Ecclesiastes 11
1 Cast thy bread upon the waters, for thou shalt find it after many days.
Juallah hasil panenmu ke negeri asing, karena sesudah beberapa waktu, kamu akan menerima keuntungannya.
2 Divide a portion into seven, yea, even into eight; for thou knowest not what evil shall be upon the earth.
Bagilah penghasilanmu dalam berbagai usaha, karena kamu tidak tahu bencana apa yang akan terjadi.
3 If the clouds be full of rain, they empty themselves upon the earth; and if a tree fall in the south, or in the north, in the place where the tree falleth, there shall it be.
Apabila melihat awan gelap dan tebal, jangan heran kalau hujan turun. Ke arah mana pun pohon tumbang, di sanalah pohon itu tetap tergeletak.
4 He that observeth the wind shall not sow; and he that regardeth the clouds shall not reap.
Namun jangan terlalu dipengaruhi oleh situasi, karena kalau kamu selalu menunggu sampai angin dan cuaca menjadi sempurna, kamu tidak akan pernah menabur benih dan tidak akan memanen hasilnya.
5 As thou knowest not what is the way of the wind, nor how the bones do grow in the womb of her that is with child; even so thou knowest not the work of God who doeth all things.
Sebagaimana kamu tidak bisa menebak arah angin akan bertiup, atau mengerti bagaimana tubuh seorang bayi terbentuk di dalam rahim ibunya, demikianlah kamu tidak dapat mengerti berbagai pekerjaan Allah, Pencipta segala sesuatu.
6 In the morning sow thy seed, and in the evening withhold not thy hand; for thou knowest not which shall prosper, whether this or that, or whether they both shall be alike good.
Taburlah benihmu di pagi hari dan lakukanlah berbagai usaha yang lain sampai waktunya tidur di malam hari. Karena kamu tidak tahu usaha mana yang akan berhasil— atau malah semuanya akan berhasil dengan baik.
7 And the light is sweet, and a pleasant thing it is for the eyes to behold the sun.
Alangkah bahagianya melihat cahaya matahari di pagi hari. Senang sekali rasanya bisa hidup.
8 For if a man live many years, let him rejoice in them all, and remember the days of darkness, for they shall be many. All that cometh is vanity.
Namun ingatlah bahwa suatu hari kamu akan mati, dan masa dalam kematian itu jauh lebih lama dibandingkan hidup di dunia ini. Maka kalau kamu diberi umur panjang, bersyukurlah dan nikmatilah setiap hari, sebab apa yang terjadi sesudah kematian masih misteri.
9 Rejoice, O young man, in thy youth; and let thy heart cheer thee in the days of thy youth, and walk in the ways of thy heart, and in the sight of thine eyes; but know thou, that for all these things God will bring thee into judgment.
Hai anak muda, bersenang-senanglah selama kamu masih muda! Lakukanlah apa pun keinginan hatimu. Tetapi ingatlah bahwa kelak kamu harus bertanggung jawab kepada Allah atas semua yang kamu perbuat.
10 Therefore remove vexation from thy heart, and put away evil from thy flesh; for childhood and youth are vanity.
Usirlah rasa kuatir dari hatimu, karena kamu masih sehat. Tetapi ingat, masa mudamu akan cepat berlalu. Semuanya sia-sia!
