Ecclesiastes 10
1 Dead flies make the ointment of the perfumer fetid and putrid; so doth a little folly outweigh wisdom and honour.
Assim como a mosca morta faz exhalar mau cheiro e evaporar o unguento do perfumador, assim o faz ao famoso em sabedoria e em honra uma pouca de estulticia.
2 A wise man's understanding is at his right hand; but a fool's understanding at his left.
O coração do sabio está á sua dextra, mas o coração do tolo está á sua esquerda.
3 Yea also, when a fool walketh by the way, his understanding faileth him, and he saith to every one that he is a fool.
E, até quando o tolo vae pelo caminho, falta-lhe o seu entendimento e diz a todos que é tolo.
4 If the spirit of the ruler rise up against thee, leave not thy place; for gentleness allayeth great offences.
Levantando-se contra ti o espirito do governador, não deixes o teu logar, porque é um remedio que aquieta grandes peccados.
5 There is an evil which I have seen under the sun, like an error which proceedeth from a ruler:
Ainda ha um mal que vi debaixo do sol, como o erro que procede de diante do governador.
6 Folly is set on great heights, and the rich sit in low place.
Ao tolo assentam em grandes alturas, mas os ricos estão assentados na baixeza.
7 I have seen servants upon horses, and princes walking as servants upon the earth.
Vi os servos a cavallo, e os principes que andavam a pé como servos sobre a terra.
8 He that diggeth a pit shall fall into it; and whoso breaketh through a fence, a serpent shall bite him.
Quem cavar uma cova, cairá n'ella, e, quem romper um muro, uma cobra o morderá.
9 Whoso quarrieth stones shall be hurt therewith; and he that cleaveth wood is endangered thereby.
Quem acarretar pedras, será maltratado por ellas, e o que rachar lenha perigará com ella.
10 If the iron be blunt, and one do not whet the edge, then must he put to more strength; but wisdom is profitable to direct.
Se estiver embotado o ferro, e não se amollar o córte, então se devem pôr mais forças: mas a sabedoria é excellente para dirigir.
11 If the serpent bite before it is charmed, then the charmer hath no advantage.
Se a cobra morder, não estando encantada, então remedio nenhum se espera do encantador, por mais habil que seja.
12 The words of a wise man's mouth are gracious; but the lips of a fool will swallow up himself.
Nas palavras da bocca do sabio ha favor, porém os labios do tolo o devoram.
13 The beginning of the words of his mouth is foolishness; and the end of his talk is grievous madness.
O principio das palavras da sua bocca é a estulticia, e o fim da sua bocca um desvario pessimo.
14 A fool also multiplieth words; yet man knoweth not what shall be; and that which shall be after him, who can tell him?
Bem que o tolo multiplique as palavras, não sabe o homem o que ha de ser; e quem lhe fará saber o que será depois d'elle?
15 The labour of fools wearieth every one of them, for he knoweth not how to go to the city.
O trabalho dos tolos a cada um d'elles fatiga, porque não sabem ir á cidade.
16 Woe to thee, O land, when thy king is a boy, and thy princes feast in the morning!
Ai de ti, ó terra, cujo rei é criança, e cujos principes comem de manhã.
17 Happy art thou, O land, when thy king is a free man, and thy princes eat in due season, in strength, and not in drunkenness!
Bemaventurada tu, ó terra, cujo rei é filho dos nobres, e cujos principes comem a tempo, para refazerem as forças, e não para bebedice.
18 By slothfulness the rafters sink in; and through idleness of the hands the house leaketh.
Pela muita preguiça se enfraquece o tecto, e pela frouxidão das mãos goteja a casa.
19 A feast is made for laughter, and wine maketh glad the life; and money answereth all things.
Para rir se fazem convites, e o vinho alegra a vida, e por tudo o dinheiro responde.
20 Curse not the king, no, not in thy thought, and curse not the rich in thy bedchamber; for a bird of the air shall carry the voice, and that which hath wings shall tell the matter.
Nem ainda no teu pensamento amaldiçoes ao rei, nem tão pouco no mais interior da tua recamara amaldiçoes ao rico: porque as aves dos céus levariam a voz, e os que teem azas dariam noticia da palavra.
