1 Samuel 9
1 Now there was a man of Benjamin, whose name was Kish, the son of Abiel, the son of Zeror, the son of Becorath, the son of Aphiah, the son of a Benjamite, a mighty man of valour.
Et il y avait là un homme de Benjamin, nommé Kis, fils d'Abiel, fils de Teseror, fils de Bechorath, fils d'Aphia, fils d'un Benjaminite; c'était un brave guerrier.
2 And he had a son, whose name was Saul, young and goodly, and there was not among the children of Israel a goodlier person than he: from his shoulders and upward he was higher than any of the people.
Et il avait un fils, nommé Saül, homme d'élite et d'une belle figure; et il n'y en avait pas de plus beau parmi les enfants d'Israël, et des épaules en haut il dépassait tout le peuple.
3 Now the asses of Kish Saul's father were lost. And Kish said to Saul his son: 'Take now one of the servants with thee, and arise, go seek the asses.'
Et les ânesses de Kis, père de Saül, se perdirent; et Kis dit à Saül, son fils: Prends donc avec toi l'un des valets, et lève-toi et va à la recherche des ânesses.
4 And he passed through the hill-country of Ephraim, and passed through the land of Shalishah, but they found them not; then they passed through the land of Shaalim, and there they were not; and he passed through the land of the Benjamites, but they found them not.
Et il franchit les monts d'Ephraïm et traversa la contrée de Salisa ils ne les trouvèrent pas; et ils parcoururent la région de Saalim, et elles n'y étaient pas; et ils passèrent par le pays de Benjamin et ils ne les trouvèrent pas.
5 When they were come to the land of Zuph, Saul said to his servant that was with him: 'Come and let us return; lest my father leave caring for the asses, and become anxious concerning us.'
Ils arrivaient dans la contrée de Tsouph, lorsque Saül dit à son valet qui l'accompagnait: Viens et retournons, de peur que mon père, cessant de penser aux ânesses ne s'inquiète de nous!
6 And he said unto him: 'Behold now, there is in this city a man of God, and he is a man that is held in honour; all that he saith cometh surely to pass; now let us go thither; peradventure he can tell us concerning our journey whereon we go.'
Et le valet lui dit: Mais vois! il y a dans cette ville un homme de Dieu, et cet homme est considéré; tout ce qu'il annonce, arrive: dès-lors allons-y! peut-être nous éclaircira-t-il sur le voyage où nous sommes engagés.
7 Then said Saul to his servant: 'But, behold, if we go, what shall we bring the man? for the bread is spent in our vessels, and there is not a present to bring to the man of God; what have we?'
Et Saül dit à son valet: Mais! si nous allons, qu'offrirons-nous à l'homme [de Dieu]? Car il n'y a plus de provisions dans nos valises, et nous n'avons point de présent à offrir à l'homme de Dieu. Qu'avons-nous d'ailleurs avec nous?
8 And the servant answered Saul again, and said: 'Behold, I have in my hand the fourth part of a shekel of silver, that will I give to the man of God, to tell us our way.' —
Et reprenant la parole le valet dit à Saül: Voilà, il se trouve que j'ai en main un quart de sicle d'argent, et je le donnerai à l'homme de Dieu, pour qu'il nous indique notre route. (
9 Beforetime in Israel, when a man went to inquire of God, thus he said: 'Come and let us go to the seer'; for he that is now called a prophet was beforetime called a seer. —
Jadis en Israël, quand on allait consulter Dieu on disait: Venez et allons au Voyant; car autrefois on donnait au prophète d'aujourd'hui le nom de Voyant).
10 Then said Saul to his servant: 'Well said; come, let us go.' So they went unto the city where the man of God was.
Et Saül dit à son valet: Tu as raison, viens! allons! et ils gagnèrent la ville où était l'homme de Dieu.
11 As they went up the ascent to the city, they found young maidens going out to draw water, and said unto them: 'Is the seer here?'
Ils montaient la montée de la ville, lorsqu'ils rencontrèrent des jeunes filles sorties pour puiser de l'eau, et ils leur dirent: Le Voyant est-il ici?
12 And they answered them, and said: 'He is; behold, he is before thee; make haste now, for he is come to-day into the city; for the people have a sacrifice to-day in the high place.
Et elles leur répondirent et dirent: Oui, voilà qu'il te devance; hâtez-vous seulement, car aujourd'hui il est venu à la ville pour un sacrifice que le peuple fait sur le tertre.
13 As soon as ye are come into the city, ye shall straightway find him, before he go up to the high place to eat; for the people will not eat until he come, because he doth bless the sacrifice; and afterwards they eat that are bidden. Now therefore get you up; for at this time ye shall find him.'
Aussitôt entrés dans la ville vous le trouverez avant qu'il monte au tertre pour le banquet; car le peuple ne mangera pas avant qu'il soit venu, parce que c'est lui qui bénit le sacrifice; après quoi les conviés se mettent à table. Montez donc, car aujourd'hui vous le trouverez.
14 And they went up to the city; and as they came within the city, behold, Samuel came out toward them, to go up to the high place.
Et ils montèrent à la ville. Comme ils entraient dans l'intérieur de la ville, voilà que Samuel sortait au devant d'eux pour se rendre au tertre.
15 Now the LORD had revealed unto Samuel a day before Saul came, saying:
Or, un jour avant l'arrivée de Saül, l'Éternel avait fait à Samuel cette révélation:
16 'To-morrow about this time I will send thee a man out of the land of Benjamin, and thou shalt anoint him to be prince over My people Israel, and he shall save My people out of the hand of the Philistines; for I have looked upon My people, because their cry is come unto Me.'
A pareil moment demain je t'enverrai un homme du pays de Benjamin; sacre-le par l'onction Prince de mon peuple d'Israël, et il sauvera mon peuple des mains des Philistins, parce que j'ai regardé mon peuple, car ses cris sont venus jusqu'à moi.
17 And when Samuel saw Saul, the LORD spoke unto him: 'Behold the man of whom I said unto thee: This same shall have authority over My people.'
Et lorsque Samuel aperçut Saül, l'Éternel prévint Samuel en disant: Voici l'homme duquel je t'ai dit: Il aura le commandement de mon peuple.
18 Then Saul drew near to Samuel in the gate, and said: 'Tell me, I pray thee, where the seer's house is.'
Et Saül aborda Samuel dans l'intérieur de la Porte, et dit: Indique moi je te prie, où est la maison du Voyant!
19 And Samuel answered Saul, and said: 'I am the seer; go up before me unto the high place, for ye shall eat with me to-day; and in the morning I will let thee go, and will tell thee all that is in thy heart.
Et Samuel répondit à Saül et dit: Je suis moi-même le Voyant; précède-moi au tertre, et aujourd'hui vous prendrez part au banquet avec moi, et demain je te laisserai partir; et je te découvrirai tout ce que tu as dans le cœur.
20 And as for thine asses that were lost three days ago, set not thy mind on them; for they are found. And on whom is all the desire of Israel? Is it not on thee, and on all thy father's house?'
Et quant aux ânesses perdues pour toi depuis trois jours, ne t'en inquiètes pas, car elles sont retrouvées. Et à qui sera tout ce qu'Israël a de cher, sinon à toi et à toute la maison de ton père?
21 And Saul answered and said: 'Am not I a Benjamite, of the smallest of the tribes of Israel? and my family the least of all the families of the tribe of Benjamin? wherefore then speakest thou to me after this manner?'
Et Saül répondit et dit: Ne suis-je pas un Benjaminite, de l'une des plus petites des Tribus d'Israël, et ma famille n'est-elle pas la moindre des familles de la Tribu de Benjamin? et pourquoi me tiens tu un pareil langage?
22 And Samuel took Saul and his servant, and brought them into the chamber, and made them sit in the chiefest place among them that were bidden, who were about thirty persons.
Et Samuel prit Saül et son valet et les introduisit dans la salle, et leur donna une première place parmi les conviés qui étaient au nombre de trente hommes.
23 And Samuel said unto the cook: 'Bring the portion which I gave thee, of which I said unto thee: Set it by thee.'
Et Samuel dit au cuisinier: Donne le quartier que je t'ai remis, dont je t'ai dit: Réserve-le.
24 And the cook took up the thigh, and that which was upon it, and set it before Saul. And Samuel said: 'Behold that which hath been reserved! set it before thee and eat; because unto the appointed time hath it been kept for thee, for I said: I have invited the people.' So Saul did eat with Samuel that day.
Alors le cuisinier sortit l'éclanche et ce qui y adhère, et la servit devant Saül. Et il dit: Voici la portion réservée, mets-la devant toi et mange, car c'est dans un but qu'elle a été gardée pour toi, lorsque j'ai convié le peuple. Saül mangea donc avec Samuel ce jour-là.
25 And when they were come down from the high place into the city, he spoke with Saul upon the housetop.
Et du tertre ils descendirent dans la ville, et Samuel s'entretint avec Saül sur la terrasse.
26 And they arose early; and it came to pass about the break of day, that Samuel called to Saul on the housetop, saying: 'Up, that I may send thee away.' And Saul arose, and they went out both of them, he and Samuel, abroad.
Et ils se levèrent, et quand l'aurore surgit, Samuel appela Saül [qui était] sur la terrasse, et il dit: Lève-toi, je veux te reconduire; et Saül se leva et ils sortirent, les deux, lui et Samuel dans la rue.
27 As they were going down at the end of the city, Samuel said to Saul: 'Bid the servant pass on before us — and he passed on — but stand thou still at this time, that I may cause thee to hear the word of God.'
Ils descendirent jusqu'à l'extrémité de la ville; alors Samuel dit à Saül: Dis à ton valet de prendre les devants sur nous! (et il prit les devants) mais toi, demeure à présent pour que je te fasse entendre la parole de Dieu.
