and increased more than all that were before me in Jerusalem; also my wisdom stood me in stead.
et je devins grand et plus considérable que tous mes prédécesseurs à Jérusalem;
10 And whatsoever mine eyes desired I kept not from them; I withheld not my heart from any joy, for my heart had joy of all my labour; and this was my portion from all my labour.
de plus ma sagesse me resta; et de tout ce que mes yeux demandaient, je ne leur refusai rien; je ne privai mon cœur d'aucune joie; car mon cœur eut de la joie dans tout mon labeur, et ce fut la part que je retirai de tout mon labeur.
11 Then I looked on all the works that my hands had wrought, and on the labour that I had laboured to do; and, behold, all was vanity and a striving after wind, and there was no profit under the sun.
Mais quand je considérai tous les ouvrages faits par mes mains, et le labeur dont je m'étais travaillé pour exécuter, je vis que tout est vanité et effort stérile, et que rien ne profite sous le soleil.
12 And I turned myself to behold wisdom, and madness and folly; for what can the man do that cometh after the king? even that which hath been already done.
Et je me mis à examiner la sagesse et la folie, et l'extravagance. (Car que fera l'homme qui succédera au Roi? Ce que jadis on a fait.)
13 Then I saw that wisdom excelleth folly, as far as light excelleth darkness.
Et je vis que la prééminence de la sagesse sur la folie est la même que la prééminence de la lumière sur les ténèbres:
14 The wise man, his eyes are in his head; but the fool walketh in darkness. And I also perceived that one event happeneth to them all.
le sage a ses yeux à la tête, et le fou chemine dans les ténèbres; néanmoins je reconnus aussi que l'un et l'autre ils subissent une même destinée.
15 Then said I in my heart: 'As it happeneth to the fool, so will it happen even to me; and why was I then more wise?' Then I said in my heart, that this also is vanity.
Alors je dis en mon cœur: La destinée de l'insensé, je la subirai aussi; et pourquoi ai-je été sage de reste? Et je dis en mon cœur: C'est aussi là une vanité.
16 For of the wise man, even as of the fool, there is no remembrance for ever; seeing that in the days to come all will long ago have been forgotten. And how must the wise man die even as the fool!
Car pour le sage, pas plus que pour le fou, il n'y a de mémoire éternelle, puisque dans les jours à venir ils seront oubliés l'un et l'autre depuis longtemps: le sage, hélas! meurt aussi bien que l'insensé.
17 So I hated life; because the work that is wrought under the sun was grievous unto me; for all is vanity and a striving after wind.
Alors la vie me fut odieuse, et je me dégoûtai de tout ce qui se passe sous le soleil; car tout est vanité et effort stérile.
18 And I hated all my labour wherein I laboured under the sun, seeing that I must leave it unto the man that shall be after me.
Et tout le labeur dont je m'étais travaillé sous le soleil, me fut odieux, car je dois le léguer à l'homme qui me succédera.
19 And who knoweth whether he will be a wise man or a fool? yet will he have rule over all my labour wherein I have laboured, and wherein I have shown myself wise under the sun. This also is vanity.
Et qui sait si ce sera un sage ou un fou? Et il disposera de tout le travail que j'ai exécuté sous le soleil avec tant de peine et de sagesse. C'est aussi là une vanité.
20 Therefore I turned about to cause my heart to despair concerning all the labour wherein I had laboured under the sun.
Alors j'en vins à laisser mon cœur désespérer de tout le labeur dont je m'étais travaillé sous le soleil.
21 For there is a man whose labour is with wisdom, and with knowledge, and with skill; yet to a man that hath not laboured therein shall he leave it for his portion. This also is vanity and a great evil.
En effet qu'il se trouve un homme dont le travail aura été fait sagesse, connaissance et succès, c'est à l'homme qui ne se sera point occupé, qu'il le laissera comme héritage. C'est aussi là une vanité et un grand mal.
22 For what hath a man of all his labour, and of the striving of his heart, wherein he laboureth under the sun?
Car que revient-il à l'homme pour tout son labeur et la préoccupation de son cœur, dont il s'est tourmenté sous le soleil?
23 For all his days are pains, and his occupation vexation; yea, even in the night his heart taketh not rest. This also is vanity.
En effet tous ses jours sont douloureux, et le chagrin est son affaire; même la nuit son cœur ne repose pas. C'est aussi là une vanité.
24 There is nothing better for a man than that he should eat and drink, and make his soul enjoy pleasure for his labour. This also I saw, that it is from the hand of God.
Rien de mieux pour l'homme que de manger et de boire, et de faire goûter du bien-être à son âme, pendant son travail. Je vis que cela aussi est un don de la main de Dieu.
25 For who will eat, or who will enjoy, if not I?
Qui peut en effet manger et jouir, si ce n'est moi?
26 For to the man that is good in His sight He giveth wisdom, and knowledge, and joy; but to the sinner He giveth the task, to gather and to heap up, that he may leave to him that is good in the sight of God. This also is vanity and a striving after wind.
Car à l'homme qui Lui plaît, Il donne sagesse et science et joie; mais au pécheur Il donne la tâche d'amasser et d'accumuler, pour le donner à celui qui plaît à Dieu. C'est aussi là une vanité et un effort stérile.
