Daniel 5
1 Belshazzar the king made a great feast to a thousand of his lords, and drank wine before the thousand.
Le roi Baltassar fit un grand destin à mille de ses grands, et chacun buvait selon son âge.
2 Belshazzar, while he tasted the wine, commanded to bring the golden and silver vessels which Nebuchadnezzar his father had taken out of the temple which was in Jerusalem; that the king and his lords, his consorts and his concubines, might drink therein.
Il ordonna donc, étant déjà ivre, qu’on apportât les vases d’or et d’argent que Nabuchodonosor son père avait emportés du temple qui fut à Jérusalem, afin que le roi, et ses grands, et ses épouses, et ses concubines y bussent.
3 Then they brought the golden vessels that were taken out of the temple of the house of God which was at Jerusalem; and the king, and his lords, his consorts and his concubines, drank in them.
Alors furent apportés les vases d’or et d’argent, qu’il avait transportés du temple qui avait été à Jérusalem; et le roi, et ses grands, et ses épouses et ses concubines y burent.
4 They drank wine, and praised the gods of gold, and of silver, of brass, of iron, of wood, and of stone.
Ils buvaient du vin, et louaient leurs dieux d’or, et d’argent, et d’airain, et de fer, et de bois, et de pierre.
5 In the same hour came forth fingers of a man's hand, and wrote over against the candlestick upon the plaster of the wall of the king's palace; and the king saw the palm of the hand that wrote.
À la même heure apparurent des doigts, comme d’une main d’homme écrivant vis-à-vis du candélabre, sur la surface de la muraille du palais du roi, et le roi regardait les doigts de la main qui écrivait.
6 Then the king's countenance was changed in him, and his thoughts affrighted him; and the joints of his loins were loosed, and his knees smote one against another.
Alors le visage du roi changea, et ses pensées le troublaient; et les jointures de ses reins se brisaient, et ses genoux se heurtaient l’un contre l’autre.
7 The king cried aloud to bring in the enchanters, the Chaldeans, and the astrologers. The king spoke and said to the wise men of Babylon: 'Whosoever shall read this writing, and declare unto me the interpretation thereof, shall be clothed with purple, and have a chain of gold about his neck, and shall rule as one of three in the kingdom.'
C’est pourquoi le roi s’écria d’une voix forte qu’on introduisît les mages, les Chaldéens et les augures. Et élevant la voix, le roi dit aux sages de Babylone: Quiconque lira cette écriture et m’en donnera une interprétation manifeste sera revêtu de pourpre, et aura un collier d’or au cou, et sera le troisième dans mon royaume.
8 Then came in all the king's wise men: but they could not read the writing, nor make known to the king the interpretation.
Alors tous les sages du roi entrèrent, et ils ne purent lire l’écriture, ni en donner l’interprétation au roi.
9 Then was king Belshazzar greatly affrighted, and his countenance was changed in him, and his lords were perplexed.
D’où le roi Baltassar fut extrêmement troublé, et son visage changea, mais ses grands aussi étaient troublés.
10 Now the queen by reason of the words of the king and his lords came into the banquet house; the queen spoke and said: 'O king, live for ever! let not thy thoughts affright thee, nor let thy countenance be changed;
Or la reine, à cause de ce qui était arrivé au roi et à ses grands, entra dans la maison du festin, et, élevant la voix, elle dit: Roi, vivez à jamais, que vos pensées ne vous troublent pas, et que votre visage ne change point.
11 there is a man in thy kingdom, in whom is the spirit of the holy gods; and in the days of thy father light and understanding and wisdom, like the wisdom of the gods, was found in him; and the king Nebuchadnezzar thy father, the king, I say, thy father, made him master of the magicians, enchanters, Chaldeans, and astrologers;
Il est un homme dans votre royaume qui a en lui-même l’esprit des dieux saints; et durant les jours de votre père, la science et la sagesse furent trouvées en lui; car même Nabuchodonosor votre père l’établit prince des mages, des enchanteurs, des Chaldéens et des augures; votre père, dis-je, ô roi;
12 forasmuch as a surpassing spirit, and knowledge, and understanding, interpreting of dreams, and declaring of riddles, and loosing of knots, were found in the same Daniel, whom the king named Belteshazzar. Now let Daniel be called, and he will declare the interpretation.'
Parce qu’un esprit plus étendu, et la prudence, et l’intelligence, et l’interprétation des songes, et la manifestation des secrets, et le dénoûment des choses liées furent trouvés en lui, c’est-à-dire en Daniel, à qui le roi donna le nom de Baltassar. Maintenant donc que Daniel soit appelé, et il donnera l’interprétation.
13 Then was Daniel brought in before the king. The king spoke and said unto Daniel: 'Art thou Daniel, who is of the children of the captivity of Judah, whom the king my father brought out of Judah?
Ainsi Daniel fut introduit devant le roi. Le roi, s’étant adressé d’abord à lui, dit: Es-tu Daniel, un des fils de la captivité de Juda, que le roi mon père a amenés de Judée?
14 I have heard of thee, that the spirit of the gods is in thee, and that light and understanding and surpassing wisdom is found in thee.
J’ai ouï dire de toi que tu as l’esprit des dieux, et qu’une science, et une intelligence, et une sagesse plus étendues ont été trouvées en toi.
15 And now the wise men, the enchanters, have been brought in before me, that they should read this writing, and make known unto me the interpretation thereof; but they could not declare the interpretation of the thing.
Et maintenant ont été introduits en ma présence les mages remplis de sagesse, afin de lire cette écriture, et de m’en donner l’interprétation; et ils n’ont pu dire le sens de ces paroles.
16 But I have heard of thee, that thou canst give interpretations, and loose knots; now if thou canst read the writing, and make known to me the interpretation thereof, thou shalt be clothed with purple, and have a chain of gold about thy neck, and shalt rule as one of three in the kingdom.'
Mais moi j’ai ouï dire de toi que tu peux interpréter les choses obscures, et délier les choses liées; si donc tu peux lire cette écriture et m’en donner l’interprétation, tu seras vêtu de pourpre, tu auras un collier d’or autour de ton cou, et tu seras le troisième prince dans royaume.
17 Then Daniel answered and said before the king: 'Let thy gifts be to thyself, and give thy rewards to another; nevertheless I will read the writing unto the king, and make known to him the interpretation.
À quoi répondant Daniel, il dit devant le roi: Que vos présents soient pour vous, et donnez les dons de votre maison à un autre; mais je vous lirai l’écriture, ô roi, et je vous montrerai son interprétation.
18 O thou king, God Most High gave Nebuchadnezzar thy father the kingdom, and greatness, and glory, and majesty;
Ô roi, le Dieu Très-Haut donna le royaume et la magnificence, la gloire et l’honneur, à Nabuchodonosor votre père.
19 and because of the greatness that He gave him, all the peoples, nations, and languages trembled and feared before him: whom he would he slew, and whom he would he kept alive; and whom he would he raised up, and whom he would he put down.
Et à cause de la magnificence qu’il lui avait donnée, tous les peuples, les tribus, les langues tremblaient et le craignaient; et il tuait ceux qu’il voulait, et il frappait ceux qu’il voulait, et il exaltait ceux qu’il voulait, et il humiliait ceux qu’il voulait.
20 But when his heart was lifted up, and his spirit was hardened that he dealt proudly, he was deposed from his kingly throne, and his glory was taken from him;
Mais, quand son cœur se fut élevé, et que son esprit se fut affermi dans l’orgueil, il fut dépose du trône, et sa gloire lui fut ôtée.
21 and he was driven from the sons of men, and his heart was made like the beasts, and his dwelling was with the wild asses; he was fed with grass like oxen, and his body was wet with the dew of heaven; until he knew that God Most High ruleth in the kingdom of men, and that He setteth up over it whomsoever He will.
Et il fut chassé loin des fils des hommes; mais même son cœur fut mis avec les bêtes, et avec les onagres était sa demeure; il mangeait aussi du foin comme le bœuf, et de la rosée du ciel son corps fut couvert, jusqu’à ce qu’il reconnût que le Très-Haut a pouvoir sur le royaume des hommes, et qu’il y élève celui qu’il veut.
22 And thou his son, O Belshazzar, hast not humbled thy heart, though thou knewest all this;
Vous aussi, son fils Baltassar, vous n’avez pas humilié votre cœur, lorsque vous saviez toutes ces choses;
23 but hast lifted up thyself against the Lord of heaven; and they have brought the vessels of His house before thee, and thou and thy lords, thy consorts and thy concubines, have drunk wine in them; and thou hast praised the gods of silver, and gold, of brass, iron, wood, and stone, which see not, nor hear, nor know; and the God in whose hand thy breath is, and whose are all thy ways, hast thou not glorified;
Mais contre le dominateur du ciel vous vous êtes élevé; et les vases de sa maison ont été apportés devant vous; et vous, et vos grands, et vos épouses, et vos concubines, y avez bu du vin; et vous avez loué les dieux d’argent, et d’or, et d’airain, et de fer, et de bois, et de pierre, qui ne voient point, qui n’entendent point, qui ne sentent point; mais le Dieu qui a en sa main votre souffle et toutes vos voies, vous ne l’avez pas glorifié.
24 then was the palm of the hand sent from before Him, and this writing was inscribed.
C’est pour cela qu’a été envoyé par lui le doigt de la main qui a écrit ce qui est tracé.
25 And this is the writing that was inscribed: MENE MENE, TEKEL UPHARSIN.
Or voici l’écriture qui a été tracée: MANÉ, THÉCEL, PHARÈS.
26 This is the interpretation of the thing: MENE, God hath numbered thy kingdom, and brought it to an end.
Et voici l’interprétation de ces paroles: MANÉ: Dieu a compté les jours de votre règne, et il y a mis fin.
27 TEKEL, Thou art weighed in the balances, and art found wanting.
THÉCEL: Vous avez été pesé dans la balance, et vous avez été trouvé ayant trop peu de poids.
28 PERES, thy kingdom is divided, and given to the Medes and Persians.'
PHARÈS: Votre royaume a été divisé, et il a été donné aux Mèdes et aux Perses.
29 Then commanded Belshazzar, and they clothed Daniel with purple, and put a chain of gold about his neck, and made proclamation concerning him, that he should rule as one of three in the kingdom.
Alors, le roi ordonnant, Daniel fut vêtu de pourpre, et un collier d’or fut mis autour de son cou, et on publia à son sujet qu’il serait le troisième ayant la puissance dans son royaume.
30 In that night Belshazzar the Chaldean king was slain.
Dans la même nuit, fut tué Baltassar, roi de Chaldée.
31 And Darius the Mede received the kingdom, being about threescore and two years old.
Et Darius le Mède lui succéda au royaume, étant âgé de soixante-deux ans.
