Deuteronomy 29
1 These are the words of the covenant which the LORD commanded Moses to make with the children of Israel in the land of Moab, beside the covenant which He made with them in Horeb.
Telles sont les paroles de l'alliance que Yahvé ordonna à Moïse de conclure avec les enfants d'Israël au pays de Moab, en complément de l'alliance qu'il avait conclue avec eux à Horeb.
2 And Moses called unto all Israel, and said unto them: Ye have seen all that the LORD did before your eyes in the land of Egypt unto Pharaoh, and unto all his servants, and unto all his land;
Moïse appela tout Israël, et leur dit: Vos yeux ont vu tout ce que Yahvé a fait au pays d'Égypte à Pharaon, à tous ses serviteurs et à tout son pays,
3 the great trials which thine eyes saw, the signs and those great wonders;
les grandes épreuves que vos yeux ont vues, les signes et ces grands prodiges.
4 but the LORD hath not given you a heart to know, and eyes to see, and ears to hear, unto this day.
Mais Yahvé ne vous a pas donné, jusqu'à ce jour, un cœur pour connaître, des yeux pour voir et des oreilles pour entendre.
5 And I have led you forty years in the wilderness; your clothes are not waxen old upon you, and thy shoe is not waxen old upon thy foot.
Je vous ai conduits pendant quarante ans dans le désert. Vos vêtements n'ont pas vieilli sur vous, et vos sandales n'ont pas vieilli à vos pieds.
6 Ye have not eaten bread, neither have ye drunk wine or strong drink; that ye might know that I am the LORD your God.
Vous n'avez pas mangé de pain, et vous n'avez pas bu de vin ni de boisson forte, afin que vous sachiez que je suis Yahvé votre Dieu.
7 And when ye came unto this place, Sihon the king of Heshbon, and Og the king of Bashan, came out against us unto battle, and we smote them.
Lorsque vous êtes arrivés dans ce lieu, Sihon, roi de Hesbon, et Og, roi de Basan, sont sortis contre nous pour nous combattre, et nous les avons battus.
8 And we took their land, and gave it for an inheritance unto the Reubenites, and to the Gadites, and to the half-tribe of the Manassites.
Nous avons pris leur pays et l'avons donné en héritage aux Rubénites, aux Gadites et à la demi-tribu des Manassites.
9 Observe therefore the words of this covenant, and do them, that ye may make all that ye do to prosper.
Gardez donc les paroles de cette alliance et mettez-les en pratique, afin de prospérer dans tout ce que vous ferez.
10 Ye are standing this day all of you before the LORD your God: your heads, your tribes, your elders, and your officers, even all the men of Israel,
Vous vous tenez tous aujourd'hui devant l'Éternel, votre Dieu: vos chefs, vos tribus, vos anciens et vos officiers, tous les hommes d'Israël,
11 your little ones, your wives, and thy stranger that is in the midst of thy camp, from the hewer of thy wood unto the drawer of thy water;
vos petits enfants, vos femmes, et les étrangers qui sont au milieu de vos camps, depuis celui qui coupe votre bois jusqu'à celui qui tire votre eau,
12 that thou shouldest enter into the covenant of the LORD thy God — and into His oath — which the LORD thy God maketh with thee this day;
afin que vous entriez dans l'alliance de l'Éternel, votre Dieu, et dans le serment qu'il vous fait aujourd'hui,
13 that He may establish thee this day unto Himself for a people, and that He may be unto thee a God, as He spoke unto thee, and as He swore unto thy fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.
afin qu'il vous établisse aujourd'hui comme son peuple et qu'il soit votre Dieu, comme il vous l'a dit et comme il l'a juré à vos pères, Abraham, Isaac et Jacob.
14 Neither with you only do I make this covenant and this oath;
Ce n'est pas seulement avec vous que je fais cette alliance et ce serment,
15 but with him that standeth here with us this day before the LORD our God, and also with him that is not here with us this day —
mais avec ceux qui se tiennent aujourd'hui avec nous devant Yahvé notre Dieu, et aussi avec ceux qui ne sont pas aujourd'hui avec nous
16 for ye know how we dwelt in the land of Egypt; and how we came through the midst of the nations through which ye passed;
(car vous savez comment nous avons vécu dans le pays d'Égypte, et comment nous sommes passés au milieu des nations par lesquelles vous avez passé;
17 and ye have seen their detestable things, and their idols, wood and stone, silver and gold, which were with them —
et vous avez vu leurs abominations et leurs idoles de bois, de pierre, d'argent et d'or, qui étaient parmi elles);
18 lest there should be among you man, or woman, or family, or tribe, whose heart turneth away this day from the LORD our God, to go to serve the gods of those nations; lest there should be among you a root that beareth gall and wormwood;
de peur qu'il n'y ait parmi vous un homme, une femme, une famille ou une tribu dont le cœur se détourne aujourd'hui de l'Éternel, notre Dieu, pour aller servir les dieux de ces nations, de peur qu'il n'y ait parmi vous une racine qui produise un poison amer,
19 and it come to pass, when he heareth the words of this curse, that he bless himself in his heart, saying: 'I shall have peace, though I walk in the stubbornness of my heart — that the watered be swept away with the dry';
et qu'en entendant les paroles de cette malédiction, il ne se bénisse dans son cœur, en disant: « J'aurai la paix, quoique je marche dans l'obstination de mon cœur », pour détruire l'humide par le sec.
20 the LORD will not be willing to pardon him, but then the anger of the LORD and His jealousy shall be kindled against that man, and all the curse that is written in this book shall lie upon him, and the LORD shall blot out his name from under heaven;
L'Éternel ne lui pardonnera pas, mais alors la colère et la jalousie de l'Éternel fumeront contre cet homme, et toute la malédiction écrite dans ce livre tombera sur lui, et l'Éternel effacera son nom de dessous le ciel.
21 and the LORD shall separate him unto evil out of all the tribes of Israel, according to all the curses of the covenant that is written in this book of the law.
Yahvé le mettra à part pour le mal, parmi toutes les tribus d'Israël, selon toutes les malédictions de l'alliance écrites dans ce livre de la loi.
22 And the generation to come, your children that shall rise up after you, and the foreigner that shall come from a far land, shall say, when they see the plagues of that land, and the sicknesses wherewith the LORD hath made it sick;
La génération à venir - tes enfants qui se lèveront après toi, et l'étranger qui viendra d'un pays lointain - dira, quand elle verra les plaies de ce pays, et les maladies dont Yahvé l'a rendu malade,
23 and that the whole land thereof is brimstone, and salt, and a burning, that it is not sown, nor beareth, nor any grass groweth therein, like the overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah, Admah and Zeboiim, which the LORD overthrew in His anger, and in His wrath;
que toute sa terre n'est que soufre, sel et brûlure, qu'elle ne se sème pas, ne produit pas, et qu'il n'y pousse pas d'herbe, comme Sodome, Gomorrhe, Adma et Tseboïm, que Yahvé a détruites dans sa colère et dans sa fureur.
24 even all the nations shall say 'Wherefore hath the LORD done thus unto this land? what meaneth the heat of this great anger?'
Toutes les nations diront: « Pourquoi Yahvé a-t-il fait cela à ce pays? Que signifie l'ardeur de cette grande colère? »
25 then men shall say: 'Because they forsook the covenant of the LORD, the God of their fathers, which He made with them when He brought them forth out of the land of Egypt;
Alors on dira: « Parce qu'ils ont abandonné l'alliance de Yahvé, le Dieu de leurs pères, qu'il avait conclue avec eux en les faisant sortir du pays d'Égypte,
26 and went and served other gods, and worshipped them, gods that they knew not, and that He had not allotted unto them;
ils sont allés servir d'autres dieux et se prosterner devant eux, des dieux qu'ils ne connaissaient pas et qu'il ne leur avait pas donnés.
27 therefore the anger of the LORD was kindled against this land, to bring upon it all the curse that is written in this book;
Aussi la colère de Yahvé s'enflamma-t-elle contre ce pays, pour faire venir sur lui toutes les malédictions qui sont écrites dans ce livre.
28 and the LORD rooted them out of their land in anger, and in wrath, and in great indignation, and cast them into another land, as it is this day'. —
Yahvé les a déracinés de leur pays avec colère, avec fureur et avec une grande indignation, et il les a poussés dans un autre pays, comme c'est le cas aujourd'hui. »
29 The secret things belong unto the LORD our God; but the things that are revealed belong unto us and to our children for ever, that we may do all the words of this law.
Les choses secrètes appartiennent à Yahvé notre Dieu; mais les choses révélées nous appartiennent, à nous et à nos enfants, pour toujours, afin que nous mettions en pratique toutes les paroles de cette loi.
