Deuteronomy 19
1 When the LORD thy God shall cut off the nations, whose land the LORD thy God giveth thee, and thou dost succeed them, and dwell in their cities, and in their houses;
Lorsque Yahweh, ton Dieu, aura exterminé les nations dont Yahweh, ton Dieu, te donne le pays; lorsque tu les auras chassées et que tu habiteras dans leurs villes et dans leurs maisons,
2 thou shalt separate three cities for thee in the midst of thy land, which the LORD thy GOD giveth thee to possess it.
tu sépareras trois villes au milieu du pays que Yahweh, ton Dieu, te donne pour le posséder.
3 Thou shalt prepare thee the way, and divide the borders of thy land, which the LORD thy God causeth thee to inherit, into three parts, that every manslayer may flee thither.
Tu tiendras en état les routes qui y conduisent, et tu diviseras en trois parties le territoire du pays que Yahweh, ton Dieu, va te donner en héritage, afin que tout meurtrier puisse s’enfuir dans ces villes.
4 And this is the case of the manslayer, that shall flee thither and live: whoso killeth his neighbour unawares, and hated him not in time past;
Voici dans quel cas le meurtrier qui s’y réfugiera aura la vie sauve: s’il a tué son prochain par mégarde, sans avoir été auparavant son ennemi.
5 as when a man goeth into the forest with his neighbour to hew wood, and his hand fetcheth a stroke with the axe to cut down the tree, and the head slippeth from the helve, and lighteth upon his neighbour, that he die; he shall flee unto one of these cities and live;
Ainsi un homme va couper du bois dans la forêt avec un autre homme; sa main brandit la hache pour abattre un arbre; le fer s’échappe du manche, atteint son compagnon et le tue: cet homme s’enfuira dans l’une de ces villes et il aura la vie sauve.
6 lest the avenger of blood pursue the manslayer, while his heart is hot, and overtake him, because the way is long, and smite him mortally; whereas he was not deserving of death, inasmuch as he hated him not in time past.
Autrement le vengeur du sang, poursuivant le meurtrier dans l’ardeur de sa colère, l’atteindrait, si le chemin était trop long, et lui porterait un coup mortel; et pourtant cet homme n’aurait pas mérité la mort, puisqu’il n’avait pas auparavant de haine contre la victime.
7 Wherefore I command thee, saying: 'Thou shalt separate three cities for thee.'
C’est pourquoi je te donne cet ordre: Mets à part trois villes.
8 And if the LORD thy God enlarge thy border, as He hath sworn unto thy fathers, and give thee all the land which He promised to give unto thy fathers —
Et si Yahweh, ton Dieu, élargit tes frontières, comme il l’a juré à tes pères, et qu’il te donne tout le pays qu’il a promis à tes pères de te donner,
9 if thou shalt keep all this commandment to do it, which I command thee this day, to love the LORD thy God, and to walk ever in His ways — then shalt thou add three cities more for thee, beside these three;
— pourvu que tu observes et mettes en pratique tous ces commandements que je te prescris aujourd’hui, aimant Yahweh, ton Dieu, et marchant toujours dans ses voies, — tu ajouteras encore trois villes à ces trois-là,
10 that innocent blood be not shed in the midst of thy land, which the LORD thy God giveth thee for an inheritance, and so blood be upon thee.
afin que le sang innocent ne soit pas versé au milieu du pays que Yahweh, ton Dieu, te donne pour héritage, et qu’il n’y ait pas de sang sur toi.
11 But if any man hate his neighbour, and lie in wait for him, and rise up against him, and smite him mortally that he die; and he flee into one of these cities;
Mais si un homme ayant de la haine contre son prochain, lui dresse des embûches, se jette sur lui et lui porte un coup mortel, et qu’ensuite il s’enfuie dans l’une de ces villes,
12 then the elders of his city shall send and fetch him thence, and deliver him into the hand of the avenger of blood, that he may die.
les anciens de sa ville l’enverront saisir et le livreront entre les mains du vengeur du sang, afin qu’il meure.
13 Thine eye shall not pity him, but thou shalt put away the blood of the innocent from Israel, that it may go well with thee.
Ton œil n’aura pas de pitié pour lui, et tu ôteras d’Israël le sang innocent, et tu prospéreras.
14 Thou shalt not remove thy neighbour's landmark, which they of old time have set, in thine inheritance which thou shalt inherit, in the land that the LORD thy God giveth thee to possess it.
Tu ne déplaceras pas la borne de ton prochain, posée par les ancêtres, dans l’héritage que tu auras au pays que Yahweh, ton Dieu, te donne pour le posséder.
15 One witness shall not rise up against a man for any iniquity, or for any sin, in any sin that he sinneth; at the mouth of two witnesses, or at the mouth of three witnesses, shall a matter be establishment
Un seul témoin ne sera pas admis contre un homme pour constater un crime ou un péché, quel que soit le péché commis. C’est sur la parole de deux témoins ou sur la parole de trois témoins que la chose sera établie.
16 If an unrighteous witness rise up against any man to bear perverted witness against him;
Lorsqu’un témoin à charge s’élèvera contre un homme pour l’accuser d’un crime,
17 then both the men, between whom the controversy is, shall stand before the LORD, before the priests and the judges that shall be in those days.
les deux hommes en contestation se présenteront devant Yahweh, devant les prêtres et les juges alors en fonction;
18 And the judges shall inquire diligently; and, behold, if the witness be a false witness, and hath testified falsely against his brother;
les juges feront avec soin une enquête et, si le témoin se trouve être un faux témoin, s’il a fait contre son frère une fausse déposition,
19 then shall ye do unto him, as he had purposed to do unto his brother; so shalt thou put away the evil from the midst of thee.
vous lui ferez subir ce qu’il avait dessein de faire subir à son frère. Tu ôteras ainsi le mal du milieu de toi.
20 And those that remain shall hear, and fear, and shall henceforth commit no more any such evil in the midst of thee.
Les autres, en l’apprenant craindront, et l’on ne commettra plus un acte aussi mauvais au milieu de toi.
21 And thine eye shall not pity: life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot.
Ton œil sera sans pitié: vie pour vie, œil pour œil, dent pour dent, main pour main, pied pour pied.
