1 Samuel 14

1 Now it fell upon a day, that Jonathan the son of Saul said unto the young man that bore his armour: 'Come and let us go over to the Philistines' garrison, that is on yonder side. But he told not his father.

Et un jour, Jonathan, fils de Saül, dit à son écuyer: Viens et allons attaquer le poste des Philistins qui est là vis-à-vis! mais il ne mit point son père dans la confidence.

2 And Saul tarried in the uttermost part of Gibeah under the pomegranate-tree which is in Migron; and the people that were with him were about six hundred men,

Or Saül se tenait à l'extrémité de Gibea, sous le grenadier de Migron, et la troupe qu'il avait avec lui, d'environ six cents hommes.

3 and Ahijah, the son of Ahitub, Ichabod's brother, the son of Phinehas, the son of Eli, the priest of the LORD in Shiloh, wearing an ephod. And the people knew not that Jonathan was gone.

Et Ahija, fils d'Ahitub frère de Icabod, fils de Phinées, fils d'Eli, Prêtre de l'Éternel à Silo, portait l'éphod. Et la troupe ignorait le départ de Jonathan.

4 And between the passes, by which Jonathan sought to go over unto the Philistines' garrison, there was a rocky crag on the one side, and a rocky crag on the other side; and the name of the one was Bozez, and the name of the other Seneh.

Et au milieu des passages que Jonathan cherchait à franchir pour atteindre le poste des Philistins, il y avait un pic d'un côté et un pic de l'autre côté; et le nom de l'un est Botsets, et celui de l'autre Séneh.

5 The one crag rose up on the north in front of Michmas, and the other on the south in front of Geba.

L'un de ces pics forme une colonne au nord vis-à-vis de Michmas et l'autre est au midi vis-à-vis de Geba (Gibea).

6 And Jonathan said to the young man that bore his armour: 'Come and let us go over unto the garrison of these uncircumcised; it may be that the LORD will work for us; for there is no restraint to the LORD to save by many or by few.'

Et Jonathan dit à son écuyer: Viens et allons attaquer le poste de ces incirconcis-là: peut-être l'Éternel agira-t-Il pour nous; car pour vaincre, l'Éternel n'est pas arrêté par le nombre, grand ou petit.

7 And his armour-bearer said unto him: 'Do all that is in thy heart; turn thee, behold I am with thee according to thy heart.'

Et son écuyer lui dit: Exécute tout ce que tu as dans le cœur; suis ton mouvement; me voici avec toi partageant ton sentiment.

8 Then said Jonathan: 'Behold, we will pass over unto the men, and we will disclose ourselves unto them.

Et Jonathan dit: Voici! nous marchons contre ces gens et nous allons nous découvrir à eux.

9 If they say thus unto us: Tarry until we come to you; then we will stand still in our place, and will not go up unto them.

S'ils nous disent: Faites halte jusqu'à ce que nous vous joignions! nous resterons en place, et ne marcherons point contre eux;

10 But if they say thus: Come up unto us; then we will go up; for the LORD hath delivered them into our hand; and this shall be the sign unto us.'

mais s'ils disent: Montez à nous! nous monterons, car l'Éternel les livre à nos mains; ce sera le signe que nous aurons.

11 And both of them disclosed themselves unto the garrison of the Philistines; and the Philistines said: 'Behold Hebrews coming forth out of the holes where they hid themselves.'

Puis ils se découvrirent les deux au poste des Philistins, et les Philistins dirent: Voilà que les Hébreux sortent des trous où ils se sont cachés.

12 And the men of the garrison spoke to Jonathan and his armour-bearer, and said: 'Come up to us, and we will show you a thing.' And Jonathan said unto his armour-bearer: 'Come up after me; for the LORD hath delivered them into the hand of Israel.'

Et les hommes du poste crièrent à Jonathan et à son écuyer: Montez à nous! nous avons quelque chose à vous notifier! Alors Jonathan dit à son écuyer: En avant! suis-moi car l'Éternel les livre aux mains d'Israël.

13 And Jonathan climbed up upon his hands and upon his feet, and his armour-bearer after him; and they fell before Jonathan; and his armour-bearer slew them after him.

Et Jonathan se mit à gravir avec les pieds et les mains, et son écuyer le suivait. Les Philistins tombèrent devant Jonathan, et son écuyer tuait après lui.

14 And that first slaughter, which Jonathan and his armour-bearer made, was about twenty men, within as it were half a furrow's length in an acre of land.

Et du premier coup porté par Jonathan et son écuyer ils tuèrent environ vingt hommes sur un espace d'environ un demi sillon d'un arpent de champ.

15 And there was a trembling in the camp in the field, and among all the people; the garrison, and the spoilers, they also trembled; and the earth quaked; so it grew into a terror from God.

Et l'épouvante se mit dans le camp, dans la campagne et dans tout le peuple; le poste et les fourrageurs furent de même pris par la peur; tout le pays était en émoi; c'étaient les terreurs de Dieu.

16 And the watchmen of Saul in Gibeath-benjamin looked; and, behold, the multitude melted away, and they went hither and thither.

Alors les sentinelles de Saül à Gibea de Benjamin regardèrent, et voilà que la multitude s'écoulait et se répandait çà et là.

17 Then said Saul unto the people that were with him: 'Number now, and see who is gone from us.' And when they had numbered, behold, Jonathan and his armour-bearer were not there.

Et Saül dit à la troupe qui était avec lui: Comptez donc et voyez qui a quitté nos rangs. Et ils comptèrent, et voilà que Jonathan et son écuyer n'étaient pas présents.

18 And Saul said unto Ahijah: 'Bring hither the ark of God.' For the ark of God was there at that time with the children of Israel.

Alors Saül dit à Ahija: Fais approcher l'Arche de Dieu! (Car en cette journée l'Arche de Dieu accompagnait les enfants d'Israël).

19 And it came to pass, while Saul talked unto the priest, that the tumult that was in the camp of the Philistines went on and increased; and Saul said unto the priest: 'Withdraw thy hand.'

Et tandis que Saül parlait au Prêtre, le tumulte dans le camp des Philistins allait toujours croissant; alors Saül dit au Prêtre: Ramène ta main.

20 And Saul and all the people that were with him were gathered together, and came to the battle; and, behold, every man's sword was against his fellow, and there was a very great discomfiture.

Et Saül et toute la troupe qui était avec lui, se réunirent et ils s'avancèrent jusqu'à la mêlée, et voici, les Philistins tournaient leurs épées les uns contre les autres; c'était un désordre immense.

21 Now the Hebrews that were with the Philistines as beforetime, and that went up with them into the camp round about; even they also turned to be with the Israelites that were with Saul and Jonathan.

Et les esclaves qui depuis longtemps étaient aux Philistins, et qui étaient venus avec eux au camp, firent volte-face eux aussi pour passer du côté des Israélites qui étaient avec Saül et Jonathan.

22 Likewise all the men of Israel that had hid themselves in the hill-country of Ephraim, when they heard that the Philistines fled, even they also followed hard after them in the battle.

Et tous les Israélites cachés dans les montagnes d'Ephraïm, vinrent aussi, à la nouvelle de la fuite des Philistins se mettre à la poursuite de ceux-ci avec les combattants.

23 So the LORD saved Israel that day; and the battle passed on as far as Beth-aven.

C'est ainsi que dans cette journée l'Éternel délivra Israël, et la charge se prolongea jusqu'au-delà de Beth-Aven.

24 And the men of Israel were distressed that day; but Saul adjured the people, saying: 'Cursed be the man that eateth any food until it be evening, and I be avenged on mine enemies.' So none of the people tasted food.

Et en ce jour-là les hommes d'Israël avaient étaient harassés; et Saül avait assermenté le peuple en disant: Maudit soit l'homme qui mangera jusqu'à la soirée, avant que j'aie tiré vengeance de mes ennemis. Et aucun homme de la troupe ne goûta de la nourriture.

25 And all the people came into the forest; and there was honey upon the ground.

Et tout le monde vint dans la forêt, et il y avait du miel sur la campagne.

26 And when the people were come unto the forest, behold a flow of honey; but no man put his hand to his mouth; for the people feared the oath.

Toute la troupe donc arriva dans la forêt et voilà que le miel suintait; mais personne ne porta sa main à sa bouche car le peuple respectait le serment.

27 But Jonathan heard not when his father charged the people with the oath; and he put forth the end of the rod that was in his hand, and dipped it in the honeycomb, and put his hand to his mouth; and his eyes brightened.

Or Jonathan n'avait pas entendu son père intimer le serment au peuple et il présenta le bout du bâton qu'il avait à la main, et le plongea dans un buisson à miel, et il ramena sa main à sa bouche et sa vue s'éclaircit.

28 Then answered one of the people, and said: 'Thy father straitly charged the people with an oath, saying: Cursed be the man that eateth food this day; and the people are faint.'

Alors un homme de la troupe prit la parole et dit: Ton père a lié le peuple par un serment en disant: Maudit soit l'homme qui prendra de la nourriture aujourd'hui. Et la troupe était harassée.

29 Then said Jonathan: 'My father hath troubled the land; see, I pray you, how mine eyes are brightened, because I tasted a little of this honey.

Et Jonathan dit: Mon père trouble le pays: voyez donc comme j'ai la vue claire pour avoir goûté un peu de ce miel.

30 How much more, if haply the people had eaten freely to-day of the spoil of their enemies which they found? had there not been then a much greater slaughter among the Philistines?'

Eh bien! si seulement la troupe aujourd'hui se fût bien nourrie des prises faites à l'ennemi! Car maintenant la défaite des Philistins n'a pas été si grande.

31 And they smote of the Philistines that day from Michmas to Aijalon; and the people were very faint.

Et en ce jour ils battirent les Philistins de Michmas à Ajalon, et la troupe était très épuisée.

32 And the people flew upon the spoil, and took sheep, and oxen, and calves, and slew them on the ground; and the people did eat them with the blood.

Et le peuple se jeta sur le butin, et ils prirent des brebis et des bœufs et des veaux, et ils les égorgèrent sur le sol et le peuple mangea [de la chair] avec du sang.

33 Then they told Saul, saying: 'Behold, the people sin against the LORD, in that they eat with the blood.' And he said: 'Ye have dealt treacherously; roll a great stone unto me this day.'

Et l'on fit rapport à Saül en ces termes: Voilà que le peuple pèche contre l'Éternel en mangeant [la chair] avec le sang. Et il dit: Vous êtes infidèles! Roulez de suite vers moi une grande pierre.

34 And Saul said: 'Disperse yourselves among the people, and say unto them: Bring me hither every man his ox, and every man his sheep, and slay them here, and eat; and sin not against the LORD in eating with the blood.' And all the people brought every man his ox with him that night, and slew them there.

Et Saul dit: Répandez-vous parmi le peuple et dites-leur: Amenez-moi chacun son bœuf, et chacun sa brebis et l'égorgez ici et mangez, et ne péchez point contre l'Éternel en mangeant [la chair] avec le sang. Et tout le monde amena chacun son bœuf, de nuit, pour l'égorger là.

35 And Saul built an altar unto the LORD; the same was the first altar that he built unto the LORD.

Et Saül éleva là un autel à l'Éternel. Cet autel fut le premier qu'il éleva à l'Éternel.

36 And Saul said: 'Let us go down after the Philistines by night, and spoil them until the morning light, and let us not leave a man of them.' And they said: 'Do whatsoever seemeth good unto thee.' Then said the priest: 'Let us draw near hither unto God.'

Et Saül dit: Faisons une descente nocturne sur les Philistins, et pillons-les jusqu'à l'aube du matin, et ne leur laissons pas un homme. Et ils dirent: Exécute tout ce que tu jugeras bon! Et le Prêtre dit: Approchons-nous ici de Dieu.

37 And Saul asked counsel of God: 'Shall I go down after the Philistines? wilt Thou deliver them into the hand of Israel?' But He answered him not that day.

Et Saül consulta Dieu: Ferai-je une descente sur les Philistins? les livreras-tu aux mains d'Israël? Mais Il ne lui donna point de réponse le jour même.

38 And Saul said: 'Draw nigh hither, all ye chiefs of the people; and know and see wherein this sin hath been this day.

Alors Saül dit: Avancez ici vous tous les chefs du peuple! Examinez et voyez en qui se trouve ce péché aujourd'hui.

39 For, as the LORD liveth, who saveth Israel, though it be in Jonathan my son, he shall surely die.' But there was not a man among all the people that answered him.

Car, par la vie de l'Éternel qui a fait triompher Israël! quand il pèserait sur Jonathan, mon fils, il faut qu'il meure! Et dans tout le peuple personne ne lui répondit.

40 Then said he unto all Israel: 'Be ye on one side, and I and Jonathan my son will be on the other side.' And the people said unto Saul: 'Do what seemeth good unto thee.'

Et il dit à tout Israël: Soyez d'un côté, et moi et Jonathan, mon fils, nous serons de l'autre. Et tout le peuple dit à Saül: Fais ce qui te semblera bon.

41 Therefore Saul said unto the LORD, the God of Israel: 'Declare the right.' And Jonathan and Saul were taken by lot; but the people escaped.

Et Saül dit à l'Éternel: Dieu d'Israël, manifeste la vérité. Alors Saül et Jonathan furent désignés et le peuple laissé en dehors.

42 And Saul said: 'Cast lots between me and Jonathan my son.' And Jonathan was taken.

Et Saül dit: Tirez au sort entre moi et Jonathan, mon fils. Alors Jonathan fut désigné.

43 Then Saul said to Jonathan: 'Tell me what thou hast done.' And Jonathan told him, and said: 'I did certainly taste a little honey with the end of the rod that was in my hand; here am I: I will die.'

Et Saül dit à Jonathan: Confesse-moi ce que tu as fait. Et Jonathan le lui confessa et dit: Avec le bout du bâton que j'avais à la main, j'ai goûté un peu de miel: eh bien! je mourrai!

44 And Saul said: 'God do so and more also; thou shalt surely die, Jonathan.'

Alors Saül dit: Que Dieu m'inflige ceci, et plus encore! il faut que tu meures, Jonathan.

45 And the people said unto Saul: 'Shall Jonathan die, who hath wrought this great salvation in Israel? Far from it; as the LORD liveth, there shall not one hair of his head fall to the ground; for he hath wrought with God this day.' So the people rescued Jonathan, that he died not.

Mais le peuple dit à Saül: Jonathan mourrait, lui qui a exécuté cette grande délivrance en Israël! Non, non, par la vie de l'Éternel, s'il tombe à terre un seul des cheveux de sa tête! car en cette journée, c'est avec Dieu qu'il a agi. Ainsi, le peuple sauva Jonathan, et il ne mourut pas.

46 Then Saul went up from following the Philistines; and the Philistines went to their own place.

Et Saül revint de la poursuite des Philistins, et il regagnèrent leur pays.

47 So Saul took the kingdom over Israel, and fought against all his enemies on every side, against Moab, and against the children of Ammon, and against Edom, and against the kings of Zobah, and against the Philistines; and whithersoever he turned himself, he put them to the worse.

Or Saül, ayant reçu la royauté sur Israël, porta la guerre de toutes parts contre tous ses ennemis. Contre Moab et contre les Ammonites et contre Edom et contre les rois de Tsoba et contre les Philistins; et quoi qu'il entreprit, il était victorieux.

48 And he did valiantly, and smote the Amalekites, and delivered Israel out of the hands of them that spoiled them.

Et il montra de la bravoure, et il battit Amalek et sauva Israël des mains de ses spoliateurs.

49 Now the sons of Saul were Jonathan, and Ishvi, and Malchi-shua; and the names of his two daughters were these: the name of the first-born Merab, and the name of the younger Michal;

Et les fils de Saül étaient: Jonathan et Jisvi et Malkisua. Et ses deux filles se nommaient, l'aînée Merab et la cadette, Michal.

50 and the name of Saul's wife was Ahinoam the daughter of Ahimaaz; and the name of the captain of his host was Abner, the son of Ner, Saul's uncle.

Et le nom de la femme de Saül était Ahinoam, fille d'Ahimaats. Et le nom de son chef d'armée était Abner, fils de Ner, oncle de Saül.

51 And Kish was the father of Saul, and Ner the father of Abner was the son of Abiel.

Car Kis, père de Saül, et Ner, père d'Abner, étaient fils d'Abiel.

52 And there was sore war against the Philistines all the days of Saul; and when Saul saw any mighty man, or any valiant man, he took him unto him.

Et la guerre fut véhémente contre les Philistins, durant toute la vie de Saül; et Saül apercevait-il quelque homme capable et quelque brave, il se l'attachait.
