Deuteronomy 20
1 When thou goest forth to battle against thine enemies, and seest horses, and chariots, and a people more than thou, thou shalt not be afraid of them; for the LORD thy God is with thee, who brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.
১যখন তুমি তোমার শত্রুদের বিরুদ্ধে যুদ্ধ করতে যাবে এবং যদি দেখো নিজের থেকে বেশি ঘোড়া, রথ ও লোক দেখ, তবে সেই সব থেকে ভয় পেয় না, সদাপ্রভু তোমার সঙ্গে আছেন, যিনি মিশর দেশ থেকে তোমাকে নিয়ে এসেছেন।
2 And it shall be, when ye draw nigh unto the battle, that the priest shall approach and speak unto the people,
২আর তোমরা যখন যুদ্ধের জন্যে কাছাকাছি আসবে, তখন যাজক আসবে এবং লোকদের কাছে বলবে,
3 and shall say unto them: 'Hear, O Israel, ye draw nigh this day unto battle against your enemies; let not your heart faint; fear not, nor be alarmed, neither be ye affrighted at them;
৩তাদেরকে বলবে, “হে ইস্রায়েল, শোনো, তোমরা আজ তোমাদের শত্রুদের সঙ্গে যুদ্ধ করতে কাছে যাচ্ছ; তোমাদের হৃদয় দুর্বল না হোক; ভয় কর না, কেঁপে যেও না বা ওদের থেকে ভয় পেও না।
4 for the LORD your God is He that goeth with you, to fight for you against your enemies, to save you.'
৪কারণ সদাপ্রভু তোমাদের ঈশ্বর যিনি সঙ্গে যাচ্ছেন তোমাদের জন্য শত্রুদের সঙ্গে যুদ্ধ করতে এবং তোমাদের উদ্ধার করতে তোমাদের সঙ্গে সঙ্গে যাচ্ছেন।”
5 And the officers shall speak unto the people, saying: 'What man is there that hath built a new house, and hath not dedicated it? let him go and return to his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man dedicate it.
৫পরে অধ্যক্ষরা লোকদেরকে এই কথা বলবে, “তোমাদের মধ্যে কে নতুন বাড়ি তৈরী করে তার প্রতিষ্ঠা করে নি? সে যুদ্ধে মারা গেলে পাছে অন্য লোক তার প্রতিষ্ঠা করে, এই জন্য সে নিজের বাড়ি ফিরে যাক।
6 And what man is there that hath planted a vineyard, and hath not used the fruit thereof? let him go and return unto his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man use the fruit thereof.
৬আর কে আঙ্গুর ক্ষেত তৈরী করে তার ফল ভোগ করে নি? সে যুদ্ধে মারা গেলে পাছে অন্য লোক তার ফল ভোগ করে, এই জন্য সে নিজের বাড়ি ফিরে যাক।
7 And what man is there that hath betrothed a wife, and hath not taken her? let him go and return unto his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man take her.'
৭আর বাগ্দান হলেও কে বিয়ে করে নি? সে যুদ্ধে মারা গেলে পাছে অন্য লোক সেই মেয়েকে বিয়ে করে, এই জন্য সে নিজের বাড়ি ফিরে যাক।”
8 And the officers shall speak further unto the people, and they shall say: 'What man is there that is fearful and faint-hearted? let him go and return unto his house, lest his brethren's heart melt as his heart.'
৮অধ্যক্ষরা লোকদের কাছে আরও কথা বলবে, তারা বলবে, “ভীত ও দুর্বলহৃদয় লোক কে আছে? সে নিজের বাড়ি ফিরে যাক, পাছে তার হৃদয়ের মতো তার ভাইদের হৃদয় গলে যায়।”
9 And it shall be, when the officers have made an end of speaking unto the people, that captains of hosts shall be appointed at the head of the people.
৯পরে অধ্যক্ষরা লোকদের কাছে কথা শেষ করলে তারা লোকদের ওপরে সেনাপতিদেরকে নিযুক্ত করবে।
10 When thou drawest nigh unto a city to fight against it, then proclaim peace unto it.
১০যখন তুমি কোনো শহরের বিরুদ্ধে যুদ্ধ করতে তার কাছে আসবে, তখন তার কাছে সন্ধির কথা ঘোষণা করবে।
11 And it shall be, if it make thee answer of peace, and open unto thee, then it shall be, that all the people that are found therein shall become tributary unto thee, and shall serve thee.
১১তাতে যদি সে সন্ধি করতে রাজি হয়ে তোমার জন্য দরজা খুলে দেয়, তবে সেই শহরে যে সব লোক পাওয়া যায়, তারা তোমার দাস হবে এবং সেবা করবে।
12 And if it will make no peace with thee, but will make war against thee, then thou shalt besiege it.
১২কিন্তু যদি সে সন্ধি না করে তোমার সঙ্গে যুদ্ধ করে, তবে তুমি সেই শহর অবরোধ করবে।
13 And when the LORD thy God delivereth it into thy hand, thou shalt smite every male thereof with the edge of the sword;
১৩পরে তোমার সদাপ্রভু খড়্গ তোমার হাতে দিলে তুমি তার সব লোককে মেরে ফেলবে,
14 but the women, and the little ones, and the cattle, and all that is in the city, even all the spoil thereof, shalt thou take for a prey unto thyself; and thou shalt eat the spoil of thine enemies, which the LORD thy God hath given thee.
১৪কিন্তু স্ত্রীলোক, বালকবালিকা ও পশুরা প্রভৃতি শহরের সর্বস্ব, সব লুটের জিনিস নিজের জন্য লুট হিসাবে গ্রহণ করবে, আর তোমার ঈশ্বর সদাপ্রভুর দেওয়া শত্রুদের লুট ভোগ করবে।
15 Thus shalt thou do unto all the cities which are very far off from thee, which are not of the cities of these nations.
১৫এই কাছাকাছি জাতিদের শহর ছাড়া যে সব শহর তোমার থেকে অনেক দূরে আছে, তাদেরই প্রতি এরকম করবে।
16 Howbeit of the cities of these peoples, that the LORD thy God giveth thee for an inheritance, thou shalt save alive nothing that breatheth,
১৬কিন্তু এই জাতিদের যে সব শহর তোমার ঈশ্বর সদাপ্রভু অধিকারের জন্যে তোমাকে দেবেন, সেই সবের মধ্যে নিঃশ্বাস নেওয়ার মতো কাউকে বাঁচিয়ে রাখবে না;
17 but thou shalt utterly destroy them: the Hittite, and the Amorite, the Canaanite, and the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite; as the LORD thy God hath commanded thee;
১৭তুমি নিজের ঈশ্বর সদাপ্রভুর আদেশ অনুসারে তাদেরকে, হিত্তীয়, ইমোরীয়, কনানীয়, পরিষীয়, হিব্বীয় ও যিবূষীয়দেরকে সম্পূর্ণ ধ্বংস করবে;
18 that they teach you not to do after all their abominations, which they have done unto their gods, and so ye sin against the LORD your God.
১৮সুতরাং তারা নিজেদের দেবতাদের উদ্দেশ্যে যে সব ঘৃণার্হ কাজ করে, সেরকম করতে তোমাদেরকেও শেখায়, আর যদি তোমরা তোমাদের ঈশ্বর সদাপ্রভুর বিরুদ্ধে পাপ কর।
19 When thou shalt besiege a city a long time, in making war against it to take it, thou shalt not destroy the trees thereof by wielding an axe against them; for thou mayest eat of them, but thou shalt not cut them down; for is the tree of the field man, that it should be besieged of thee?
১৯যখন তুমি কোনো শহর অধিকার করার জন্যে যুদ্ধ করে অনেক দিন পর্যন্ত তা অবরোধ কর, তখন কুড়াল দিয়ে সেখানকার গাছ কাটবে না; কারণ তুমি তার ফল খেতে পার, সুতরাং সেগুলি কাটবে না; কারণ ক্ষেত্রের গাছ কি মানুষ যে, তাও তোমার অবরোধের যোগ্য হবে?
20 Only the trees of which thou knowest that they are not trees for food, them thou mayest destroy and cut down, that thou mayest build bulwarks against the city that maketh war with thee, until it fall.
২০তুমি যে সব গাছগুলির বিষয়ে জানো সেগুলি থেকে খাদ্য জন্মায় না, সে সব তুমি নষ্ট করতে ও কাটতে পারবে এবং তোমার সঙ্গে যুদ্ধকারী শহর যতক্ষণ না পড়ে যায়, ততক্ষণ সেই শহরের বিরুদ্ধে দাঙ্গা বাঁধতে পারবে।
