2 Samuel 1

1 AND IT came to pass after the death of Saul, when David was returned from the slaughter of the Amalekites, and David had abode two days in Ziklag;

Après la mort de Saül, David, qui venait de battre les Amalécites, resta deux jours à Ciklag.

2 it came even to pass on the third day, that, behold, a man came out of the camp from Saul with his clothes rent, and earth upon his head; and so it was, when he came to David, that he fell to the earth, and prostrated himself.

Le troisième jour, on vit un homme venir du camp de Saül, les vêtements déchirés, la tête couverte de poussière. En arrivant auprès de David, il se jeta à terre et se prosterna.

3 And David said unto him: 'From whence comest thou?' And he said unto him: 'Out of the camp of Israel am I escaped.'

"D’Où viens-tu?" lui demanda David. Il lui répondit: "Du camp d’Israël, d’où je me suis échappé.

4 And David said unto him: 'How went the matter? I pray thee, tell me.' And he answered: 'The people are fled from the battle, and many of the people also are fallen and dead; and Saul and Jonathan his son are dead also.'

Que s’est-il passé? dit David, raconte-le moi." Il raconta que le peuple avait fui du champ de bataille, qu’il en était mort un grand nombre, que Saül et son fils Jonathan avaient également péri.

5 And David said unto the young man that told him: 'How knowest thou that Saul and Jonathan his son are dead?'

David dit au jeune homme qui l’avait renseigné: "Comment sais-tu que Saül et son fils Jonathan sont morts?"

6 And the young man that told him said: 'As I happened by chance upon mount Gilboa, behold, Saul leaned upon his spear; and, lo, the chariots and the horsemen pressed hard upon him.

Le jeune homme qui apportait les nouvelles lui répondit: "Me trouvant par hasard sur le mont Ghelboé, j’ai vu Saül appuyé sur sa lance; déjà les chars et les cavaliers l’avaient atteint.

7 And when he looked behind him, he saw me, and called unto me. And I answered: Here am I.

En se retournant, il m’aperçut et m’appela. Je répondis: Me voici.

8 And he said unto me: Who art thou? And I answered him: I am an Amalekite.

Il me dit: "Qui es-tu? Un Amalécite, répondis-je.

9 And he said unto me: Stand, I pray thee, beside me, and slay me, for the agony hath taken hold of me; because my life is just yet in me.

Eh bien, dit-il, place-toi auprès de moi et donne-moi la mort, car les affres m’ont saisi, bien que ma vie soit encore intacte."

10 So I stood beside him, and slew him, because I was sure that he could not live after that he was fallen; and I took the crown that was upon his head, and the bracelet that was on his arm, and have brought them hither unto my lord.'

Je m’approchai de lui et le tuai, car je savais qu’il ne survivrait pas à sa chute. Puis je pris le diadème qui ceignait sa tête et le bracelet qui ornait son bras, et je les apporte ici à mon seigneur."

11 Then David took hold on his clothes, and rent them; and likewise all the men that were with him.

Alors David saisit ses vêtements et les déchira, et ainsi firent tous ceux qui étaient avec lui.

12 And they wailed, and wept, and fasted until even, for Saul, and for Jonathan his son, and for the people of the LORD, and for the house of Israel; because they were fallen by the sword.

Ils manifestèrent leur deuil, pleurèrent et jeûnèrent jusqu’au soir à cause de Saül et de Jonathan, son fils, du peuple de Dieu et de la maison d’Israël, qui avaient succombé sous le glaive.

13 And David said unto the young man that told him: 'Whence art thou?' And he answered: 'I am the son of an Amalekite stranger.'

David dit encore au jeune homme qui lui avait fait le récit: "D’Où es-tu?" Il répondit: "Je suis fils d’un étranger, d’un Amalécite.

14 And David said unto him: 'How wast thou not afraid to put forth thy hand to destroy the LORD'S anointed?'

Comment, lui dit David, n’as-tu pas craint de lever la main pour faire périr l’oint du Seigneur?"

15 And David called one of the young men, and said: 'Go near, and fall upon him.' And he smote him that he died.

Puis David appela un des serviteurs et lui dit: "Approche, jette-toi sur lui!" Le serviteur le frappa à mort.

16 And David said unto him: 'Thy blood be upon thy head; for thy mouth hath testified against thee, saying: I have slain the LORD'S anointed.'

Et David lui dit: "Ton sang retombe sur ta tête! Car ta propre bouche a déposé contre toi lorsque tu as dit: C’Est moi qui ai fait mourir l’oint du Seigneur."

17 And David lamented with this lamentation over Saul and over Jonathan his son,

David composa cette élégie sur Saül et son fils Jonathan,

18 and said — To teach the sons of Judah the bow. Behold, it is written in the book of Jashar:

et décida qu’on enseignerait aux fils de Juda le chant de l’Arc, qui est consigné dans le livre de Yachar:

19 Thy beauty, O Israel, upon thy high places is slain! How are the mighty fallen!

"Oh! L’Orgueil d’Israël! Le voilà gisant sur les hauteurs! Comme ils sont tombés, les vaillants!

20 Tell it not in Gath, publish it not in the streets of Ashkelon; lest the daughters of the Philistines rejoice, lest the daughters of the uncircumcised triumph.

Ne l’allez pas dire à Gath, ne le publiez pas dans les rues d’Ascalon; elles pourraient s’en réjouir, les filles des Philistins, elles en triompheraient, les filles des impurs!

21 Ye mountains of Gilboa, let there be no dew nor rain upon you, neither fields of choice fruits; for there the shield of the mighty was vilely cast away, the shield of Saul, not anointed with oil.

Montagnes de Ghelboé, plus de rosée, plus de pluie sur vous, plus de campagnes riches en offrande! Car là fut déshonoré le bouclier des forts, le bouclier de Saül, qui plus jamais ne sera oint d’huile!

22 From the blood of the slain, from the fat of the mighty, the bow of Jonathan turned not back, and the sword of Saul returned not empty.

Devant le sang des blessés, devant la graisse des guerriers, l’arc de Jonathan ne reculait point, ni l’épée de Saül ne revenait à vide.

23 Saul and Jonathan, the lovely and the pleasant in their lives, even in their death they were not divided; they were swifter than eagles, they were stronger than lions.

Saül et Jonathan, chéris et aimables durant leur vie, n’ont pas été séparés par la mort; plus prompts que les aigles, plus courageux que les lions!

24 Ye daughters of Israel, weep over Saul, who clothed you in scarlet, with other delights, who put ornaments of gold upon your apparel.

Filles d’Israël, pleurez Saül, qui vous habillait richement de pourpre, qui ajoutait des joyaux d’or à votre parure!

25 How are the mighty fallen in the midst of the battle! Jonathan upon thy high places is slain!

Comme ils sont tombés, les vaillants, en plein combat; tombé mort, Jonathan, sur tes hauteurs!

26 I am distressed for thee, my brother Jonathan; very pleasant hast thou been unto me; wonderful was thy love to me, passing the love of women.

Jonathan, mon frère, ta perte m’accable, tu m’étais si cher! Ton affection m’était précieuse plus que l’amour des femmes…

27 How are the mighty fallen, and the weapons of war perished!

Comme ils sont tombés, ces vaillants, et perdues, ces armes de guerre!"
