2 Chronicles 18

1 Now Jehoshaphat had riches and honour in abundance; and he allied himself with Ahab by marriage.

Et Josaphat avait en abondance richesse et gloire, et il s'allia à Achab.

2 And after a lapse of years he went down to Ahab to Samaria. And Ahab killed sheep and oxen for him in abundance, and for the people that were with him, and persuaded him to go up with him to Ramoth-gilead.

Et au bout de quelques années il descendit chez Achab à Samarie, et Achab tua pour lui nombre de moutons et des bœufs, ainsi que pour les gens de sa suite et l'invita à marcher contre Ramoth en Galaad.

3 And Ahab king of Israel said unto Jehoshaphat king of Judah: 'Wilt thou go with me to Ramoth-gilead?' And he answered him: 'I am as thou art, and my people as thy people; and we will be with thee in the war.'

Et Achab, roi d'Israël, dit à Josaphat, roi de Juda: Veux-tu marcher avec moi contre Ramoth en Galaad? Et il lui répondit: Nous serons de pair moi et toi, et ton peuple et mon peuple, et avec toi j'irai en guerre.

4 And Jehoshaphat said unto the king of Israel: 'Inquire, I pray thee, at the word of the LORD today.'

Et Josaphat dit au roi d'Israël: Qu'il te plaise requérir aujourd'hui la parole de l'Éternel!

5 Then the king of Israel gathered the prophets together, four hundred men, and said unto them: 'Shall we go to Ramoth-gilead to battle, or shall I forbear?' And they said: 'Go up; for God will deliver it into the hand of the king.'

Et le roi d'Israël réunit les prophètes au nombre de quatre cents hommes, et leur dit: Marcherons-nous à l'attaque de Ramoth en Galaad? ou y renoncerai-je? Et ils dirent: Marche! et Dieu la livrera aux mains du roi.

6 But Jehoshaphat said: 'Is there not here besides a prophet of the LORD, that we might inquire of him?'

Et Josaphat dit: N'y a-t-il point encore ici de prophète de l'Éternel, par qui nous puissions consulter?

7 And the king of Israel said unto Jehoshaphat: 'There is yet one man by whom we may inquire of the LORD; but I hate him; for he never prophesieth good concerning me, but always evil; the same is Micaiah the son of Imla.' And Jehoshaphat said: 'Let not the king say so.'

Et le roi d'Israël dit à Josaphat: Il y a encore un homme par qui nous pourrions consulter l'Éternel; mais je le hais parce que pour moi il ne prophétise jamais en bien, mais toujours en mal; c'est Michée, fils de Jimla. Et Josaphat dit: Que le roi ne parle pas de la sorte!

8 Then the king of Israel called an officer, and said: 'Fetch quickly Micaiah the son of Imla.'

Alors le roi d'Israël appela un eunuque et lui dit: Fais vite venir Michée, fils de Jimla.

9 Now the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat the king of Judah sat each on his throne, arrayed in their robes, and they sat in a threshing-floor at the entrance of the gate of Samaria; and all the prophets were prophesying before them.

Cependant le roi d'Israël et Josaphat, roi de Juda, étaient assis, chacun sur son trône, revêtus de leur costume, et se tenaient dans une aire aux abords de la porte de Samarie, et tous les prophètes prophétisaient devant eux.

10 And Zedekiah the son of Chenaanah made him horns of iron, and said: 'Thus saith the LORD: With these shalt thou gore the Arameans, until they be consumed.'

Et Sédécias, fils de Cnaana, se fit des cornes de fer et dit: Ainsi parle l'Éternel: Avec ceci tu heurteras les Syriens jusqu'à les achever.

11 And all the prophets prophesied so, saying: 'Go up to Ramoth-gilead, and prosper; for the LORD will deliver it into the hand of the king.'

Et tous les prophètes prophétisaient de même et disaient: Marche contre Ramoth en Galaad et tu viendras à bout d'elle, et l'Éternel la livrera aux mains du roi.

12 And the messenger that went to call Micaiah spoke to him, saying: 'Behold, the words of the prophets declare good to the king with one mouth; let thy word therefore, I pray thee, be like one of theirs, and speak thou good.'

Et le messager qui était allé quérir Michée, lui parla en ces termes: Voici, les discours des prophètes sont à l'unanimité favorables au roi, que ton discours soit donc comme celui de l'un d'eux, et parle favorablement.

13 And Micaiah said: 'As the LORD liveth, what my God saith, that will I speak.'

Et Michée dit: Par la vie de l'Éternel! ce que mon Dieu me dira, je le rendrai.

14 And when he was come to the king, the king said unto him: 'Micaiah, shall we go to Ramoth-gilead to battle, or shall I forbear?' And he said: 'Go ye up, and prosper; and they shall be delivered into your hand.'

Et quand il fut arrivé vers le roi, le roi lui dit: Michée, marcherons-nous à l'attaque de Ramoth en Galaad? ou y renoncerai-je? Et il répondit: Marchez!…, et vous réussirez…, et elle sera livrée à vos mains!

15 And the king said to him: 'How many times shall I adjure thee that thou speak unto me nothing but the truth in the name of the LORD.'

Et le roi lui dit: Combien de fois faut-il que je t'adjure ils de ne me dire que la vérité au nom de l'Éternel!

16 And he said: 'I saw all Israel scattered upon the mountains, as sheep that have no shepherd; and the LORD said: These have no master, let them return every man to his house in peace.'

Et il dit: J'ai vu tout Israël épars sur les montagnes comme un troupeau sans pasteur. Et l'Éternel dit: Ils sont sans maîtres! qu'ils retournent chacun dans sa maison en paix!

17 And the king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat: 'Did I not tell thee that he would not prophesy good concerning me, but evil?'

Alors le roi d'Israël dit à Josaphat: Ne te l'ai-je pas dit? pour moi il ne prophétise pas en bien, mais en mal.

18 And he said: 'Therefore hear ye the word of the LORD: I saw the LORD sitting upon His throne, and all the host of heaven standing on His right hand and on His left.

Et il dit: En conséquence, écoutez la parole de l'Éternel: J'ai vu l'Éternel assis sur son trône, et toute l'armée des Cieux debout à sa droite et à sa gauche.

19 And the LORD said: who shall entice Ahab king of Israel, that he may go up and fall at Ramoth-gilead? And one spoke saying after this manner, and another saying after that manner.

Et l'Éternel dit: Qui veut suggérer à Achab, roi d'Israël, de marcher pour aller tomber à Ramoth en Galaad? Et l'un parla d'une manière, et l'autre d'une autre.

20 And there came forth the spirit, and stood before the LORD, and said: I will entice him. And the LORD said unto him: Wherewith?

Alors l'Esprit sortit et parut devant l'Éternel et dit: Moi, je le lui suggérerai.

21 And he said: I will go forth, and will be a lying spirit in the mouth of all his prophets. And He said: Thou shalt entice him, and shalt prevail also; go forth, and do so.

Et l'Éternel lui dit: Comment? Et il dit: Je partirai et serai esprit de mensonge dans la bouche de tous ses prophètes. Et il dit: Suggère! et emporte-le! pars et ainsi fais!

22 Now therefore, behold, the LORD hath put a lying spirit in the mouth of these thy prophets; and the LORD hath spoken evil concerning thee.'

Eh bien! voici, l'Éternel a mis un esprit de mensonge dans la bouche de ces tiens prophètes, et l'Éternel a prononcé sur toi la ruine.

23 Then Zedekiah the son of Chenaanah came near, and smote Micaiah upon the check, and said: 'Which way went the spirit of the LORD from me to speak unto thee?'

Alors Sédécias, fils de Cnaana, s'approcha et frappa Michée sur la joue et dit: Est-ce là la voie par où l'esprit de l'Éternel se serait retiré de moi pour communiquer avec toi?

24 And Micaiah said: 'Behold, thou shalt see on that day, when thou shalt go into an inner chamber to hide thyself.'

Et Michée dit: Voici tu le verras le jour même où tu iras de chambre en chambre pour te cacher.

25 And the king of Israel said: 'Take ye Micaiah; and carry him back unto Amon the governor of the city, and to Joash the king's son;

Et le roi d'Israël dit: Arrêtez Michée et le menez à Amon, préfet de la ville, et à Joas, fils du roi,

26 and say: Thus saith the king: Put this fellow in the prison, and feed him with scant bread and with scant water, until I return in peace.'

et dites: Ainsi parle le roi: Mettez cet homme en prison, et nourrissez-le de pain et d'eau de rigueur, jusqu'à ce que je revienne sain et sauf.

27 And Micaiah said: 'If thou return at all in peace, the LORD hath not spoken by me.' And he said: 'Hear, ye peoples, all of you.'

Et Michée dit: Si tu reviens sain et sauf, l'Éternel n'a pas parlé par moi. Et il dit: Entendez, vous tous les peuples!

28 So the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat the kind of Judah went up to Ramoth-gilead.

Et le roi d'Israël avec Josaphat, roi de Juda, marcha contre Ramoth en Galaad.

29 And the king of Israel said unto Jehoshaphat: 'I will disguise myself, and go into the battle; but put thou on thy robes.' So the king of Israel disguised himself; and they went into the battle.

Et le roi d'Israël dit à Josaphat: Je me travestirai pour aller au combat, mais toi, revêts-toi de ton costume. Le roi d'Israël se travestit donc, et ils vinrent au combat.

30 Now the king of Aram had commanded the captains of his chariots, saying: 'Fight neither with small nor great, save only with the king of Israel.'

Et le roi de Syrie avait donné cet ordre aux commandants de ses chars: N'attaquez personne, ni petit, ni grand, sinon le roi d'Israël seul.

31 And it came to pass, when the captains of the chariots saw Jehoshaphat, that they said: 'It is the king of Israel.' Therefore they turned about to fight against him; but Jehoshaphat cried out, and the LORD helped him; and God moved them to depart from him.

Et lorsque les commandants des chars virent Josaphat, ils se dirent: C'est le roi d'Israël! et ils appuyèrent de son côté pour l'attaquer. Alors Josaphat fit un cri, et l'Éternel le secourut, et Dieu les écarta de lui;

32 And it came to pass, when the captains of the chariots saw that it was not the king of Israel, that they turned back from pursuing him.

et lorsque les commandants des chars virent que ce n'était pas le roi d'Israël, ils revinrent de sa poursuite.

33 And a certain man drew his bow at a venture, and smote the king of Israel between the lower armour and the breastplate; wherefore he said to the driver of the chariot: 'Turn thy hand, and carry me out of the host; for I am sore wounded.'

Cependant un homme banda son arc tout innocemment, et atteignit le roi d'Israël entre les pendants de la cuirasse et la cotte d'armes. Et celui-ci dit à son cocher: Tourne et mène-moi hors de la mêlée, car je suis blessé.

34 And the battle increased that day; howbeit the king of Israel stayed himself up in his chariot against the Arameans until the even; and about the time of the going down of the sun he died.

Et la bataille était intense pendant cette journée, et le roi d'Israël resta debout sur son char en vue des Syriens jusqu'au soir, et il mourut au moment du coucher du soleil.
