Deuteronomy 20
1 When thou goest forth to battle against thine enemies, and seest horses, and chariots, and a people more than thou, thou shalt not be afraid of them; for the LORD thy God is with thee, who brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.
Wenn du wider deinen Feind in den Krieg ziehst und Rosse und Wagen siehst, ein Volk, das größer ist als du, so fürchte dich nicht vor ihnen; denn der HERR, dein Gott, der dich aus Ägypten heraufgeführt hat, ist mit dir.
2 And it shall be, when ye draw nigh unto the battle, that the priest shall approach and speak unto the people,
Wenn es nun zur Schlacht kommen soll, so trete der Priester herzu und rede mit dem Volk und sage zu ihm: Israel, höre zu:
3 and shall say unto them: 'Hear, O Israel, ye draw nigh this day unto battle against your enemies; let not your heart faint; fear not, nor be alarmed, neither be ye affrighted at them;
Ihr zieht heute in den Kampf wider eure Feinde; euer Herz verzage nicht! Fürchtet euch nicht und erschrecket nicht und lasset euch nicht vor ihnen grauen!
4 for the LORD your God is He that goeth with you, to fight for you against your enemies, to save you.'
Denn der HERR, euer Gott, geht mit euch, daß er für euch mit euren Feinden streite, um euch zu helfen.
5 And the officers shall speak unto the people, saying: 'What man is there that hath built a new house, and hath not dedicated it? let him go and return to his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man dedicate it.
Auch die Amtleute sollen mit dem Volke reden und sagen: Wer ein neues Haus gebaut und es noch nicht eingeweiht hat, der gehe hin und kehre in sein Haus zurück, damit er nicht im Kriege umkomme und ein anderer es einweihe.
6 And what man is there that hath planted a vineyard, and hath not used the fruit thereof? let him go and return unto his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man use the fruit thereof.
Wer einen Weinberg gepflanzt und ihn noch nie abgelesen hat, der gehe und kehre wieder in sein Haus zurück, daß er nicht im Krieg umkomme und ein anderer die erste Lese halte!
7 And what man is there that hath betrothed a wife, and hath not taken her? let him go and return unto his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man take her.'
Wer sich mit einem Weibe verlobt und sie noch nicht heimgeführt hat, der gehe hin und kehre wieder in sein Haus zurück, daß er nicht im Krieg umkomme und ein anderer sie heimführe.
8 And the officers shall speak further unto the people, and they shall say: 'What man is there that is fearful and faint-hearted? let him go and return unto his house, lest his brethren's heart melt as his heart.'
Und die Amtleute sollen weiter mit dem Volke reden und sagen: Wer sich fürchtet und ein verzagtes Herz hat, der gehe hin und kehre wieder in sein Haus zurück, damit er nicht auch das Herz seiner Brüder so verzagt mache, wie sein Herz ist!
9 And it shall be, when the officers have made an end of speaking unto the people, that captains of hosts shall be appointed at the head of the people.
Und wenn die Amtleute aufgehört haben, zu dem Volke zu reden, so sollen sie Hauptleute an die Spitze des Volkes stellen.
10 When thou drawest nigh unto a city to fight against it, then proclaim peace unto it.
Wenn du vor eine Stadt ziehst, sie zu bekriegen, so sollst du ihr Frieden anbieten.
11 And it shall be, if it make thee answer of peace, and open unto thee, then it shall be, that all the people that are found therein shall become tributary unto thee, and shall serve thee.
Antwortet sie dir friedlich und tut sie dir auf, so soll alles Volk, das darin gefunden wird, dir fronpflichtig und dienstbar sein.
12 And if it will make no peace with thee, but will make war against thee, then thou shalt besiege it.
Will sie aber nicht friedlich mit dir unterhandeln, sondern mit dir Krieg führen, so belagere sie.
13 And when the LORD thy God delivereth it into thy hand, thou shalt smite every male thereof with the edge of the sword;
Und wenn der HERR, dein Gott, sie dir in die Hand gibt, so sollst du alles, was darin männlich ist, mit der Schärfe des Schwertes schlagen;
14 but the women, and the little ones, and the cattle, and all that is in the city, even all the spoil thereof, shalt thou take for a prey unto thyself; and thou shalt eat the spoil of thine enemies, which the LORD thy God hath given thee.
aber die Weiber und Kinder und das Vieh und alles, was in der Stadt ist, und allen Raub sollst du dir zur Beute nehmen und sollst essen von der Beute deiner Feinde, die der HERR, dein Gott, dir gegeben hat.
15 Thus shalt thou do unto all the cities which are very far off from thee, which are not of the cities of these nations.
Also sollst du allen Städten tun, die sehr ferne von dir liegen, und nicht zu den Städten dieser Völker hier gehören.
16 Howbeit of the cities of these peoples, that the LORD thy God giveth thee for an inheritance, thou shalt save alive nothing that breatheth,
Aber in den Städten dieser Völker, die der HERR, dein Gott, dir zum Erbe geben wird, sollst du nichts leben lassen, was Odem hat,
17 but thou shalt utterly destroy them: the Hittite, and the Amorite, the Canaanite, and the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite; as the LORD thy God hath commanded thee;
sondern du sollst an ihnen den Bann vollstrecken, nämlich an den Hetitern, Amoritern, Kanaanitern, Pheresitern, Hevitern und Jebusitern; wie der HERR, dein Gott, dir geboten hat,
18 that they teach you not to do after all their abominations, which they have done unto their gods, and so ye sin against the LORD your God.
daß sie euch nicht lehren alle ihre Greuel zu verüben, die sie mit ihren Göttern getan, und daß ihr euch nicht an dem HERRN, eurem Gott, versündiget.
19 When thou shalt besiege a city a long time, in making war against it to take it, thou shalt not destroy the trees thereof by wielding an axe against them; for thou mayest eat of them, but thou shalt not cut them down; for is the tree of the field man, that it should be besieged of thee?
Wenn du lange Zeit vor einer Stadt liegen mußt, wider die du streitest, um sie einzunehmen, so sollst du ihre Bäume nicht verderben, indem du die Axt daran legst; denn du kannst davon essen, darum sollst du sie nicht abhauen. Ist denn ein solcher Baum des Feldes ein Mensch, daß er von dir mit in die Belagerung einbezogen wird?
20 Only the trees of which thou knowest that they are not trees for food, them thou mayest destroy and cut down, that thou mayest build bulwarks against the city that maketh war with thee, until it fall.
Was aber Bäume sind, von denen du weißt, daß man nicht davon ißt, so magst du dieselben verderben und umhauen und Bollwerke daraus bauen wider die Stadt, die mit dir kriegt, bis du sie überwältigt hast.
