< Matthew 8 >

1 NOW when he descended from the mount, great multitudes followed him.
So when He came down from the mountain large crowds followed Him.
2 And lo! a leper came and worshipped him, saying, Lord, if thou wilt, thou canst make me clean.
And then, a leper came and worshiped Him saying, “Lord, if You are willing, You can make me clean.”
3 And stretching out his hand, Jesus touched him, saying, I will; be thou clean. And instantly the leprosy was cleansed.
So reaching out His hand Jesus touched him, saying, “I am willing; be cleansed!” And immediately his leprosy was cleansed.
4 And Jesus said to him, See thou tell no man; but go, shew thyself to the priest, and offer the gift which Moses commanded for a testimony unto them.
And Jesus says to him: “See that you tell no one; but go, show yourself to the priest and offer the gift that Moses commanded, as a proof to them.”
5 Then as Jesus was entering into Capernaum, there met him a centurion, intreating him,
As He entered Capernaum a centurion came to Him, pleading with Him
6 and saying, My servant is lying in the house paralytic, terribly tormented with pain.
and saying, “Lord, my servant is lying at home paralyzed, being terribly tormented.”
7 And Jesus said unto him, I will come and heal him.
And Jesus says to him, “I will go and heal him.”
8 And the centurion said, I am not a fit person, that thou shouldest come under my roof: but only speak a word, and my servant be cured.
But in answer the centurion said: “Lord, I am not worthy that you should come under my roof; but only speak a word and my servant will be healed.
9 For I also am a man under authority, having under my command soldiers and I say to this soldier, Go, and he goeth; and to another, Come, and he cometh; and to my servant, Do this, and he doeth it.
For I also am a man under authority, having soldiers under me. And I say to this one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and to another, ‘Come,’ and he comes; and to my slave, ‘Do this,’ and he does.”
10 And Jesus hearing him, marvelled, and said to those who were following, Verily I say unto you, not even in Israel have I found so great faith.
Upon hearing him Jesus marveled, and said to those who were following: “Assuredly I say to you, not even in Israel have I found such great faith!
11 And I say unto you, That many shall come from the east and from the west, and shall sit down with Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, in the kingdom of heaven.
And I say to you that many will come from east and west and sit down with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of the heavens;
12 But the children of the kingdom shall be cast into the outer darkness: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth.
but the sons of the kingdom will be thrown out into the darkness farthest away. There, there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.”
13 And Jesus said to the centurion, Go; and as thou hast believed, be it to thee. And his servant was cured at that very hour.
Then Jesus said to the centurion, “Go; and let it be done for you just as you believed.” And his servant was healed in that very hour.
14 And when Jesus was come into the house of Peter, he saw his mother-in-law laid on a bed, and in a fever.
Now when Jesus had come into Peter's house, He saw his mother-in-law laid up and burning with fever.
15 And he touched her hand, and the fever left her: and she arose, and waited upon them.
So He touched her hand and the fever left her; and she got up and began to serve Him.
16 And when evening was come, they brought him many possessed by devils: and he cast out the spirits by a word, and all who had illnesses he cured:
And when evening came they brought to Him many who were demonized. And He cast out the spirits with a word, and healed all who were sick,
17 that it might be fulfilled what was spoken by the prophet, “Himself he took our infirmities, and bore our diseases.”
so that what was spoken through Isaiah the prophet should be fulfilled, namely: “He Himself took our infirmities and bore our diseases.”
18 Now when Jesus saw great multitudes about him, he gave orders to pass to the other side.
Seeing large crowds around Him Jesus gave an order to depart for the opposite shore.
19 And a certain scribe came, and said unto him, Master, I will follow thee whithersoever thou goest.
Then a certain scribe approaching said to Him, “Teacher, I will follow you wherever you may go.”
20 And Jesus said unto him, The foxes have holes, and the birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man hath not where he can lay his head.
So Jesus says to him, “The foxes have dens and the birds of the air have nests, but the Son of the Man does not have where He may lay His head.”
21 And another of his disciples said unto him, Permit me first to go and bury my father.
Then a different one of the disciples said to Him, “Lord, permit me first to go and bury my father.”
22 And Jesus said unto him, Follow me; and let the dead bury their own dead.
But Jesus said to him, “Follow me, and leave the dead to bury their own dead.”
23 And going on board a vessel, his disciples followed him.
Now when He got into the boat, His disciples followed Him.
24 And, behold, there was a great tempest in the sea, so that the vessel was hid by the waves; but he was asleep.
And then—a great tempest arose on the sea, so that the boat was covered by the waves. But He was sleeping.
25 And his disciples coming, awoke him, saying, Lord, save us: we are perishing!
So the disciples came and awakened Him saying, “Lord, save us! We are perishing!”
26 And he said unto them, Why are ye fearful, O ye of little faith? Then arising, he issued his mandate to the winds, and to the sea; and there was a great calm.
And He says to them, “Why are you cowardly, you little-faiths?” Then rising He rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm.
27 And the men marvelled, saying, What a wondrous man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey him!
So the men marveled, saying, “What sort of being is this, that even the winds and the sea obey Him?”
28 And when he came to the other side, into the region of the Girgasenes, there met him two demoniacs, coming from the sepulchres; exceeding fierce, so that no person was able to pass by that road.
Upon His coming to the other side, to the region of the Gergesenes, two demonized men met Him, coming out from the tombs, very dangerous, so that no one could pass that way.
29 And lo! they cried out, saying, What have we to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of God? art thou come hither before the time to torment us?
And then—they cried out saying: “What do you have to do with us, Jesus, Son of God? Have you come here to torment us before the time?”
30 And at a considerable distance, there was a great herd of swine feeding.
Now a good way off from them there was a herd of many pigs feeding.
31 Then the devils besought him, saying, If thou cast us out, permit us to go into the herd of swine.
So the demons kept imploring Him saying, “Since you are going to cast us out, permit us to go into the herd of pigs.”
32 And he said to them, Go. Then they going forth out of him, entered into the herd of swine: and lo! the whole herd of the swine rushed down a precipice into the sea, and perished in the waters.
So He said to them, “Go!” And coming out they went off into the herd of pigs. And then—the whole herd of pigs rushed down the steep bank into the sea and died in the water!
33 But they who fed them fled, and going away into the city, reported all things, and what had happened to the demoniacs.
So the swineherds ran away, and going into the town they told everything, including about the demonized men.
34 And, behold, all the city came out to meet him: and when they saw him, they besought him to depart from their territories.
And then, the whole town went out to meet with Jesus; and upon seeing Him they begged Him to depart from their borders.
