1 Kings 13
1 And, behold, there came a man of God out of Judah by the word of the LORD unto Beth-el; and Jeroboam was standing by the altar to offer.
Mais voici qu’un homme de Dieu vint de Juda à Béthel par ordre du Seigneur, tandis que Jéroboam, debout près de l’autel, faisait fumer l’encens;
2 And he cried against the altar by the word of the LORD, and said: 'O altar, altar, thus saith the LORD: Behold, a son shall be born unto the house of David, Josiah by name; and upon thee shall he sacrifice the priests of the high places that offer upon thee, and men's bones shall they burn upon thee.'
et il cria à l’autel, selon l’ordre de Dieu, cette parole: "Autel! Autel! Ainsi parle le Seigneur: Un fils va naître à la famille de David Josias sera son nom qui égorgera sur toi les prêtres des hauts-lieux, lesquels font fumer sur toi l’encens, et ce sont des ossements humains qu’on brûlera sur toi."
3 And he gave a sign the same day saying: 'This is the sign which the LORD hath spoken: Behold, the altar shall be rent, and the ashes that are upon it shall be poured out.'
Et le jour même, il donna une preuve de sa mission en disant: "Voici la preuve que c’est l’Eternel qui a parlé: l’autel va se fendre, et la cendre qui est dessus se répandra à terre."
4 And it came to pass, when the king heard the saying of the man of God, which he cried against the altar in Beth-el, that Jeroboam put forth his hand from the altar, saying: 'Lay hold on him.' And his hand, which he put forth against him, dried up, so that he could not draw it back to him.
En entendant l’apostrophe que l’homme de Dieu avait adressée à l’autel de Béthel, le roi Jéroboam étendit la main de dessus l’autel et dit: "Arrêtez-le!" Mais sa main tendue se paralysa et il ne put la ramener à lui.
5 The altar also was rent, and the ashes poured out from the altar, according to the sign which the man of God had given by the word of the LORD.
L’Autel se fendit et la cendre s’en répandit à terre, selon la preuve annoncée par l’homme de Dieu sur l’ordre du Seigneur.
6 And the king answered and said unto the man of God: 'Entreat now the favour of the LORD thy God, and pray for me, that my hand may be restored me.' And the man of God entreated the LORD, and the king's hand was restored him, and became as it was before.
Sur quoi, s’adressant à l’homme de Dieu, le roi dit: "De grâce, veuille implorer l’Eternel, ton Dieu, et le prier pour moi, que je puisse ramener ma main." L’Homme de Dieu implora l’Eternel, le roi put ramener sa main et en recouvra l’usage.
7 And the king said unto the man of God: 'Come home with me, and refresh thyself, and I will give thee a reward.'
Le roi dit à l’homme de Dieu: "Viens avec moi dans ma demeure et restaure-toi; je voudrais ensuite te faire un présent."
8 And the man of God said unto the king: 'If thou wilt give me half thy house, I will not go in with thee, neither will I eat bread nor drink water in this place.
L’Homme de Dieu répondit au roi: "Quand tu me donnerais la moitié de ta maison, je n’irais point avec toi; je ne mangerai ni ne boirai ici.
9 For it so was charged me by the word of the LORD, saying: Thou shalt eat no bread, nor drink water, neither return by the way that thou camest.'
Car ainsi me l’a ordonné la parole du Seigneur, disant: Tu ne mangeras pas de pain, tu ne boiras pas d’eau, et tu ne reviendras pas par le même chemin que tu auras pris pour aller."
10 So he went another way, and returned not by the way that he came to Beth-el.
Il s’en retourna donc par un autre chemin, et ne reprit pas celui qui l’avait conduit à Béthel.
11 Now there dwelt an old prophet in Beth-el; and one of his sons came and told him all the works that the man of God had done that day in Beth-el, and the words which he had spoken unto the king, and they told them unto their father.
Or, un autre prophète, âgé, demeurait à Béthel. Un de ses fils vint lui raconter tout ce que l’homme de Dieu avait fait ce jour-là à Béthel et les paroles qu’il avait dites au roi, et ils les redirent à leur père.
12 And their father said unto them: 'What way went he?' For his sons had seen what way the man of God went, that came from Judah.
Celui-ci leur demanda par quel chemin il était parti (ses fils avaient vu par quel chemin était parti l’homme de Dieu venu de Juda).
13 And he said unto his sons: 'Saddle me the ass.' So they saddled him the ass; and he rode thereon.
Et il dit à ses fils: "Sanglez-moi l’âne." Ils lui sanglèrent l’âne et il le monta.
14 And he went after the man of God, and found him sitting under a terebinth; and he said unto him: 'Art thou the man of God that camest from Judah?' And he said: 'I am.'
Il alla dans la direction de l’homme de Dieu, le trouva assis au pied d’un térébinthe et lui dit: "Es-tu l’homme de Dieu qui est venu de Juda? C’Est moi," répondit-il.
15 Then he said unto him: 'Come home with me, and eat bread.'
Il reprit: "Viens avec moi dans ma maison et prends de la nourriture."
16 And he said: 'I may not return with thee, nor go in with thee; neither will I eat bread nor drink water with thee in this place.
Il répondit: "Je ne puis revenir sur mes pas et aller avec toi, je ne mangerai ni ne boirai rien chez toi en ce lieu;
17 For it was said to me by the word of the LORD: Thou shalt eat no bread nor drink water there, nor turn back to go by the way that thou camest.'
car cet ordre m’est venu de la part de l’Eternel: Tu ne dois rien manger ni boire là, ni reprendre le chemin par où tu es venu.
18 And he said unto him: 'I also am a prophet as thou art; and an angel spoke unto me by the word of the LORD, saying: Bring him back with thee into thy house, that he may eat bread and drink water.' — He lied unto him. —
Moi aussi, répliqua l’autre, je suis prophète comme toi; or, un ange m’a dit par ordre de l’Eternel: Ramène-le dans ta maison, qu’il y mange et y boive." (Il lui mentait.)
19 So he went back with him, and did eat bread in his house, and drank water.
L’Homme retourna avec lui, mangea et but dans sa maison.
20 And it came to pass, as they sat at the table, that the word of the LORD came unto the prophet that brought him back.
Tandis qu’ils étaient attablés, une voix divine s’adressa au prophète qui l’avait fait revenir,
21 And he cried unto the man of God that came from Judah, saying: 'Thus saith the LORD: Forasmuch as thou hast rebelled against the word of the LORD, and hast not kept the commandment which the LORD thy God commanded thee,
et interpellant l’homme de Dieu venant de Juda, elle lui dit: "Ainsi a parlé le Seigneur: Parce que tu as désobéi au Seigneur, que tu n’as pas respecté l’ordre que t’avait donné l’Eternel, ton Dieu;
22 but camest back, and hast eaten bread and drunk water in the place of which He said to thee: Eat no bread, and drink no water; thy carcass shall not come unto the sepulchre of thy fathers.'
parce que tu as rebroussé chemin, que tu as mangé et bu dans le lieu où il t’avait défendu de manger et de boire, ta dépouille n’entrera point au sépulcre de tes pères."
23 And it came to pass, after he had eaten bread, and after he had drunk, that he saddled for him the ass, namely, for the prophet whom he had brought back.
Après qu’il eut mangé et bu, on sangla pour lui l’âne appartenant au prophète qui l’avait ramené.
24 And when he was gone, a lion met him by the way, and slew him; and his carcass was cast in the way, and the ass stood by it; the lion also stood by the carcass.
Il partit et rencontra sur son chemin un lion qui le fit périr. Son corps était étendu sur la route, l’âne restant à ses côtés et le lion aussi près du cadavre.
25 And, behold, men passed by, and saw the carcass cast in the way, and the lion standing by the carcass; and they came and told it in the city where the old prophet dwelt.
Des passants aperçurent ce cadavre abandonné sur la route et le lion qui se tenait auprès; ils allèrent le raconter dans la ville où demeurait le vieux prophète.
26 And when the prophet that brought him back from the way heard thereof, he said: 'It is the man of God, who rebelled against the word of the LORD; therefore the LORD hath delivered him unto the lion, which hath torn him, and slain him, according to the word of the LORD, which He spoke unto him.'
Le prophète qui l’avait fait revenir dit en les entendant: "C’Est le corps de l’homme de Dieu, qui a désobéi à l’ordre du Seigneur; le Seigneur l’a livré au lion, qui l’a mis en pièces et l’a fait périr ainsi que le Seigneur le lui avait prédit."
27 And he spoke to his sons, saying: 'Saddle me the ass.' And they saddled it.
Et il dit à ses fils: "Sanglez-moi l’âne"; ce qu’ils firent.
28 And he went and found his carcass cast in the way, and the ass and the lion standing by the carcass; the lion had not eaten the carcass, nor torn the ass.
Il partit et trouva le corps étendu sur la route, le lion et l’âne à ses côtés; le lion n’avait point dévoré le cadavre ni mis l’âne en pièces.
29 And the prophet took up the carcass of the man of God, and laid it upon the ass, and brought it back; and he came to the city of the old prophet, to lament, and to bury him.
Le prophète enleva le corps de l’homme de Dieu, le posa sur l’âne et le ramena. Le vieux prophète entra ainsi dans la ville pour procéder à la cérémonie de deuil et à l’inhumation.
30 And he laid his carcass in his own grave; and they made lamentation for him: 'Alas, my brother!'
Il déposa le corps dans son propre sépulcre, et on récita sur lui la complainte Hoï ahi.
31 And it came to pass, after he had buried him, that he spoke to his sons, saying: 'When I am dead, then bury me in the sepulchre wherein the man of God is buried; lay my bones beside his bones.
Après qu’on l’eut enterré, il dit à ses fils: "Quand je serai mort, ensevelissez-moi dans la tombe où repose l’homme de Dieu, et placez mes ossements auprès des siens;
32 For the saying which he cried by the word of the LORD against the altar in Beth-el, and against all the houses of the high places which are in the cities of Samaria, shall surely come to pass.'
car, certes, elle se réalisera la parole qu’il a prononcée, par l’ordre du Seigneur, sur l’autel qui est à Béthel et sur tous les temples des hauts-lieux qui sont dans les villes de Samarie…"
33 After this thing Jeroboam returned not from his evil way, but made again from among all the people priests of the high places; whosoever would, he consecrated him, that he might be one of the priests of the high places.
En dépit de ces faits, Jéroboam ne renonça pas à sa mauvaise conduite: il prit de nouveau, dans les rangs du peuple, des prêtres pour les hauts-lieux; qui le voulait se faisait consacrer, et l’on devenait ainsi prêtre des hauts-lieux.
34 And by this thing there was sin unto the house of Jeroboam, even to cut it off, and to destroy it from off the face of the earth.
Cette manière d’agir entraîna la condamnation de la maison de Jéroboam, la fit proscrire et anéantir de dessus la face de la terre.
