1 Samuel 3

1 And the child Samuel ministered unto the LORD before Eli. And the word of the LORD was precious in those days; there was no frequent vision.

Cependant, le jeune Samuel était employé au service du Seigneur devant Héli le prêtre; en ces jours-là, la parole du Seigneur était rare; il n'y avait plus de visions faisant connaître ses volontés.

2 And it came to pass at that time, when Eli was laid down in his place — now his eyes had begun to wax dim, that he could not see—

Et en ce temps-là, il advint qu'Héli dormait au lieu accoutumé; ses yeux commençaient à s'affaiblir; il n'y voyait plus.

3 and the lamp of God was not yet gone out, and Samuel was laid down to sleep in the temple of the LORD, where the ark of God was,

C'était avant le moment où l'on visitait la lampe de Dieu, et Samuel dormait dans le sanctuaire auprès de l'arche de Dieu.

4 that the LORD called Samuel; and he said: 'Here am I.'

Et le Seigneur appela Samuel, Samuel; et l'enfant dit: Me voici.

5 And he ran unto Eli, and said: 'Here am I; for thou didst call me.' And he said: 'I called not; lie down again.' And he went and lay down.

Et il courut auprès d'Héli, et il lui dit: Me voici, puisque tu m'as appelé. Mais Héli répondit: Je ne t'ai point appelé, retourne-l'en et te rendors. Il s'en retourna donc, et il se rendormit.

6 And the LORD called yet again Samuel. And Samuel arose and went to Eli, and said: 'Here am I; for thou didst call me.' And he answered: 'I called not, my son; lie down again.'

Le Seigneur recommença, il appela: Samuel, Samuel; l'enfant alla une seconde fois auprès d'Héli, et il dit: Me voici, puisque tu m'as appelé. Mais le prêtre lui répondit: Je ne t'ai point appelé, retourne-t'en et te rendors.

7 Now Samuel did not yet know the LORD, neither was the word of the LORD yet revealed unto him.

Or, c'était avant que Samuel connût Dieu, et que la parole du Seigneur lui eût été révélée.

8 And the LORD called Samuel again the third time. And he arose and went to Eli, and said: 'Here am I; for thou didst call me.' And Eli perceived that the LORD was calling the child.

Le Seigneur, continuant, appela Samuel une troisième fois; l'enfant se leva, il alla auprès d'Héli, et il dit: Me voici, puisque tu m'as appelé. Le prêtre comprit alors que le Seigneur avait appelé l'enfant.

9 Therefore Eli said unto Samuel: 'Go, lie down; and it shall be, if thou be called, that thou shalt say: Speak, LORD; for Thy servant heareth.' So Samuel went and lay down in his place.

Il dit donc: Retourne-t'en, et rendors-toi, mon fils, et, si l'on t'appelle encore, tu diras: Parlez, votre serviteur vous écoute. Et Samuel s'en retourna, et il se recoucha au lieu accoutumé.

10 And the LORD came, and stood, and called as at other times: 'Samuel, Samuel.' Then Samuel said: 'Speak; for Thy servant heareth.'

Le Seigneur vint, s'arrêta, et l'appela comme les autres fois, et Samuel dit: Parlez, votre serviteur vous écoute.

11 And the LORD said to Samuel: 'Behold, I will do a thing in Israel, at which both the ears of every one that heareth it shall tingle.

Et le Seigneur dit: Voilà que j'exécute ce que j'ai dit en Israël; quiconque l'ouïra, ses deux oreilles en tinteront.

12 In that day I will perform against Eli all that I have spoken concerning his house, from the beginning even unto the end.

En ce jour-là, je susciterai contre Héli toutes les choses dont j'ai menacé sa famille; je commencerai et j'achèverai.

13 For I have told him that I will judge his house for ever, for the iniquity, in that he knew that his sons did bring a curse upon themselves, and he rebuked them not.

Je lui ai annoncé que je punirais à perpétuité sa famille, à cause des iniquités de ses fils; car ses fils ont outragé Dieu, et il ne les a point réprimandés.

14 And therefore I have sworn unto the house of Eli, that the iniquity of Eli's house shall not be expiated with sacrifice nor offering for ever.'

Non, les choses ne peuvent aller ainsi: j'ai juré à la famille d'Héli que son iniquité ne pouvait être expiée ni par l'encens ni par les sacrifices à perpétuité.

15 And Samuel lay until the morning, and opened the doors of the house of the LORD. And Samuel feared to tell Eli the vision.

Et Samuel resta couché jusqu'au matin; il se leva dès l'aurore, et il ouvrit les portes de la maison du Seigneur. Or, Samuel craignit de raconter sa vision.

16 Then Eli called Samuel, and said: 'Samuel, my son.' And he said: 'Here am I.'

Et Héli dit à Samuel: Samuel, mon enfant. Et il répondit: Me voici.

17 And he said: 'What is the thing that He hath spoken unto thee? I pray thee, hide it not from me, God do so to thee, and more also, if thou hide any thing from me of all the things that He spoke unto thee.'

Puis, le prêtre reprit: Quelle est la parole qui t'a été dite? ne me cache rien; que le Seigneur te punisse, et qu'il te punisse encore, si tu me caches rien de ce qu'ont ouï tes oreilles.

18 And Samuel told him all the words, and hid nothing from him. And he said: 'It is the LORD; let Him do what seemeth Him good.'

Samuel lui répéta donc toutes les paroles du Seigneur, il ne lui cacha rien. Et le prêtre dit: C'est le Seigneur; il fera ce que bon lui semble.

19 And Samuel grew, and the LORD was with him, and did let none of his words fall to the ground.

Et Samuel grandit et prospéra, car le Seigneur était avec lui; et pas une de ses paroles ne fut vaine.

20 And all Israel from Dan even to Beer-sheba knew that Samuel was established to be a prophet of the LORD.

Et depuis Dan jusqu'à Bersabée, tout Israël sut que Samuel était un fidèle prophète du Seigneur.

21 And the LORD appeared again in Shiloh; for the LORD revealed Himself to Samuel in Shiloh by the word of the LORD.

Le Seigneur continua de se montrer en Silo, parce que le Seigneur s'était révélé à Samuel. D'une extrémité à l'autre de la terre promise, tout Israël crut que Samuel était un prophète du Seigneur. Or, Héli était très avancé en âge; et ses fils marchaient dans leur voie, et leur voie était mauvaise devant le Seigneur.
