Deuteronomy 8
1 All the commandment which I command thee this day shall ye observe to do, that ye may live, and multiply, and go in and possess the land which the LORD swore unto your fathers.
"Tous les préceptes que je vous impose en ce jour, ayez soin de les suivre, afin que vous viviez et deveniez nombreux, quand vous serez entrés en possession de ce pays, que l’Éternel a promis par son serment à vos pères.
2 And thou shalt remember all the way which the LORD thy God hath led thee these forty years in the wilderness, that He might afflict thee, to prove thee, to know what was in thy heart, whether thou wouldest keep His commandments, or no.
Tu te rappelleras cette traversée de quarante ans que l’Éternel, ton Dieu, t’a fait subir dans le désert, afin de t’éprouver par l’adversité, afin de connaître le fond de ton cœur, si tu resterais fidèle à ses lois, ou non.
3 And He afflicted thee, and suffered thee to hunger, and fed thee with manna, which thou knewest not, neither did thy fathers know; that He might make thee know that man doth not live by bread only, but by every thing that proceedeth out of the mouth of the LORD doth man live.
Oui, il t’a fait souffrir et endurer la faim, puis il t’a nourri avec cette manne que tu ne connaissais pas et que n’avaient pas connue tes pères; pour te prouver que l’homme ne vit pas seulement de pain, mais qu’il peut vivre de tout ce que produit le verbe du Seigneur.
4 Thy raiment waxed not old upon thee, neither did thy foot swell, these forty years.
Tes vêtements ne se sont pas usés sur toi, tes pieds n’ont pas été meurtris, durant ces quarante années.
5 And thou shalt consider in thy heart, that, as a man chasteneth his son, so the LORD thy God chasteneth thee.
Tu reconnaîtras donc en ta conscience que si l’Éternel, ton Dieu, te châtie, c’est comme un père châtie son fils;
6 And thou shalt keep the commandments of the LORD thy God, to walk in His ways, and to fear Him.
et tu observeras les commandements de l’Éternel, ton Dieu, en marchant dans ses voies et en le révérant.
7 For the LORD thy God bringeth thee into a good land, a land of brooks of water, of fountains and depths, springing forth in valleys and hills;
Car l’Éternel, ton Dieu, te conduit dans un pays fortuné, un pays plein de cours d’eau, de sources et de torrents, qui s’épandent dans la vallée ou sur la montagne;
8 a land of wheat and barley, and vines and fig-trees and pomegranates; a land of olive-trees and honey;
un pays qui produit le froment et l’orge, le raisin, la figue et la grenade, l’olive huileuse et le miel;
9 a land wherein thou shalt eat bread without scarceness, thou shalt not lack any thing in it; a land whose stones are iron, and out of whose hills thou mayest dig brass.
un pays où tu ne mangeras pas ton pain avec parcimonie, où tu ne manqueras de rien; les cailloux y sont du fer, et de ses montagnes tu extrairas du cuivre.
10 And thou shalt eat and be satisfied, and bless the LORD thy God for the good land which He hath given thee.
Tu jouiras de ces biens, tu t’en rassasieras. Rends grâce alors à l’Éternel, ton Dieu, du bon pays qu’il t’aura donné!
11 Beware lest thou forget the LORD thy God, in not keeping His commandments, and His ordinances, and His statutes, which I command thee this day;
Garde-toi d’oublier l’Éternel, ton Dieu, de négliger ses préceptes, ses institutions et ses lois, que je t’impose en ce jour.
12 lest when thou hast eaten and art satisfied, and hast built goodly houses, and dwelt therein;
Peut-être, jouissant d’une nourriture abondante, bâtissant de belles maisons où tu vivras tranquille,
13 and when thy herds and thy flocks multiply, and thy silver and thy gold is multiplied, and all that thou hast is multiplied;
voyant prospérer ton gros et ton menu bétail, croître ton argent et ton or, se multiplier tous tes biens,
14 then thy heart be lifted up, and thou forget the LORD thy God, who brought thee forth out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage;
peut-être ton cœur s’enorgueillira-t-il, et tu oublieras l’Éternel, ton Dieu, qui t’a tiré du pays d’Egypte, de la maison de servitude;
15 who led thee through the great and dreadful wilderness, wherein were serpents, fiery serpents, and scorpions, and thirsty ground where was no water; who brought thee forth water out of the rock of flint;
qui t’a conduit à travers ce vaste et redoutable désert, plein de serpents venimeux et de scorpions, sol aride et sans eau; qui a fait, pour toi, jaillir des eaux de la pierre des rochers;
16 who fed thee in the wilderness with manna, which thy fathers knew not, that He might afflict thee, and that He might prove thee, to do thee good at thy latter end;
qui t’a nourri, dans ce désert, d’une manne inconnue à tes aïeux, car il voulait t’éprouver par les tribulations pour te rendre heureux à la fin;
17 and thou say in thy heart: 'My power and the might of my hand hath gotten me this wealth.'
et tu diras en ton cœur: "C’Est ma propre force, c’est le pouvoir de mon bras, qui m’a valu cette richesse."
18 But thou shalt remember the LORD thy God, for it is He that giveth thee power to get wealth, that He may establish His covenant which He swore unto thy fathers, as it is this day.
Non! C’Est de l’Éternel, ton Dieu, que tu dois te souvenir, car c’est lui qui t’aura donné le moyen d’arriver à cette prospérité, voulant accomplir l’alliance jurée à tes pères, comme il le fera à cette époque.
19 And it shall be, if thou shalt forget the LORD thy God, and walk after other gods, and serve them, and worship them, I forewarn you this day that ye shall surely perish.
Or, si jamais tu oublies l’Éternel, ton Dieu, si tu t’attaches à des dieux étrangers, que tu les serves et que tu leur rendes hommage, je vous le déclare en ce jour, vous périrez!
20 As the nations that the LORD maketh to perish before you, so shall ye perish; because ye would not hearken unto the voice of the LORD your God.
Comme ces peuples que l’Éternel fait disparaître devant vous, ainsi vous disparaîtrez vous-mêmes, pour n’avoir pas obéi à la voix de l’Éternel, votre Dieu!
